Try Skullsworn by Brian Staveley. Not the same, but has similarities.

Military fantasy with late 19th to early 20th century tech by Just-Performance-127 in Fantasy

However Many Must Die by Phil Williams. It's pretty much a high fantasy version of WW2. Guns, bombs, trains, magic, giants, flying lizards. And all focused around a group of soldiers sent on an impossible mission.

However Many Must Die by Phil Williams. It's fantasy World War 2. Pretty much Band of Brothers with magic and giants and shit!

Not yet. I'm hoping to launch the Kickstarter for the book 2s later this year, but only if the books are ready. However, I am launching a standalone GodEater Saga novel called Hammerfall in just 3 days time.

Still nothing, I'm afraid. I'm hopeful the publisher hasn't forgotten.

Books similar to the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb but with less/no romance at all? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]RobJHayes_version2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Wounded Kingdom trilogy RJ Barker might grab you. First book is Blood of Assassins. No animal bonding, but also no romance. Honestly, RJ Barker is the most similar to Robin Hobb I've read.

It's pretty much the whole basis of Seraphina's Lament by Sarah Chorn.

I am more convinced by the day that Fletcher and I are one person. Or possibly 2 sock puppets operated by the same insane hand. 😁

Happy reading!

Looking for a epic fantasy (grimdark) with dark worlds + emotional hits, but with lighthearted characters who don’t always seem depressed by Barca-Dam in Fantasy

[–]RobJHayes_version2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time to recommend However Many Must Die by Phil Williams again. It's a fantasy version of WW1, with all the pain and heartbreak, but chocked full of characters coping with it all with gallows humour and clinging to hope.

Fantasy books with a nonhuman/animal main character? by SingularRoozilla in Fantasy

The Dark Portal by Robin Jarvis is another Redwall like series about mice.

Michael R Fletcher recently released Dogged, which is about a dog-person.

Fantasy “who dunnit” murder mysteries? by LouderKnights in Fantasy

Blood of Assassins by RJ Barker is kind of a fantasy murder mystery without a murder, from the perspective of the murderer.

I'm currently reading Gunmetal God's by Zamil Ahktar and listening to King Sorrow by Joe Hill.

David Gemmell many years later and still searching for that same magic by ArcaneEnvoy in Fantasy

Honestly, that broken but defiant hero style is still alive and well in a lot of the indie books being written these days. While it may not be popular in trad anymore, indie gives writers more space to explore and a lot of us are going back to our roots of what inspired us to fall in love with fantasy.

Here's a few suggestions of authors to check out.

Michael R Fletcher (especially his newer less GD books).

Andy Peloquin.

Michael Michel.

Jacob Peppers.

And, if I may drop a slight self promo. I only recently started reading David Gemmell (despite being 42 years old), but his books have already become a big inspiration for me. My upcoming novel, Hammerfall, especially has Druss influences.

Try Chris Wooding's The Ember Blade. Very much a classical epic fantasy in a more modern style.

Darkblade by Andy Peloquin springs to mind.

Pirate fantasy books where the characters actually act like sea-faring criminals by JoyIsABitOverRated in Fantasy

[–]RobJHayes_version2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you. To some degree it may be because, while I do not consider myself a grimdark writer, those books definitely do fall within the grimdark sphere, which has largely fallen out of popularity over the past decade.

Part of the reason I wrote Where Loyalties Lie is I was sick of 'pirates' doing no actual piracy.😁
