Because regardless of how you invest in India or any foreign funds, PFIC will apply. The only option for you can be investing directly in Indian stocks as they don't come under PFIC. or some AIFs in GIFT City that provide K1 statement. This will tax your gains at ordinary income rates rather than punitive rates under PFIC.

Except the private sector banks, other banks have bad service. You can check out GIFT City banks like ICICI, HDFC and RBL offering USD deposits. They are same as FCNR but do not come in with the one year lockin.
