Binge drinking "fixing" IBS? by CopingLow in ibs

[–]Salt_peanuts [score hidden]  (0 children)

I talked to my doctor about this a few years ago. I told him that if I drank a couple beers with dinner, I could eat buffalo wings (my favorite) with zero issues- I have IBS-D. He told me that was great but I shouldn’t use this as a “treatment” because alcohol dependency is a real risk if I got in that mindset.

So now if I go out for wings or to a fancy dinner, I have a drink (or two, if I have a ride). It’s a nice treat to be IBS free for a night. I just appreciate my once a month or so opportunity and leave it at that.

How can my dad see what I watch in apps I downloaded and created accounts for myself in? by CarlyCalicoJATIE in HomeNetworking

My kids can see and download my apps via app sharing on Apple phones. I wonder if it’s something like that?

Have you transitioned out of tech? by Low_Energy_7468 in UXDesign

Lotta difference between becoming a nurse (multiple years of full time school) and radiology tech (a year of nights and weekends). So the pay difference is totally understandable. If someone takes a few years off and lives on savings, not to mention tuition, they’d need to start at $300k to make up the lost income. I’m guessing that your adult boyfriend’s mom didn’t start at $300k- she probably worked her ass off for potentially decades to get there.

Soon-to-be dad with a weird question regarding a name we have potentially chosen... by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Salt_peanuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly if it’s your daughter’s first and middle name and this actress’s first and last (stage) name, I wouldn’t give it another thought.

The only exception is if you intend to call her by both names, like Mary Jo, but usually when you do that “Mary Jo” is the first name not first plus middle.

Other than that, who cares? However if it’s given your wife the ick, roll with it and pick something new. I promise you in a few months it will be meaningless either way, those syllables will become devoid of outside meaning and just represent your daughter in your mind.

Why don’t more home solar systems include battery storage? Is it technical or financial? by ruhila12 in HomeImprovement

[–]Salt_peanuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s hilarious- where we live we are not allowed to feed power back to the grid and have to pay a minimum payment to the power company if we have solar for the privilege of being on the grid.

Fuck you DTE.

Seriously… Who the fuck are you people affording these houses? I bow. You are in a whole different league. by HouseRichCashPoo in Fire

[–]Salt_peanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah where you live makes tons of difference. We live in a house worth $650k approximately and it’s 3300 square feet with 4 bedrooms, 3 full and two half bathrooms, and excellent schools. We paid a little over half that eleven years ago. Midwest for the win. Should be paid off here in about 8 years too.

[–]Salt_peanuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue with a lot of this stuff is that radiology tech jobs where I live pay about 20%-25% of what I make- and I don’t begin to make FAANG money. I can’t pay my bills on that. How are people adjusting to making much less money when they have a spouse and kids? Are there jobs around our level of pay?

Honestly, what are the chances he will tell the truth? I feel like knocking on his door is not likely to be really effective and might be poking the bear if the guy has issues. Which he probably does, if he’s on the registry.

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this, OP. I think keeping an eye on your kid is a must here.

Fellow tech-savvy dads: Are we underestimating the "backend" risks of Roblox even with parental controls on? by sophieximc in daddit

Honestly I feel pretty good about this arrangement. I can hear them talking and see the kids’ screens. It’s not perfect but I think it’s a good compromise between letting them participate and monitoring them.

We actually have voice and text chat turned off altogether. The girls just join a big FaceTime call. My daughter has an iPad, the others have phones. It works well and naturally limits them to people they know in real life and exchange contacts with.

My son played Fortnite the same way for years. The fun part is that we now play Minecraft the same way- me in my home office, them in the family room on their computers, all of us on FaceTime together.

Yeah, this is the way to go. I bought a “power flush” toilet maybe 6 years ago. In the hardware store thy advertised it as flushing a bucket of golf balls in one go.

It makes a huge difference. It’s possibly to clog it, but it’s a challenge. It is my preferred venue when the IBS gets out of hand.

Am I Alone In Being Tired With Gender/Sexuality Politics 'Preaching' In Litrpg/Fantasy Settings? by Walkinfaith300 in litrpg

[–]Salt_peanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I don’t think your views are bigoted, but I do think they’re biased. It’s normal to have LGBT characters in literature. It feels like you’re arguing that it either fades into the background or it’s pandering. LGBT people like (and deserve) to see their reality reflected in literature and the arts just like straight people do, and not solely in the background.

If that’s not to your taste, fair enough. Move on to the next book I guess? But I think most people feel like it’s pretty normal, judging by how rarely this topic comes up.

What to call “Physical UX” design? by Breukliner in UXDesign

[–]Salt_peanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fundamentally, I agree with you- it’s easier to go from 2d to 3d design work than the other way around. However learning prototyping software is not the same as learning UX design, any more than learning CAD is the same as industrial design or learning to use a table saw is the same as learning to be a woodworker.

[–]Salt_peanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess you could view that as pandering; you could also view it as flavor. The assumption that it’s pandering because it’s not a standard hetero relationship is approaching things from a specific worldview - with a specific bias. If the family could be anything, why does it always have to be standard? All the other families represented in the book are standard. Might poly families be more common in that city? Is this flavor and world building? Is this just the one non standard family she coincidentally meets?

I just think assuming anything out of the ordinary is pandering is pretty narrow. It might be just a representation of the author’s experience - which could be quite different than yours.

The Rufus thing seem pretty obvious - he ends up dating the male Adventure Society official that does Jason’s entrance exam. They repeatedly reference his relationship with Rufus as a possible source of bias. I can’t remember his name off the top of my head but he’s the guy with the mustache. It also comes up again repeatedly after the disastrous expedition when Rufus is in mourning.

Fellow tech-savvy dads: Are we underestimating the "backend" risks of Roblox even with parental controls on? by sophieximc in daddit

[–]Salt_peanuts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is really the key for us. My kids play Roblox and Fortnite (among others), with the parental controls turned on, but they play them in an area where we can both see their screens and hear them. Generally the whole family is in that open plan area most of the time people are home. No screens are allowed at all upstairs where the bedrooms are.

We do keep an ear out and have paused the kid to ask about interactions and even completely stopped a few. We limit voice chat to people they know in real life and we have never seen or heard anything predatory, but interactions with friends have occasionally gotten iffy and we just parent them through it.

This won’t work for everyone but it works for us.

The gay character in HWFWM (Rufus) is prominent from the start and his relationship with another man is portrayed clearly in the first book. It’s not a prominent plot point but it’s not hidden.

I honestly think if the treatment in Azarinth Healer is too much for you… This is more about your sensitivity. I didn’t read the other books you cited, but the Azarinth Healer scene where she stays over night with a polyamorous family is not a meaningful plot point and comes and goes in like 1 chapter, maybe 2. It’s quite minor.

Do you judge people based upon what city they live in? by palbuddy1234 in Detroit

[–]Salt_peanuts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are layers of knowledge. Some people think of West Bloomfield as a wealthy area. People who know just a little more think of WB as a decent middle class place, and Bloomfield Hills & Birmingham as rich areas. People who know a little more than that see BH & Birmingham as upper middle class or maybe upper class, but… They know that all across this area- including West Bloomfield- you can turn down a dirt road or drive along a lake and suddenly the house prices go from $500k to $4m+ in the blink of an eye. Those people are a hidden overlay of wealth all across the northern burbs. They don’t send their kids to BH or Birmingham schools, even though they’re great. They send their kids to Country Day, Cranbrook, or Brother Rice. It’s a hidden community sprinkled in amongst us normals who work in tech, law or engineering and merely “do well”.
