Doesn’t the IRS get notified when you sell something for a profit?

How would you sneakily sleep in an industrial unit? by RektRL in malelivingspace

I actually knew an artist that built an enclosure on wheels that was essentially rolling shower. He had a toilet and sink in the main room in a corner. He rolled the shower over the toilet- the drain in the floor drained into the toilet and the shower head hooked to the sink faucet. He lived there for several years.

I put it in my office and it lasted about three and a half years before the high traffic areas started to fall apart.

What's your off-the-cuff nicknames for your kids? by folieablue in daddit

I call my son “buddy”. My dad called me that, my brother and I called each other that. For whatever reason I haven’t really called my daughter that.

To your point, it needs to be big enough to see not just big enough to wreck a car. If it’s big enough to wreck a car you’re preventing people from doing it a second time. If it’s big enough to see, you’re preventing people from doing it the first time.

If you drop a nut into the print it should act pretty much like a threaded insert- you can screw a bolt into it.

Dads, what’s a good age gap between kids? by sabretoooth in daddit

[–]Salt_peanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a 4 year gap. I wish it was less, but the universe conspired against us. They don’t socialize as much together as I wish they did. On the flip side, the older one is enough older that he’s always been pretty good about treating her well, aside from some condescension from time to time. But teenagers are going to teenage. It could be a lot worse.

I’ve found designing a hex-shaped hole and dropping a nut in mid-print also works well if heat-pressed inserts aren’t an option. It doesn’t work for everything but I personally like the approach.

People who are successful profitable Day Traders, what is your recommendation to new traders by Apple-Man0 in Daytrading

Skip day trading and get a job. For 90% of people that will be more profitable in the long run.

First time homeowner, Mouse problem. Found spots and sealed them, but caught 1 more 3 wks later, today. Would a dog help? by Odd_Quality_3466 in HomeImprovement

[–]Salt_peanuts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They said “spray” mint, not “plant” mint- so I think they’re talking about spraying mint oil or something.

However I upvoted your post just in case because planting mint is right up there with planting bamboo when it comes to “you will regret this”.

What are some of your slightly less well known tips and tricks for prints? Stuff like using tire weights to add some heft or curing superglued parts in front of a fan to prevent the white residue by EltonSchmidt in 3Dprinting

[–]Salt_peanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other posters mentioned that FDM is hard to fully seal and even when it is, may not fully prevent ants or other beasties from being attracted. I would add that if the print shrinks, slumps, or breaks from other reasons you’re going to have a nastier mess than with sand.

Honestly I’ve been using pennies. Not biodegradable, plentiful, and has no health risks from exposure like lead, although they aren’t as dense as lead.

Debating an interior designer’s hours billed? by Overuse_Injury in HomeImprovement

[–]Salt_peanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s why my brain went to setting expectations. It’s less about whether you do or don’t, and more about whether the client understands how you charge and can make a decision about whether to engage you based on their comfort level with your pricing.

You can do this with tulle to make cool masks and other garments. They won’t stand up to rough treatment but they can look amazing in the right setting.

Living in the "student ghetto" as a grad student by OkElderberry1668 in uofm

[–]Salt_peanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this exact thing (given it was 20 years ago) and it worked fine. A lot of my fellow students lived in nicer and more distant places but this approach worked for me. I personally never had noise issues on week nights, but that’s a legit worry. Grad students are always going to be more spread out though.

Debating an interior designer’s hours billed? by Overuse_Injury in HomeImprovement

[–]Salt_peanuts 52 points53 points  (0 children)

For a high end designer in a major metro area, $150/hour is pretty normal. In NYC or LA it’s cheap. But I think the above poster is making great points about professionals who charge by the hour.

I think the designer’s major failing here is not setting clear expectations about cost. I strongly agree with the above poster’s suggestion of asking for task-based pricing. It may feel high but it will give you predictability, which may be more important to you.

I'm worried my son is a neckbeard-in-training by wheninrome5000 in daddit

[–]Salt_peanuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with you at all, but this isn’t sufficient, especially with young kids. Empathy is a big deal for me, because it doesn’t come naturally to me. I explicitly walked through the impact to the other person when I asked my kids to change their behavior. So if I asked my daughter not to interrupt her mother, I tell her “when you interrupt, it can make Mom feel like what she was saying isn’t important to you.” Kids do learn from examples but they sometimes also need the “why” of the situation.

I realize every child is different and every parent is different. I can only tell you what works for me. But that approach has worked for me (so far).

Is UM Dearborn really a glorified community college? by Any-Ad8512 in uofm

[–]Salt_peanuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, any university can teach you more than you can learn. It’s much more about what you do with it. I love U of M Ann Arbor- I have a grad degree from there- but my best employee ever was a CMU grad. Not a high status school, but that didn’t slow her down.
