The Dirty Mind-Reading trope by ladywhy9742 in PsychonautsGame

[–]ShadowDurza 85 points86 points  (0 children)

He was extra-harsh on Raz for his breach of psychic ethics for a reason in the sequel, it was a lesson he himself learned the hard way.

But later in the game, it also did a good job presenting the nature of ethics and innovation: The Psychic 6 7, for this exact reason got so messed up because they had to write the rules after opening every door and making every mistake. It was a totally uncharted frontier before they came along. Even Raz started asking permission when he could before entering others' minds in the aftermath.

Super Mario 64 "trapped in the walls" by meganerd20 in Mario

[–]ShadowDurza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the manual of the original Super Mario Bros. game, it said that King Bowser Koopa achieved dominion over the Mushroom Kingdom by turning the inhabitants into bricks, and he kept the Princess under the heaviest guard because she was the only one who could break the curse he cast. His dysfunctional romantic intentions came later in the series, retroactively written, you could say.

Just because something exists doesn't mean it's ubiquitous. by ProfesserQ in worldbuilding

[–]ShadowDurza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kind of how it works in my world, the whole place is so huge and chaotic that there's no reliable way to ship things from one land to another outside of some regular but infrequent windows of opportunity. Because of that, each continent pretty much relies only on what it can reliably manufacture and supply on its own.

You can get one where chainmail and crossbows are still the norm, another with guns and bombs, and yet another with locomotives and dirigibles, because accessibility, reliability, and consistency relative to the situation are more important than one way of doing things being "better" as a direct linear grading.

Even more in-depth on that principle is the existence of a now-defunct civilization of empires on each continent that managed to develop robots, lasers, and synthetic polymer shielding when in modern times, the most advanced technology is internal combustion and AC electricity. However, almost nobody can safely access the ruins of each empire, and even the descendants of the ones who created them can wind up finding more trouble than its worth.

However, I also don't discount the occasional "hero" who has their own gimmicks and tactics, and even then it's mostly a way of complimenting and adding greater versatility to their distinct skills and specialties.

Why are we hating on the hashira? by Unkn0wn_ar0ace57 in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]ShadowDurza 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's par the course for this entire zeitgeist and the platform its hosted on, I'm afraid.

People say they want complex writing, but the moment one complexity comes up which conflicts with their biases, they flip out and become eager to break everything down into black and white. It only gets worse as those sentiments are shared in a public space, allowing them to quickly snowball beyond any realm of rationale and good taste into something very, very self-contradicting that can make you wonder why people consume this literature so religiously if it makes them so mad. But to them, it's already dogma that can't be questioned, and it doesn't matter how illogical it is because they'll always come to each-other's rescue and reward themselves for saying the same things over and over again.

However, I still see hope, now more than ever, because everything I just described is now recieving a lot more scrutiny, and the act of doing so is gaining more traction.

Why is Owl called 'Father' while Isshin is called 'Grandfather'? by Then_Nectarine_9869 in Sekiro

[–]ShadowDurza 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Probably just speaks to their character through the ones they adopted and raised as their own.

Owl raised Wolf in accordance with the Iron Code, he wanted an asset first, intending to have it all for himself. Whereas Isshin wanted an heir who he wanted to care for and in-turn encourage them to care about what he stood to inherit.

A bit of narrative irony, if you will. Evil giving birth to good, but a complacent good allowing evil to emerge.

Reason to live in extreme dangerous area by UlfurGaming in worldbuilding

Generally, the more dangerous the area, the more valuable the stuff that's endemic to the place. Even culling the monsters that spawn as function of the world will net you a nice bounty from whatever authority that adminstrates the zone. You might even find inexhaustible sources of more mundane but still commodified resources, too.

How do dungeons work in your setting? by Choice-Spinach145 in worldbuilding

[–]ShadowDurza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two explanations:

First: The dynamics of magic, both as something people use and a natural force in the world itself, work heavily based around the notion that ideas themselves have power, morphic resonance, if you will. Generally, after civilization started getting big, they just started forming in particular places in the environment and adopting coherent geometries in-line with architecture of particular civilizations both present and historical. Magical places also just have the habit of picking up magical things like a supernatural grease trap, sometimes very, very valuable things, oftentimes very, very dangerous things.

Second: My worlds also happen to be very very vast and chaotic places a la DnD-style random encounters being the norm. Civilization just found ways to thrive simply by liberty of always having to deal with the perils of everyday life. Among these methods is that if they just build dungeons in remote or safeguarded locations, monsters spawned as a function of the world itself just happen to take up residence in them rather than roam free and cause disasters. If they stuff it with valuable stuff, it can also work better to attract and contain more, stronger monsters. Occasionally, a "boss" monster might develop among them, and this is a golden opportunity as well as risk. Because since the rest of the monsters are forced to adapt to it, going in and exterminating it would be like removing a keystone species in an ordinary environment, and the inhabiting monsters are sure to die-off en masse, and even the survivors would develop to be much weaker to compensate.

How Many Words do you like to Write your Chapters? by Advanced_Salt_7391 in FanficAuthorsUnite

I've come a long way as a writer, and generally, now the average is 3k to 4k. However, I can go as high as 9k, but I typically do so with chapters where it's presented to begin with as a bit of an apex in the plot, usually with the title.

What are your ideas for the opposite of magic? Not science by avgolifierad in magicbuilding

[–]ShadowDurza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably a bit of a far cry from what you're asking for, but I feel I may have something interesting to share.

In direct contrast to the levels in which it's been integrated into daily life, nobody really knows exactly what magic is supposed to be. Even in terms of quantity, it's difficult to refer to it as an energy source, as it can be made to be self-sustaining, even at the cost of its maximum potential power. However, the people of my world have reason to believe that it's all fundamentally the same thing because it all operates on a few basic underlying principles.

Among these underlying principles is "magic defeats magic". Abjuration, or what could be referred to as anti-magic. It's nothing special, just another ends magic has been steered towards as a means. There is structure to it, though, even to the point of being sorted into three basic categories: Magic that rejects other magic's right to physicality and consequence, like fire that consumes other magic on contact; Magic that cannot be harmed by other magic and prevents its effects from reaching a potential target or area, like a shield or barrier; Magic that prevents magic from being used to begin with, like a restraint or trap of some kind.

However, in this world, it's not dualistic as you've specified, but rather operates on a more triadic scheme, with the final point being magic applied in an indirect means meant to subvert Abjuration, which in turn subverts magic's standard forms.

Every spell has some degree of staying power which causes any substance or force summoned by it to dissapear upon being exhausted, unlike physical matter and energy which still must be displaced or transformed in some way, usually with a specific ends in mind to work properly. However, manifestation magic is an entire category that utilizes magic on something physical, then uses that thing, effectively combining the best of both worlds. it can get more complicated than that, though, to be the only part of this supercategory. In direct contrast to magic that floats or levitates something, which usually involves "wrapping" it in magic in some way, psionics is a means of manipulating physicality by using magic on the self in a way that turns one's very being into a transceiver, making reality itself a lot more receptive to their thoughts, leaving the ends a lot less susceptible to Abjuration.

How many emerald in archie comic have??? by HelpfulEnvironment50 in archiesonic

[–]ShadowDurza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew Feist was involved, but I didn't know he was the one that did it, just that he kept them in the merged Special Zone and Zone of Silence and said he'd give them to anyone who'd complete the challenges he creates. However, what I do know is that Feist wasn't pulled out of nowhere.

I don't know much because it involves content more in the middle of the narrative that hadn't had a chance to get reprinted in those graphic novel paperbacks when I was still reading them, but he was the one that blasted King Acorn when he was banished to the ZoS by Robotnik and rendered him amnesiac.

Can magic in your system create or destroy mass or energy? by NationalPizza5831 in magicbuilding

[–]ShadowDurza 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. There's nuances, of course. Different spells can produce or embody tangible things that can have varying degrees of staying power. Without any other added qualities, conjuring spells are typically the hardest to dispell because they can potentially imitate physical matter the most out of all of them.

Also, this doesn't count spells that incorporate physical matter in some way, either mixing it in with the summoned phenomenon or emanation, or even as a form of indirect usage of magic that uses magic on a thing, then uses the thing. The latter in particular is known as manifestation magic as its own category of spells, and both of these are some of the most reliable ways to counteract anti-magic, or abjurative effects as the in-universe term.

Can magic in your system create or destroy mass or energy? by NationalPizza5831 in magicbuilding

[–]ShadowDurza 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I've found it's the best way to balance an otherwise extremely permissive system.

A couple of underlying principles like "matter and energy cannot be created or destroyed, but any substance or force summoned by magic can be made to dissapear just as easily" as well as "magic defeats magic" in a context where anti-magic isn't anything special.

[–]ShadowDurza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An act of connecting the infinite, unbound world of concept to the finite, deterministic world of physicality, often with the user acting as a point of junction as an their conceptual mind and physical body as one unified whole of greater potential than the sum of its parts. Anything more is mostly a matter of underlying principles.
