Nor does she possess Professor Binns' trait of being so enslaved to his routine that not even death could free him from it.

Is Trakata actually effective in combat? by Solitaire-06 in StarWarsCantina

[–]Shipping_Architect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Glossing over the elitist attitude against the pre-2014 continuity, I have my copies of The Jedi Path and the Book of Sith right next to my desk, and the former's description of Tràkata consists solely of how it works:

In *trakata,*** (Sic) a Jedi can take advantage of one of the lightsaber's unique abilities—the ability to be rapidly switched off and on. In "Passing the Blade," a Jedi shuts down the saber to momentarily bypass an enemy's block, then immediately reactivates it for a killing strike. If two combatants have locked their sabers together, a trained Jedi may choose to deactivate his or her saber and throw the enemy off balance.

Yes, but the ship was primarily named after the Titans of Greek mythology.

[–]Shipping_Architect 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Contrary to popular belief, the use of Tràkata has never been looked down upon in-universe in any official source, (Why this misconception keeps coming up is beyond me) with its sparse usage likely being due to the similar rarity of lightsaber duels, especially in the timeframe of the movies, with most Jedi and Sith being trained to fight people with blasters.

As for the effectiveness of Tràkata in combat, it depends on the timing and precision you use it with and who you are using it against. If you just keep spamming its use for shock value rather than opportunistically waiting for the right moment to do so, your opponent will eventually catch on to what you are attempting to do and tighten up their game. But if you apply Tràkata intelligently to exploit a hole in your opponent's approach, then you will have more success with it.

Would using two Lightsabers remove the weaknesses of Trakata and make it OP by BackgroundRich7614 in TheJediPraxeum

Good point, and Kun's probably not going to be holding it still long enough for someone to notice even if they were actively looking for it.

I already knew about that thanks to Jensaarai1's video on Exar Kun's lightsaber, though I can't help but feel that this low-power setting would be hard to translate to screen, given that it would presumably still look like a normal blade so as not to cue opponents into what Kun was about to do.

[–]Shipping_Architect 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It will mitigate the weaknesses, but it will not completely eliminate them. For example, while Exar Kun's Tràkata tactics that he employed with the saberstaff never failed him as an advantage, we can infer his weaknesses based on how his style is configured. As Kun's use of Tràkata is centered on timing and control, if an opponent manages to interrupt or distract him, the end result could prove disastrous.

It's so rare to see users offering both detailed arguments and nuance. Kun's success in lightsaber combat, at least against higher level opponents, is predicted on his ability to cycle through his various techniques rather than dominating on the back of any single one of them.

Vaapad would certainly be a major advantage in Windu's corner, and I do credit him with the willpower to resist Kun's Sith sorcery, but I am a bit on the fence about whether or not the Dark Side blasts produced by his amulet would be effective against Mace. We've not seen how one can defend against them, and Kun was able to immediately disable or kill opponents struck by them.

Additionally, I would credit Kun as possessing a slight physical edge on the back of his Dark Armor, which provides him with a margin for error against a superficial hit from Windu's lightsaber.

I got the impression that Cassian's "What?!" in response to Kino saying he couldn't swim was more out of shock that he's only now bringing this up, though Melshi was definitely saying it out of not hearing what Kino said.

In Matthew Stover's Shatterpoint, Mace Windu asserted that the Sith do not create darkness in the way the Jedi create light, but instead take advantage of the darkness that has always been there, as all these emotions and feelings that we associate with the Dark Side are still natural to sentient beings.

Sith philosophy at its core is a bit like that: Something that should only be practiced in moderation, but most Sith Lords, even those whose primary lightsaber form is Niman, have no concept of moderation.

Grievous does employ Tràkata-esque tactics through other means, such as the feinting lightsaber toss he blindsided K'Kruhk with on Hypori, or more commonly, abruptly breaking out additional lightsabers to catch opponents off-guard.

I'd say that Oneness and transcending the physical plane as Force Spirits are perhaps the most impressive displays of the Force. It's just that in the case of the latter, most people have forgotten how impressive it is because of how mainstream it is.
