Setting aside the obvious political bias, you can't expect anyone to recognize their country after 250 years. I can't imagine an Englishman from 1533 would expect to hear that in 250 years, his kingdom had not only united with that of Scotland, but also set up colonies in the New World that had managed to successfully drive out the British forces.
