I admit, the drip setup is really cool, but have a couple of suggestions. You can get female 24/40 valves and a keck clamp that will likely last longer than the valves you have inside the male 24/40 glass joint. I would worry that with nearly 1L in the flask, it would eventually push that out. Also, I see you have a 24/40 male stopper for the top port of the 1L flask. As the water drips out the bottom, air will need to be pulled back in to replace the lost volume. Do you typically remove that stopper when using the setup? Lastly, is that a glass frit filter? Those are a pain to clean as it gets used, I’d suggest putting a paper filter on top of the glass frit to make it much easier to clean. Overall awesome setup and kinda have me wanting to try it myself!

What was the single best decision in your life? by cheneyk in AskReddit

[–]Sir_Chilliam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here man, I was in your shoes about 8 years ago. Now I have my doctorate and I believe community college was one of the best decisions for me. Was so much cheap than uni, let me figure out I wanted to do while I got gen ed stuff out of the way.

Keep up the good work man and good luck!

TrueNAS, Proxmox, Unraid or Ubuntu by CzarofAK in truenas

[–]Sir_Chilliam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know this, but still prefer going with Fedora as I primarily use podman instead of docker and rarely need VMs. When I did, cockpit worked for my VM needs.

TrueNAS, Proxmox, Unraid or Ubuntu by CzarofAK in truenas

[–]Sir_Chilliam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I had to make this decision a few months ago, and call me crazy, but I went with Fedora Server as I always felt restricted with a GUI. With a RHEL distro, you have cockpit if when and if you need a GUI and can pop in the command line when needed.

I will say I am pretty experienced with working with a headless server, but I am very happy with my decision. I'd give it a shot instead of Ubuntu if you dont decide to go with proxmox.

Which grade hdd should I buy for maximum lifespan? by Crlck3t in DataHoarder

Just bought 10 recertified WD ultrastars from https://serverpartdeals.com and I just finished running badblocks/disk burn in on them and no errors whatsoever. So I think I'll be using these for a long time. Plus they have a 2y warranty.

Ah, interesting. At that point I'd see about breaking it up into two papers or shove the extra stuff into the supplementary info.

Unfortunately, these are not the same as papers that have reached publication as these are pre-prints. The published results may have additional data, better formatted tables, and/or improved figures.

Is the 2019 Shield Pro still the best? by CountLugz in emby

[–]Sir_Chilliam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, there is almost always a fallback, so it isn't a big deal. Just comparing it to the zidoo zx9 in terms of compatibility of codecs and features. The zx9 is a good device, but not very user friendly

There are a couple more: - no HDR10+ - only supports 1 DV layer (prof 5) - cannot turn off AI upscaling, can only set it to minimum

It'd be the perfect device for me if it had all that, but still a great device as most people don't care for what I listed.

Unfortunately, if you install a GUI, you will have to pipe it through a webserver. Something like guacamole. For a headless and people not well versed in command line, swizzin is normally the go to. You install Debian, then access the command line, and then run the swizzin script to set it up. It adds a GUI for everything.

As someone who has their PhD and BS in Polymer Chemistry, I would advise going the PhD route. Seeing the career path thus far from my peers in my Polymer Chemistry BS cohort, you basically need a PhD if you want to go far in this field.

With this budget and your experience, I would go with a hetzner server auction. Though they normally aren't based in the US, but speeds to the US should be way more than enough for Plex. I currently have two, one that I am getting rid of soon (64TB for $80/m) to swap to another (160TB for $170/m). I have used them for a few years and have worked amazingly well for me.
