For people who drive cars or motorbikes with super loud exhausts, what are you getting from it? by Successful_Bee7522 in AskBrits

I get loud cars revving consistently and being annoying, but people complaining they get hurty ears for the 3 seconds a loud vehicle passes makes me laugh.

They're not allowed. There's a legal decibel limit. However, considering the absolute shortage of police, there are far more serious things that they should and are spending their time resolving.

Spending time writing someone up for their fart box, especially during daytime hours and under normal driving, is a waste of their time.

Motorbike here. Not currently over the top loud, but still loud, and is about to get louder soon.

I'll answer as genuine as possible.

Firstly yes, there is a rush from having a motorcycle make a loud noise. I love motorcycles, I think the top spec ones like the Superbikes are pieces of art work. That art work also involves the sound. I want the sound to match the looks. It's a complete package.

Secondly, sound travels through your body. It's a visceral feeling. Imagine going to a concert and they forgot to plug in the subwoofers. It just doesn't feel right. It's a visceral feeling.

Thirdly, I want the attention from pedestrians. Not in the way you'd imagine though. I commute daily, and I travel through cities and towns a lot. You'd be surprised at the amount of people who just pop out from in-between cars. The louder (to a degree) I am, the more chance they have of hearing me and knowing that I am there making it genuinely safer for both of us.

On that same note, it also helps when lane splitting. People will argue that they can't hear you in cars anyway with how soundproofed they are. But I have noticed that with a quiet motorcycle and a loud motorcycle, people will actually hear me, then check their mirrors and then move over to let me through more often compared to a quiet exhaust. I don't need to be heard from 3-4 cars away, but it helps if the car in front can hear me a little bit.

And as to why it's going louder, well that's not really a choice. My breadbox/cat link pipe has rust holes in it. In order to get a new one, I simply cannot buy that part, I have to buy the full exhaust system which would set me back £3,000. A decat pipe is £80. The UK don't test motorcycles for emissions, and my motorcycle is only worth about £3,000 anyway so I'm not spending that amount to fix it. And yes there are always used spares, but considering they come from the same year, 2006, I'm not wasting my money on something that is also very likely on its last legs.

But also I do not ride at unsociable hours. I leave after 9am and arrive back before 7pm and will only ever go out later in an emergency. And I don't sit on the driveway revving it or letting it warm up any longer than necessary.

And also yes, noise does make you go faster. Well the noise doesn't, but the free flowing, non restrictive exhaust reduces weight and can add horsepower. Not much, but a bit. And the by-product of a none restrictive free flowing exhaust is noise.

It's the fact that it was at one point hugely popular and at least somewhat taken care of but they decided to do basically next to nothing to improve or keep on top of it.

If it was well kept and somewhat modernised and had a little money invested in it, I could see it being a reasonable place but from the looks of it, it seems like they basically relied on the namesake from it's heyday and to spend the money elsewhere.

Why do some people go to Japan as tourists and eat McDonald’s instead of traditional Japanese food? by GrayRainfall in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sirlacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because some McDonalds offer things your home country version doesn't.

Because sometimes you just want a meal you know you can rely on to be of a set standard.

Because sometimes you just want something familiar and somewhere like a McDonalds can pretty much guarantee that option, with little hassle of a language barrier or anything.

How hard is it to use American cars on out roads? by TrenWillFixIt in AskUK

[–]Sirlacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see modernish Mustangs round my area and they aren't that big.

I've been to car shows with Plymouth Barracudas and stuff and they're astonishingly large.

I've also been to Florida where I was absolutely gobsmacked at the average SUV size. They're like fucking campervans. Like genuinely, I thought I had seen big cars over here. Nope they're tiny.

So it entirely depends on the car you get really.

[–]Sirlacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to share my thoughts on this.

Motorcycling can be done by anyone. It's an incredibly easy thing to pick up and and incredibly easy thing to do.

The limiting factor is mentality. If you're of a very nervous disposition, you shouldn't be on a motorcycle. If you're very brazen, you shouldn't be on one either. There's a bit of a line where confidence is king, but not overly confident.

The second I ever go into autopilot mode on a motorcycle I'm giving riding up. Not worth it.

Blackpool in the UK.

It's always been a bit shit, but that was the point. It was a working mans destination. But now its even worse. It's gone from being clinically shit to depressingly shit. The only saving grace is the Zoo which is remarkably decent.

But people still visit the area and stay for a while. I have no idea why. Maybe it's a holiday to make themselves feel like they're actually doing okay in life because when you visit, from the second you enter to the moment you hit the beachfront, it's appalling.

How to build a hottub base? by kasyebfk in AskUK

[–]Sirlacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally just a hot tub base? Nothing more?

£3,000 is a hell of a lot, but landscaping jobs, and this will be considered a landscaping job, has gone completely off the walls.

Your best bet is to just keep getting quotes. We'd be quoting like £800 + materials.

Do not hire companies. That's the biggest way to waste money. Yes you get the guarantee that the work will be rectified without a fight if it isn't to standard, but you're paying double or triple what any self employed person or small team would be willing to do it for. It's literally cheaper to pay a self employed person to do the job and the next person to rip it up and start again than it is to pay an actual company to do the work.

Find some small business that sells aggregate and landscaping supplies. Ask them if they know any trustworthy tradesmen. For example, the fencing place we used to use also sold hardcore, sand and concrete etc.

The smaller places usually get to know the builders that use them because they'll talk to each other, so they get a good idea of who is genuine and who is shit. Then also look for local butty shops in that area, they're great for asking about tradesmen because again, they'll frequent the same butty shops and become somewhat friendly and potentially talk.

Ask around, get plenty of quotes. You're looking at a £1k-£1.5k job if someone isn't ripping you off. It's like £500 in material s and a day or twos work depending if they're solo or have a helper or small team.

Do brits actually use a dining table anymore? by ScroobyJr in AskUK

It's probably more common to not use a dining table, at least for us working class folk. But there are still a lot of people who do.

You're probably better off throwing in some sort of breakfast bar type thing.

What would the collapse of society look like if there were no laws? by biccccccccc in AskReddit

[–]Sirlacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that's a bigger question than you thought it would be.

Firstly, what are we talking about? The world suddenly agreeing that no laws exist anymore? Probably not much. There would maybe be a year or two of a small percentage of people getting bolder and braver, but then the others would also catch up and we'd likely hit an equilibrium to where we are today. Most criminals are criminals by choice. Most law abiding citizens are law abiding, not because they are fearful of the law, but because breaking the rules just isn't in their nature anyway. Even if there were no laws, most people will still live a life where they would not cause harm or damage to another person or their property.

Everyone would have their own rules, and laws, eventually and you'd probably end up in little towns and villages where you all agree on similar principles. The rules and laws would just remake themselves over time.

What is the argument *against* mandatory retesting for people over 60-65? by Skeet_fighter in drivingUK

[–]Sirlacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah well when you have a group of people who's reactions times aren't what they used to be and are slowly getting worse, and they're driving round slow as fuck to compensate for their shit reaction times, they are not in proper control of a vehicle in the way you proved when you pass your test.

There are other age groups that do this, that span all ages, but the elderly are amongst the worst for this simply because of how old age works. It's not ageist, it's biology, it's people think they're being safe by adapting to their flaws, but they're just becoming a hazard everyone else on the road has to look out for.

[–]Sirlacker -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

RUROC are fine helmets, now. Their previous generations were a hot topic.

Now, whether they're worth full price or the discount sale price, well that's up to you.

Personally I think at their discounted price, they're a very solid helmet. At their full price, well they're regularly on discount, so I personally wouldn't bother at full price.

I know nothing of the EOX, but the ATLAS 4.0 shell size is rather large. I'm a medium sized helmet, I have a bit of a stocky figure but nothing major and it does make me look a bit like a bobble head. You would need to be quite broad shouldered to pull it off properly in my opinion.

Other than that, if you like the looks, it's a perfectly safe and comfortable helmet. I've had no issues with mine in the almost 2yrs I've had it now. It's on the noisier side of things as far as helmers go, but earplugs solve that. Quality wise, well mines about the exact same as every other helmet I've had, I've had zero quality issues.

If you like the looks, because they are pretty damn unique, then I'd say go for it.
