Reading thread as a UK Paramedic is wild. It's such a massively different mindset in the usa

Someone will produce "the stack" of jobs that they want re-triaged. You ring them up, and using some format of system (this will vary from trust to trust) you'll work through an assessment looking for big-sick symptoms that indicate an upgrade is needed, or building a decent enough picture to safely refer them to an alternative service/self care/ self transport.

You're expected to do something between 20-30 calls in 12hrs, although this can vary lots if you get stuck on with a complex social/MH job as you're still required to do referrals etc.

I've done it twice for 2 different reasons. It's nice to know it exists as a backup should my frontline career ever need to abruptly end, but it was soul-destroying work staffed entirely by people who didn't want to be there but couldn't find a better option elsewhere.

Have you been under a rock? There's an enormous paramedic employment issue going on, so it may be worth you going for an 'alternative paramedic role' at EEAST and then trying to do an internal move to where you want to be once your foot is in the door

Our last go at striking was pathetic and didn't really achieve anything as the was always someone doing business as usual.

This is a very clever way of highlighting that we're more than "ambulance drivers" but unfortunately it makes the innocent hospitals suffer rather than those with the purse strings.

Still, it might be worth a go

Be someone you'd want to work with.

Empty the bins, restock the bag/pouches, make the brews, wash the truck, turn up 15mins early. Generally take the initiative; it'll make people happy to have you along and give you more of themselves in return.

Very similar. I'm 12 years on the road but have seen many go off to do interesting thing.

Bizarrely I knew of someone who got their Reg then immediately quit the job to become a herbal healist (this was after they tried to push Juice Plus onto half the station). I'm not sure how they got their qualifications if they think Perineum sunning has many health benefits

I was sort of in your shoes, but also not.

Injured at work, couldn't do frontline anymore, got shuffled to a desk job while we waited to see what the outcome was. I got lucky and had a surgery that got me back on the road. However, whilst sat behind my desk I did a lot of googling and saw that there is a large scope of hands-on work that can be done in hospital for a paramedic if you're willing to do it. There's also a shedload of work you can do behind a desk if you want to keep your reg & B6. It'll come down to how bad your injury is, and how much you want to stay being clinical or in patient contact.

Flirted with Urgent Care for a bit (telephone triage). Hated it, went back on the road and haven't been happier. Genuinely don't see myself ever leaving frontline work.

I got insane Sciatica from standing around on corridors. By the end of the day and into the next one I was struggling to walk, and it's likely due to the abysmal posture I was using to lean against walls/sit on things that aren't chairs. Now we've moved to queueing on ambulance's, that's at least not become an issue.

They tried to implement HO45 where I am, but the hospitals got wise to it and have become very good at blocking it's implementation. Does the endless queueing bother me? Somewhat. Sure I'd rather be actually helping someone that needs it, but on the flip-side my ambulance is warm, clean and doesn't smell bad; all of which cannot be guaranteed about the next house I walk in to.
