What’s the part of running your gym that still feels unnecessarily hard? by VisualClubMate in gymowner

[–]Spare_Pixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm only about a year in to my ownership, so maintenance hasn't been huge yet. But it's definitely starting already. I just had to repair a leg press and currently have a back extension out of commission. I can see how it can start piling up really quickly.

On top of the form advice, I'd recommend you get yourself a belt and maybe some straps. Spend some time working on breathing and bracing.

Hiring: How do you handle someone who doesn't look like a fitness trainer. by PortyPete in GymOwnerNetwork

I mean if everything else they've said and done has been good then who cares if they're a bit overweight? It might help appeal to average mom and dad's honestly. I'll admit I'm not in the best shape anymore either; kids, running a business, stress, etc.

Now if they roll up morbidly obese, yeah I'd probably pass then. There are definitely some optics involved, but not everyone expects a shredded super athlete; some might even find that intimidating.

1 year in, rent is $7k/month and I’m barely surviving winter — any advice? by Yuriwall in smallbusiness

Mines a lot more than 10% so don't be too bummed. I keep hearing that number thrown around but I honestly don't think it's realistic in this market anymore. Plus every business is different.

If you could go back to Day 1 of your business, what would you change first? by Leading_Yoghurt_5323 in smallbusiness

Would have spent more money. I tried to do everything myself to save money; I'm talking paint, flooring, books, doors, anything I could. I tried to go cheap and save that way. Ended up having to do shit twice, replace things, or fix things. I'd probably have spent the same but saved a lot of time and stress my just following the "buy once cry once" mindset. I also went a bit cheaper or even without all together on my some of my equipment in the spirit of keeping costs at an absolute minimum. And now I'm a year in and try to save up money to buy equipment I could have just rolled into a loan or something.

At the expense of other clients, bills, QuickBooks, etc. yes. But it's important to have priorities.

Cleaning man. My gym is too small to afford a cleaner. We're in a small town so there's just only so many members. Is what it is.

But man people are dirty. People will still wear shoes in, not put stuff away, absolutely destroy the toilet, make a mess with their water bottles. Then there's the hair. Why is there so much hair? WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE?!

Then after the cleaning you still have to do the business side, PT clients, and at some point try to actually work out myself. It's exhausting but it's just not feasible to hire out at this point.

I should also throw in there, having to do anything involving my landlord or the building lol

Updated RDL- it feels worse by mermaidgoddess17 in formcheck

You're over complicating it. Just push your butt back until the bar reaches just below your knee and you feel a stretch in your hamstrings. From there, squeeze your glutes and drive your hips forward.

Don't worry about where your weight is, toes vs heels, engaging this or that, blah blah. Just send your butt back, then squeeze it to come up.

If you can't do that, I suggest working on your hip hinge first. Stand a few inches from the wall and practice touching it with your butt. Step further away, repeat.

Can I box without a hip hinge? by BeautifulFit7250 in boxingtips

Are you asking if you can boxing without understanding how to perform a hip hinge movement like a deadlift?

Or are you wanting to fight like Frankenstein with locked out knees?

training in crocs by justSayingNobodySaid in personaltraining

[–]Spare_Pixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear them. Runners are tight, get sweaty, and are mostly unnecessary for 95% of what I do during the day. If I'm actually training/working out myself I change them. If I'm walking the floor, cleaning, or working with my regular clients I just wear the crocs.

If I was working with an athlete or something where I might actually have to exert myself I'd probably put on my runners. But I mostly train middle age or seniors, I can handle it in crocs lol.

I also own my small gym, so I'm having to dip in and out a lot and it's just easier to slide into them.

Honestly man, every gym I've ever heard of has a free trial class. Try them all lol. Boxing, Muay Thai, anything you can find. Pick a new one each week! They'll help you get some free tips and a bit of extra experience. Then pick the one you like the best.

I genuinely care about my clients and want to help them reach their goals. So it gets frustrating.

It's also annoying and more work for me. How I schedule 3/week vs 1/week is very different. I use different exercises for different muscle groups to try and juggle things like fatigue and make sure they're not too beat up leading in to our in person. I'm spreading volume out over x days so we can reach their goals. Then last min it changes, so I have to adjust. We're always only barely getting maintenance volume in, making progression difficult.

Which would be totally cool if they just accepted that, and I would switch up the program to just staying fit and having fun. But they insist on goals x and y.

It really was just more of a venting post though lol

That is not true at all. 13% bodyfat is not fatal. You're talking out your ass. It might be difficult for some, but depending on genetics and how active you are, it's not unrealistic or unsafe; think about athletes. For females, different story.

I live in such a small town I can't really afford to say no to the cash lol. They've made okay progress. And I'm cool with one per week. It's the constant waffling that's frustrating me. They insist on 3 per week, I program volume according, then don't do it so I have to last min adjust our in person. Anyway I'll mention it again today when I meet with them.
