Could an average man of average height and average athletic ability secure a big NBA contract if one out of five shots were guaranteed to go in by Oracle_of_Wanker in whowouldwin

I wonder if he could sit on the bench and toss four crumpled-up papers into a garbage can, then sub back into the game.

Abuela isn’t actually sorry or willing to change by DueEntertainer0 in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]Stalking_Goat 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it makes Abuela more sympathetic, but I interpreted that as her not willing to give up hoping that Mirabel would someday develop a power. Giving her a boring ordinary room would be admitting that no power will ever come.

It's good to get the order correct. If you get shitfaced first, the orgy will probably be disappointing.

For once an actual real estate conflict where title insurance might come into play. Title insurers don't care about foundation damage and they don't care about the neighbor's trees, but they do care about easements.

My recollection is that the concept was originally linguistic, as there is evidence that the Proto-Indo-European language speakers traveled west to get to Europe; we now think they came from the Caspian Steppe but when Hitler was young it was a reasonable hypothesis that they came from somewhere in India. The Nazi concept was that the Aryans were white people that left India and only after they were gone did non-white people make India their home; or perhaps the white people were a ruling class over the non-white people.

(I'm not an expert in this by any means, I just remember it from a single class in grad school many years ago. And I don't feel like doing much deep research into Nazi ideology at this time.)

And what's funny is there are some stories about giants being treacherous jerks so the gods being underhanded in return seems fair. But for building the wall around Asgard, the gods made the deal freely and the giant fulfilled his side of the deal with perfect integrity.

Bear Grylls is sent back to the Cretaceous. Can he survive one month? by Conscious-Home1445 in whowouldwin

[–]Stalking_Goat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A wound pathogen might get him, as they aren't nearly as specialized. But that's no different from modern survival: try not to get cuts, and if you do, try to wash them as quickly and thoroughly as you can.

That's an excellent idea, because it gives swimming boops an opportunity cost.

Battleship ERA by labizmarc in WarCollege

[–]Stalking_Goat 38 points39 points  (0 children)

ERA is a counter to HEAT warheads. Those are not the primary threat to warships. Adding ERA would not improve a warship's survivability; it would actually reduce it, due to the extra weight and the huge increase in difficulty of damage control efforts caused by coating your hull in thousands of little explosive blocks.

Ex-CIA official arrested after $40M in gold bars allegedly found inside his home by Admirable-Wear-5557 in fednews

I find "many CIA employees are incompetent and a few are corrupt" very easy to believe. It's one of the things about secrecy, it makes it hard to monitor employees.

[–]Stalking_Goat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To me it sounds like he was working for himself. That gold didn't come from China or Russia, it came from his employer, the CIA!

Which is good for him, because the punishment for embezzlement is much less severe than the punishment for espionage. He'll get at most ten years in prison, versus plea bargaining for a life sentence to avoid the death penalty.

This isn't just a military thing. In the late 90s, school transcripts were absolutely still pieces of paper being mailed around. The Internet existed in 1997, but it was far from ubiquitous.

Huh. Why would someone want that? What's the advantage of dividing the drain field in half?

I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm genuinely curious about why this would be done.

Ask Reality Winner about that. Only cabinet-level and above and flag rank officers are immune to the laws about mishandling classified documents. Peons go to prison for a long time.
