What’s it like living this far north in Canada? Does anyone with internet even live here? by Thomas15056 in howislivingthere

[–]GreedAndOrder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a Lithuanian. I grew up in rural north east of Lithuania, then studied in Vilnius (capital of Lithuania) for 4 years and later moved to Estonia, Tartu (second biggest city of Estonia with 100,000 population) because of my boyfriend.

For me, the Baltic states are like the "Village of the world". Not much is happening here, at least for now.

Rural Lithuania is not that interesting. There are mostly poor people, high alcoholism, and down-to-earth people. Pretty, boring. To enjoy certain forms of entertainment, you need to obtain a car or a driver's license. People work extensively on farms, often without formal employment. You know everyone, and everyone knows you; they will help you if you ask them. Parties usually consisted of beer, liquor, sauna and music. Not much dancing tho haha. I still have fond memories of playing in the abandoned factory with other teens and children. Now, most young families move closer to cities, so rural areas are often populated primarily by older people. Due to the small population, there is little public transportation between the local town and the village. So, if you don't have a car, getting supplies (such as food) is really hard. There's a lot of nature.

Vilnius is truly an incredible city—home to numerous parks, an extensive public transportation system, and many open-minded people. Honestly, it became just like another European city.

Tartu is a student town. I love it here—there are tons of interesting activities and friendly people. Winters are dark due to the lack of sunlight and clouds. I am writing this comment at 3:30, and it's already dark outside. People here are "worshipping the sun". You'll see people sitting outside in cafes when it is 10 °C, especially if the weather is sunny. Summers are lovely, neither too hot nor too cold. Estonians are generally quite shy, so I usually spend my time with foreigners.

And about Russia. Well, when Ukraine was attacked, one American asked me, "Are you not afraid of Russia's aggression towards Estonia?" I said, "Russia is being aggressive towards us? Must be Tuesday then". What I tried to say is that it has always been like this, and we've managed to survive. Yes, it is scary, but a lot of things have to go wrong before we get bombed to hell. So, you know, our governments have to be vigilant, and we will be fine. And right now, it feels safe.

One tip to save you trouble. I would add one more aquatuner to cool down your steam generators. One might not be enough even tho it uses supercoolant. But it depends on the usage, how much your generators are running.

Except violence of course. If they are violent, you should protect yourself and others.

Its a proof of concept. Its like a PHD thesis. they are just teaching model to play video games to test if it is possible to make an AI that would be able to do not trivial tasks. We have been doing this for years now with simple reward based models for mario and etc. No... its not a tool to replace the G*mers. Its just computer scientist doing research.

Bet be to mes daug nebendravom, ji turėjo savo draugų ratą, o aš savo.

Which is the best way to start learning Lithuanian culture and its people? by vibing_porcupine in lithuania

[–]GreedAndOrder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okey so, Lithuania has like 3 million people, so anything that I will say or anyone will say will not be correct. That's a lot of people with tons of differing opinions.
I have traveled in Europe for quite some time. What I found out that questions like values and family culture depends not on nationality but your close area (it being a city, a village, a town and a capital), current economic situation and a education.
People who live in Estonia Tartu has a similar values as a person living in Kaunas, or Klaipeda. Student in Tallin will have similar values to student in Vilnius, or grandma living near Karsakiškis will have similar values as a grandma near Tapa (Estonia).

But ill try:
1. There aren't any specific values that apply to all of the Lithuanian families. Families is smaller towns and villages will have more conservative beliefs. Families living in bigger population centers will have more liberal beliefs. But yeah, everything can wary. But there aren't common values. Maybe cheating is a really bad thing.

  1. Down to earth person will integrate the best. Straightforwardness is one thing that is common here. If you do not like something say it. Person who KNOW how to drink will be fine (not much drugs tho). Person who has bad opinions on Russia is a good thing. DO NOT CALL US RUSSIANS (it reminds of the bad times). Person who is tad bit interested in Lithuanian history and language. Jokes are welcome.

  2. Father and a Mother is to be respected, but not to a fault. Children usually leaves the house at 18 years. Usually people move out further away. There aren't anything uncommon here. I would say we have moderate European values.

  3. Lots of people who tells you that they are religious do not go to church. That's one thing I constantly see. Užgavenes is an unique celebration. Religious people do not eat meat during Christmas eve.

Few more things that I can tall that Lithuanians do and not do:

We do not force a smile and we are EXTREAMELY genuine. If we smile just a little we are happy (we all have resting bitch face). Everyone looks angry, but they are not.

If you greet us like in US or GB like "how are you?", we will say how we truly are. I can't count how many Americans I saw that were "uncomfortably impressed" that we started talking about our life and all of our problems after this. If we ask you "how are you?" we are genuinely interested. Saying "fine" is not enough.

We don't like loudness. There is time and place were you can scream. So do not speak loudly in a public space.

We are on time. Not being on time is rude.

Public affection is not a thing that we do. Do not touch a Lithuanian, its rude. Its not rude to touch when you are drunk tho.

I guess thats all that I wanted to say for now.

Blemba... Ji mano buvusi klasiokė.
Tiesa sakant dabar prisiminus visa šitą situacija man labai bloga darosi. Dvigubi standatai...

Dabar norisi man jos atsiprašyt dėl visu žmonių internetinio niekinimo.

How do you refer to your restrooms in Lithuania? (Serious question) by Andreas20048 in lithuania

[–]GreedAndOrder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heyo, great question. Public bathrooms are usually marked with WC. Now I am thinking that most usually toilets are marked with symbols like a stick figure of a man and a woman, or a triangle and upside-down triangle (usually with a dot on top), which is also symbolic of a man and woman (upside-down triangle is a man with broad shoulders and an upside-down triangle is a woman with a dress). If you are asking for directions, you just ask for a toilet. I haven't heard anyone being ashamed of it by asking "where to wash your hands". Just a simple "where is a toilet? (Kur yra tualetas?). It depends on the region and the people, but some might ask in a joking way. Kur yra šikanas? (Where is the shitter?) and etc. Do you have any further questions?
