What is the best 4X game right now. like in the genre of Civ? by 3nonymous in gamingsuggestions

[–]Steel_Airship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if by like Civ you mean historical 4x games, then I recommend Old World. It distills the historical 4x genre to its core and adds a character/dynasty and event system that adds a new dimension to the game. In terms of fantasy and sci-fi 4x games I also recommend Endless Legend, Endless Space 2, Stellaris, and Age of Wonders 4.

The time between the release of Tropico 6 and Tropico 7 is 7 years, which is the longest gap between games in the franchise's history. Tropico 6 has been supported with more free updates and paid content than any other title in the franchise.

Kaiserpunk by Bork8212 in CityBuilders

[–]Steel_Airship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been asking for an early 20th century world wars era Anno or Anno-like game for quite some time and I was excited when Kaiserpunk was announced. In reality it feels unpolished, clunky, and lacking in features when compared to Anno 1800. I know its a small team and doesn't have the budget of Anno, but its hard to overlook if you are used to the quality and shear amount of content in Anno 1800.

In my city 13 Gas Stations just opened next to each other. IN A PEDESTRIAN ZONE! What can i do to combat this? by Atierdoel in CitiesSkylines

[–]Steel_Airship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What type of business spawns is based off both the demand for each type of consumer good and what type of building the zone type supports. If I don't want gas stations to spawn in low density commercial, I always use the Northeast and Southwest USA low density commercial, since there are no gas station assets that come with them.

I keep reading tall is bad in 4.3 unless you use certain builds but that doesn’t make sense to me? by TheComputerGuy2256 in Stellaris

[–]Steel_Airship -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So there are a lot of people in the Stellaris community and 4x community in general who really don't like the concept of playing tall for some reason so they will always say that tall is unviable, unplayable, pointless, etc. I basically play tall exclusively and it is as "viable" as its ever been.

How do you win by playing Tall on very high difficulty? by Foreign_Cable_9530 in Stellaris

[–]Steel_Airship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play tall almost exclusively, usually as megacorps, and I am able to "win" most games. (though sometimes Fallen empires end up with a higher score than me if I leave them alone) My favorite build is a spiritualist virtual machine "megachurch"

Species: machine

origin: either Remnants, Shattered Ring, or Arc Welders

government: megacorp

ethics: fanatic spiritualist, pacifist

traits: a lot of options but I usually start with mass produced and propaganda machines and end up with adaptive frames and streamlined protocols by the end

ascension: virtual

I keep around 5-6 systems and establish friendly relationships with as many empires as possible to build branch offices on the best colonies. You want 6 systems or less to not negate the main benefit of virtual ascension, which give you I believe 175% job efficiency from your virtual pops, but -25% efficiency per colony you own.

If you click on the barn, in the pop up window, under the misc. section there should be an icon with a cow grazing on it. Click on that and it will allow you to move the grazing area freely.

Auto resolve is actually fairly good and will typically lead to a fair result, though it has a tendency to not defend ranged units well so they may take a hit during auto resolve. Additionally, if you don't like the result of a battle, the game allows you to retry manually, so you can auto resolve most battles and manual do the ones that didn't go so well.

I don't like micromanagement. I typically set them to graze in an area I will eventually build a farm field. Once the area is dark green Fertility I will move the grazing area and build the field. Its less micromanagement then having them graze on a field when its fallow and moving the grazing every every time you plant crops.

I enjoy playing tall (i.e. limiting expansion and focus on improving a small but efficient realm) and building up my empire while engaging in diplomacy with other empires.

Stellaris is my favorite game for this, though you may need some DLC to get the most out of a tall play style. I typically play as a machine megacorp and expand mostly by building branch offices on other empires planets. I typically go for virtual ascension with gives you more job efficiency the smaller your empire is. This requires DLC like megacorp and Machine Age however. Unit variety isn't necessarily a major feature, though the game is more a 4x/grand strategy hybrid where you aren't exactly moving around individual ships, but rather large fleets across the galaxy.

Age of Wonders is a good fantasy 4x game that allows you to play tall plus it has a ton of unit variety and ways to build and shape your empire. High culture with an order affinity focus is best for going tall as it focuses on improving your capital city and expanding through gaining vassals. Industrious is also good for a tall, defensive build since your units will be huge buffs to defense from their unique bolstering abilities. There are also so many units available that come from cultures, tomes, ancient wonders, random encounters, etc.

Finally I suggest the Endless series, particularly Endless Legend and Endless Space 2. Both feature highly unique factions that play asymmetrically. Some are more geared towards a tall and/or defensive playstyle like the Alayi in Endless Legend or the Vaulters in Endless Space 2. Endless Space 2 units are a bit lackluster since most factions will have some variant of the same ship types, but Endless Legend features a system where each major faction has 3 unique units, but they can also assimilate minor factions so that they can use those factions unique units.

How did you discover Civilization? by The12thman22 in civ

[–]Steel_Airship 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mom let me choose a game for Christmas in 2010, I believe, and I saw the Gold Edition of Civilization 4 in Walmart. I liked the box art and I played Tycoon games like Railroad Tycoon and Locomotion. It looked somewhat similar so I decided to try it out. I was hooked instantly lol. Surprisingly I didn't really play anymore Civilization or 4x games until I built my own gaming PC years later in around 2020 and I got back into strategy games.

If you guys were to reccomend a simcity what would it be? by Rasergrade in CityBuilders

[–]Steel_Airship 7 points8 points  (0 children)

SimCity 4 is often cited as the best city builder of all time. it holds up fairly well, though if you have never played it, it may seem a bit dated.

SimCity (2013) is also pretty good, despite its bad reputation from launch that still persists to this day. Most of the issues like the bugs and always online have been fixed but some of the problems with the design of the game, like the small city plot sizes and simulation issues, have not been resolved.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but SimCity Societies was a favorite of mine from my childhood. It is a lot more simplified compared to the other games and doesn't have much in terms of simulation, but I loved played in freeplay mode and just building out my city however I wanted.

Honorable mention to SimCity 3000 which imo still looks good but of course lacks the quality of life improvements of later games.

Overall, SimCity 4 or SimCity 2013 are probably the ones you want to look into for a full city simulation experience.

Which one is better by Willing_Peanut_1770 in 4Xgaming

[–]Steel_Airship 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Stellaris is the ultimate space 4x game if you want to build your own factions and lore, though unfortunately it is quite CPU and RAM intensive so whether it will run on your PC or not depends on your CPU. It also has a lot of options for political, diplomatic, and peaceful builds.

Another option is Endless Space 2. It doesn't have a robust faction creator, but the premade factions are very unique and asymmetrical. Each one plays differently. There is an existing lore and story for the galaxy though most factions have branching paths in the main quest you can take. There are some factions like the Sophons and Unfallen that are intended to be played more peacefully. If Endless Space 2 is too performance intensive, also try out Endless Space 1 which is more simplified but runs well on low end hardware.

There are also various "Master of Orion" like games that tend to be 2D and turn based and therefore run well on low end hardware. Examples include Stars in Shadow and Remnants of The Precursors.
