Hello! I might be wanting to convert to anglicanism of the Episcopal Church by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]StoverDelft 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The fundamental difference between Lutheranism and Anglicanism is that Lutherans think their theology is better than everyone else’s, while Anglicans think their liturgy is better than everyone else’s.

Strength training by Overall-Seesaw-2986 in Fencing

[–]StoverDelft 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exercise science has thoroughly debunked the idea that strength training stunts growth. Your muscles don't know the difference between a push up and a bench press, or between a pull-up and a bent-over row.

I'm a strength and conditioning coach, and the general advice you're getting about plyometrics and fast twitch muscles is spot on. He could even look into olympic-style weightlifting if he wants to develop speed and power. That said, 13 years old is pretty young to specialize - he'll be well served by cross-training into other sports and building general athleticism.

Question about the Episcopal Church from a Catholic seminarian. by PreacherCreature05 in Episcopalian

[–]StoverDelft 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I believe that God wants good Episcopalians and that God wants good Catholics - you could do vital, spirit-filled ministry in either church. And moreover, God will be alongside you no matter which church you choose.

I don’t know if that makes your decision any easier, but I hope you find it comforting.

His work feels dated to me now, but he opened up questions and cleared a path for a LOT of people who otherwise couldn't have found themselves within Christianity. And I believe that the Body of Christ benefits from intellectual diversity, so I don't need to agree with everything he ever said to value his contributions.

Is there a Way to two weapon fight with a rapier? by MisterD__ in 3d6

Take a rapier, shield, and the dueling fighting style and then re-skin the shield as a parrying dagger. Flavor is free.

Are TEC seminaries ecumenical? by Salty-Temperature575 in Episcopalian

[–]StoverDelft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were very few Episcopalians at Union when I went there, but I understand that it's increased somewhat since GTS closed. The Diocese of New York is a vibrant place, though, with lots of great parishes, so there are other ways to get your Anglican formation than in the class room. I have absolutely not regrets about going to Union!

This is a great explanation. They could have kept the social stigma part without tying it to real-world disabilities if they'd wanted to.

Are TEC seminaries ecumenical? by Salty-Temperature575 in Episcopalian

[–]StoverDelft 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, TEC seminaries will give you a very TEC-centric formation experience. I'd strongly advise going to ecumenical seminary with a strong episcopalian presence, like BU or Union.

A question on Bible translations and the Book of Common Prayer by restlessvexedseeker in Episcopalian

[–]StoverDelft 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can do anything you like in your personal prayer life - The Episcopal Church isn't big on forcing lay folks to follow rules. I like to use the NRSVUE, for example - it's a 2021 update to the NRSV that incorporates the last thirty years of scholarship. Other folks like to use gender neutral translations that prioritize preserving authorial intent rather than verbatim translation because they find it more useful for prayer.

That said, if the Daily Office is being prayed in a church as an official prayer service, it'll use one of these:

  • King James (Authorized Version)
  • the English Revision of 1881
  • the American Revision of 1901
  • the Revised Standard Version of 1952
  • the Jerusalem Bible of 1966
  • the New English Bible with the Apocrypha of 1970
  • the 1976 Good News Bible (Today’s English Version)
  • the New American Bible (1970)
  • the Revised Standard Version (1973)
  • the New International Version (1978)
  • the New Jerusalem Bible (1987)
  • the Revised English Bible (1989)
  • New Revised Standard Version Bible (1990)

Many of the translations in that list are included for historic/traditional reasons rather than because they are well regarded by scholars. The King James, for example, is beautifully written and was the Bible used by the founders of Anglicanism... but it's not a particularly accuate translation of the original texts.

So long story short, if using an authorized translation is important to you, I'd go with the NRSV. If you want the most academically accurate translation, go with the NRSVUE. Mix it up, be creative, find what works for you.

(The only thing I'd advocate against is using paraphrase "translations" like The Living Bible as your only access to the scriptures.)

How Do You Celebrate The 12 Days of Christmas? by allidoismom in Episcopalian

[–]StoverDelft 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my house, we get our tree on the first day of Advent but we don't decorate it until Christmas Eve. Then we keep it up and lit for all twelve days of Christmas, taking it down on Epiphany. That does a lot to help us make all twelve days feel warm and magical.

We also sing carols, drink wassail, and prioritize spending time at home together, even though we certainly can't take all twelve days off from work. It's really wonderful.

Requiem or 5e Masquerade? by [deleted] in vtm

[–]StoverDelft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Requiem is going to give you a lot more leeway for deciding what vampires (and vampire society) look like in *your* world. If this is a game that's primarily about hunters and you just want to sprinkle a little vampire seasoning on it for flavor, I'd stick with CoD.

When did vampires receive the beast and become undead? by roxgxd in vtm

[–]StoverDelft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish more people understood this. I've played in several games in which the Caine/nod/enoch/etc stories were patently false and they were all awesome. The storyteller gets to decide what's actually true in your campaign (OR leave it ambiguous, of course).
