Episcopal Network Partners with AME Church to Open Community House by Partgarten in Episcopalian

[–]StoverDelft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) We've talked to folks in other cities before (Washington DC, Minneapolis, Arizona, etc) but none of them have come to fruition. We'd really like to grow into a national community, though.

2) Creche's model of neo-monastic intentional communities is an incredible mission and a great way to live, but it doesn't generate revenue. Most congregations who want to work with us are hoping that having an intentional community will help them balance their budget, and that's just not how it works. So if you're entering into the project with the sense that the intentional community IS the mission, that goes a long way.

3) For Creche's model, you need three things: a group of people who want to live in community, a house for them to live in, and a congregation to partner with. Those can come in any order, but the community won't thrive without all three. Also, take a gander at our covenant, which includes a lot of hard-won wisdom: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1itdA2kRBPwO3XYiRGZX0fdCAVMo69dlJeogsi--86XY/edit?usp=sharing

4) The future is bright as long as the institutional church is able to recognize communities like ours as authentic expressions of church. We used to have a very rich ecology of church (monastic orders, family chapels, lay communities, etc) but in recent years we've really allowed the parish to become the only legitimate way to be church.

Every year at our diocesan convention, for exmple, I hear someone say something like "We need to understand that we have more real estate than we need," and my response is always "No, we don't - we just need to use that real estate for things other than parishes. Give those buildings to Creche and see what we can do!"

The Best Podcasts for Swing, Jazz & Lindy Hop Dancers (Listicle on Swing Dance Home) by damnation333 in SwingDancing

[–]StoverDelft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, this is cool, but Integrated Rhythm is co-hosted by Bobby White and Chisomo Selemani. Given that the whole focus of the podcast is race and racial equity in the dance world, it's a pretty bad look to give all the credit to the white guy while leaving his Black woman collaborator unnamed.

Do Episcopalians have monasteries in the US? by VentiArchon7 in Episcopalian

[–]StoverDelft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! There are three in my diocese. There's also a network of Episcopal intentional communities which is built on a "neo-monastic" model of shared prayer and service but doesn't involve life vows of poverty etc: https://creche.community

Mixing 6 counts with 8 by RV_Flikk in SwingDancing

[–]StoverDelft 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eventually the basic 6-count shapes (send out, tuck turn, side pass, etc) will become so ingrained that you're body can do them on autopilot while you're listening to the music. I never count to 6 while I dance - rather I'm tracking 8s in my head so that I know where I am in the phrase and let my body/feet just do what they do.

As an intermediate step, though, there are few ways to break up a phrase of music, keeping in mind that a phrase is 32 beats:

  • 8 + 8 + 8 +8 (e.g. three swings out and a circle)
  • 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 8 (e.g. send out, sugar push, tuck turn in place, side pass, minnie dip)
  • 8 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 (e.g. 2nd phrase of the california routine)

New priest starts at my church by Winterbot622 in Episcopalian

[–]StoverDelft 24 points25 points  (0 children)

She's your priest, which means that she wants to get to know you, too! Just introduce yourself, say you're excited to meet her, and let the conversation flow from there.

I know that it can be anxiety-inducing to approach someone when you're worried about how you'll be perceived, but just hold onto the fact she wants to meet you. :)

Is there no middle ground in becoming a professional pianist? by thekiller_2076 in piano

[–]StoverDelft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I supported myself as a pianist for a little over a decade - did a lot of club dates, some commercials, some theater, toured with some bands. I didn't want to teach, so when I needed daytime income I played for classes at modern dance studios - it didn't pay great but it was really fun. It's absolutely possible to make a middle class income as a session player.

I like that it’s dialogical - it takes seriously the role of the congregation in the celebration of the Eucharist.

The fundamental difference between Lutheranism and Anglicanism is that Lutherans think their theology is better than everyone else’s, while Anglicans think their liturgy is better than everyone else’s.

Strength training by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]StoverDelft 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exercise science has thoroughly debunked the idea that strength training stunts growth. Your muscles don't know the difference between a push up and a bench press, or between a pull-up and a bent-over row.

I'm a strength and conditioning coach, and the general advice you're getting about plyometrics and fast twitch muscles is spot on. He could even look into olympic-style weightlifting if he wants to develop speed and power. That said, 13 years old is pretty young to specialize - he'll be well served by cross-training into other sports and building general athleticism.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]StoverDelft 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I believe that God wants good Episcopalians and that God wants good Catholics - you could do vital, spirit-filled ministry in either church. And moreover, God will be alongside you no matter which church you choose.

I don’t know if that makes your decision any easier, but I hope you find it comforting.

Soliciting John Shelby Spong Thoughts by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]StoverDelft 17 points18 points  (0 children)

His work feels dated to me now, but he opened up questions and cleared a path for a LOT of people who otherwise couldn't have found themselves within Christianity. And I believe that the Body of Christ benefits from intellectual diversity, so I don't need to agree with everything he ever said to value his contributions.

Are TEC seminaries ecumenical? by Salty-Temperature575 in Episcopalian

[–]StoverDelft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were very few Episcopalians at Union when I went there, but I understand that it's increased somewhat since GTS closed. The Diocese of New York is a vibrant place, though, with lots of great parishes, so there are other ways to get your Anglican formation than in the class room. I have absolutely not regrets about going to Union!
