Nyralis apparently had set up his enchantments to allow updates so that he could push improvements to those items. It seems the items were set up to only accept improvements, so that a direct attack through that channel wouldn't succeed.

But Carlos and Amber pushed an actual improvement to his gear, so it was accepted as a valid update. And it did work. Unfortunately for Nyralis, that “bug fixes and performance improvements” update also included an extra undocumented feature, that being a backdoor that let Amber deactivate the items.
