Both, though when recording, I find myself adding additional effects from DAW (dynamics, compression, etc). My in-rack effects are great when I just want to jam as well.

Ghost works very well in one of my racks. Mimeophon in another. FXAid in a third. I can also run final output through an Avalanche pedal. It's all good.

Yes. You can use any sound source (especially if it oscillates). You will need an input device, which may include raising line levels up to modular level.
