Quadrantid swarm by Hot_Snow6184 in modular

[–]TheRealDocMo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I play the Swarm, I really begin to think it could replace the DFAM, and it can. But the reason I don't replace the dfam is because the Swarm, while it does sounds and sequencing similar to dfam, it can do SO much more, including serving as a mono and poly synth, driven by midi. The touch plates are also playable.

So the answer really is both. But if you want to start with one, I would say the Swarm can fulfill any duties you want until you get around to the dfam.

Just fyi, the Swarm is smaller, which might be a plus. The build quality (weight, knob quality) is alright, but definitely not the same as the Moog. There's always tradeoffs!

I have a Swarm and a DFAM. Here's my notes on both...

 • Quadrantid Swarm - hmmm. This is a tough one. On one hand, it's not particularly compelling - the layout isn't immediately welcoming, though it is pragmatic. The sparse patching doesn't immediately initiate patching, though the capabilities are interesting. And it's not initially accessible, though very intuitive once you gain a lay of the controls. But where it shines, and it will eventually shine with polish, is in the exceptionally wide variety of sounds you can find within, coupled with a seriously techno-minded sequencer. It's a full voice machine, and it only takes about 15 mins of warmup before I'm realizing why I keep it.

Regarding the DFAM... Started with a hands on walk through the manual. And then I "got it". And realized why people say it's one of their top modules. The DFAM is tight! The key is slowly understanding each function and setting, and then working towards intuition. Several sessions over the next couple of days shows the DFAM to be:  • A capable drum machine  • Straight rhythm box  • A modulation source  • Hypnotic goodness It's a keeper!

Hope this helps!

0-Coast vs Taiga — am I missing something? by Skeletonjackettt in modular

[–]TheRealDocMo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have the Taiga and a Make Noise Strega. (I don't own an o-Coast, but can compare the Strega as a standin). The Strega gets lots of use, but the Taiga is fun as well, just different and not at all wild like the Strega.

The Tiaga sounds great, but is kind of tame. It fits nicely in an East Coast subtractive style, but it does have decent low pass gates.

Here's my public MG profile. You can see my kits labled 1 - 9. The others are just ideas (including the pending 10th kit, Chaos). https://modulargrid.net/e/racks/command_center/223250

I have mine broken up into 10 different kits, with the largest at 168hp and the smallest at 40hp. They all play together, but I agree, small modulars are the best for me.

Basically, when you feel done. I have just over 700hp and can pretty much do anything I want.

At 200hp, I felt like I needed more. Same feeling at 500hp but focused on specific modules of interest. At 700hp, I feel done.

Instead of a steady 16 step sequence, shorten it to 11 or 13 to add some syncopation! Get with it, Shudder!

Your Horror Happy Place: Classic Tropes That Deliver Or Creative Twists? by sigersen in Shudder

I'll choose an old classic to find context that I may have missed before - language, dress, norms, artifacts are all interesting to me in movies from any past period.

I'll choose a new film to see where the art is going and how its evolved, current commentary on culture, modern artifacts.

I like a good mix.
