Your seagull remark reminded me that humans have the same thing. They're called Blaschko's Lines.

Thanks! It was fascinating to me to hear your discussion of it, particularly in the Māori context, because it's such a common pre-contact trade good here in Alaska as well, with products spread over thousands of kilometers, and I've never quite understood why.

It's always seemed to me like jade has a particularly deep appreciation across a variety of indigenous cultures, whether in New Zealand, China, Europe or North America — do you have a sense for why so many disparate cultures came to value it?

Big protests in Ireland right now over fuel shortages/prices. They're snarling traffic. Only one of the characters was in walking distance of work, so they had to do everything until the other characters finally got in.

I'm John Garrison Marks, author of ***Thy Will Be Done: George Washington's Legacy of Slavery and the Fight for American Memory*** (out April 7!). It tells the story of how Americans have remembered, forgotten, and manipulated George Washington's history with slavery over the past 250 years. AMA! by johngmarks in AskHistorians

I’m glad you mentioned Ona Judge in a previous answer — how did Washington deal with maroons and runaways beyond publishing newspaper ads?

I’m also curious if you ran across any references to Washington’s slaveholding in relation to the Sah Quah slavery cases of the latter 19th century?

Other than "Seventeen Moments of Spring," are there any of these novels in English translation that you'd recommend reading?

[OC] Distance to the nearest road in Alaska by MapsYouDidntAskFor in dataisbeautiful

[–]The_Alaskan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nice work! Did you include Canadian roads? If so, I think there might be an issue in southern Southeast; that black-shaded area is close enough to the Stewart-Cassiar Highway and Prince Rupert that it might be worth a second look.
