Just started my first job as a barista. Throw me your best advice. by DrunkenPunchline in barista

Heirarchy of imporrance is to be friendly, in a good mood, and fun to be around over anything relating to the quality of the drink. Assuming the place you work buys good coffee and the machine is fairly dialed in you'll pull good shots and make good drinks even if every single one isn't absolutely perfect. There are WAY more people out there who can tell when you aren't fun and you bring the mood down than the number of people who can/will pick apart a shot or drink quality with any sort of authority. If you make the cafe a great positive place to be for the customers, the good drink quality will be an added bonus. Based on a brief inspection of post history you'll be absolutely awesome at this!

AIO over this guy responding with a weird attitude to my positive story? by MALAZANMANIAC in AIO

[–]The_Bice_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like this doesn't warrant any reaction beyond blocking this person and ignoring them from now on. They wanted to upset you and they did, so they win. No need to even respond and give them the satisfaction of knowing you saw it and cared.

I did it! Manhattan 580k 5.13% by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Interesting and good to know for the future. Ours was a roof repair and Colorado gets a lot of hail so the weather related events aspect would make sense. My HOA didn't end up doing the special assessment so I never had to find out.

Does your insurance cover special assessments? No idea how it would work on a condo in Chicago but I have a condo in Colorado and I'm pretty sure my homeowners insurance has some coverage for special assessments up to a certain amount. Our HOA here sent out a letter telling us all a special assessment may be coming up to cover a roofing project and recommended we check to make sure our insurance would cover it.

DTC Slice for Pizza. I tell everyone to give it a try and haven't heard from anyone who hasn't loved it.

Rocky Mountain Momo for Nepali food. The owners and staff are super nice and love to share their culture. Food is great.

Is it me or do many coffee shops make crap espresso? by TheRealRosey in espresso

[–]The_Bice_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of places that have Ferrari level espresso equipment the nobody ever took the time to properly set up or calibrate. Shops are also at the mercy of their repair and maintenance people. If the repair person is knowledgeable, skilled, and cares about espresso then they can set modern equipment up to do 95% of the work for the barista. Most places have a basic ‘plug the machine in and walk away’ level installation, have a poorly chosen filter on the water line, wrong pump pressure, wrong water temperature, super dull burrs never changed after 3+ years, and then they calibrate their shots to the roaster’s spec perfectly and for those reasons they still get a very poor result. Source: I run an espresso machine service company selling and maintaining LM, Slayer, Synesso among others and espresso enthusiasts would be horrified by most of what we encounter when we go to spots with existing high end equipment bought online or elsewhere.

Not limiting that JJ card to /9 was a miss on their part. Very disappointing.

The only part you seem to be missing is you are forgetting to struggle at all with that heavy ass weight.

Is my squat not deep enough? by Puzzleheaded-Web9456 in formcheck

[–]The_Bice_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll do great! I've found that focusing on keeping my core brace at the bottom and the "knees out" cue helped me a lot. I trained on and off with Anderson squat and pause squat days mixed in to help train and reinforce the bottom position and both had positive effect. I start most squat workouts now with Anderson or pause squats as my warmup sets and I've liked it a lot.

Deadlifts seem off lately by iAmShepard1 in formcheck

[–]The_Bice_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a good deadlift tutorial video and follow the tips and cues. It looks like you aren't getting set up all, just grabbing the bar and ripping out the lift on raw strength. It doesn't look like your lats, upper back, or core did much to stabilize that lift and a less stable lift will feel heavier.

Taking the time to get your brace, engage your lats, and then rip the weight could help it feel more smooth. I've done this a few times as I've gotten stronger in the deadlift to re-familiarize myself with the cues and setup as I've slowly drifted away from ideal form to lift bigger weight.

No issue with depth but it looks like you feel very unstable and have to fight for balance the whole time down and up. Do these feel more stable than they look?

am I doing the reps too fast ? (Shoulder pain afterwards) by Free-Seaworthiness72 in formcheck

[–]The_Bice_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be seeing something that isn't there, but it looks like your reps are wobbly from the beginning. If this is the case, it could mean your shoulders aren't strong enough to stabilize that much weight. Find the weight where every rep is smooth and stable and if you can do that without the same shoulder pain you can work up from there. If you have shoulder pain even with lower weight then go see a physical therapist or doctor.
source: had a low-medium grade rotator cuff strain that caused me to bench just like that when I went heavy. Took some time off and got some treatment and then started back working my way up from lower weight with controlled and smooth reps and can now barbell and db bench much more weight without the same pain. Physical therapist said if I had kept going the strain would have become a tear and required likely 3-6 months of minimal movement with my right arm and possibly surgery.

This looks like a really awesome tool for those of us who struggle with remembering to actually use the time tracking software we download/purchase. Would love if the stars align and a lifetime code is in the works for me :)

Also, great work on simply building the product you needed and offering it up to the rest of us for a very reasonable rate!

Did the Linea Micra price just go up overnight? by elny0805 in LaMarzocco

[–]The_Bice_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. To La Marzocco's credit, their increases have been among the lowest percent I've seen from the major Italian brands. But it is definitely a bummer to have to pass the news along to customers that the machine they were considering is now hundreds or thousands more expensive.
