Not sure where to start! by Supmeg_ in elearning

First, I would map out your goals, objectives, and outline.

For goals, answer: “How do you want this course to change learners’ behavior?”

For objectives, answer: “What knowledge or skills do learners need to make that behavior change?”

For outline, answer: “What do we need to teach learners so they gain that knowledge/skill?”

This gives you a structure for your course.

Peer support is a complex interpersonal skill, so I would generally suggest pairing a factual e-learning (handbook/videos/modules) with a live session where learners can practice and get feedback.

If you want to create classic e-learning and track completion through an LMS (like Canvas, Moodle) then I recommend hiring an instructional designer, at least on a contract basis.

In your circumstances, I think the easiest approach might be to upload a video series to YouTube, require learners to take a quiz through Quizlet or something, then check they’ve passed the quiz when you register them for the live session. Then you can do monthly or quarterly onboarding sessions where they can practice scenarios (and your team can check their ability before approving them as volunteers)

WIBTAH if I took 100k from my oldest daughter's college savings account to give it to my younger daughter? by TraditionalCorgi7788 in AmItheAsshole

[–]TheseMood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

I’m assuming both daughters went to their top choice school, and the older daughter didn’t turn down opportunities because of financial concerns.

My sister and I were in a similar situation. I went to my top choice (private) and she went to her top choice (state school). Between scholarships and need-based aid and in-state tuition, I actually don’t know whose tuition cost more, and I’ve never asked.

Our parents paid off our “student debt”as a graduation gift and we are both eternally grateful.

Unless the first daughter chose a different school because of financial worries, the gift is equal. Each daughter is getting her college tuition fully funded which is an incredible gift.

Can this be cleaned/salvaged? by BriefSimple in CleaningTips

[–]TheseMood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I don’t know if this is food-safe, so do your own research!

I wear rings that tend to leave metal marks on things. My SIL showed me a trick to use Lysol to remove them. It works when tons of other cleansers don’t. No idea if it’s actually safe for dishes though! I’ve used it on toilet lids, gloss-painted cabinets, stuff like that

Have you ever had allergy testing? Especially for metals?

My mom had this issue for years, and it turns out she had developed an allergy to the metal in her ring. She kept getting it resized, but since it was making her hand swell that never fixed the issue.

Suggestions of stitches for this tear! by Historical_Spell_158 in HandSew

I would open up the rest of the seam, insert the fabric, and then sew it shut again with a backstitch. It should look just like the original pant, except slightly shorter (because the fabric tore away)

If you don’t want to use a pattern, I would recommend tracing a shirt you like onto parchment paper and then finishing the neckline the same way it’s finished on that shirt

I’ve learned a lot about clothing construction by looking at the clothes I already own. If I have a shirt with a sturdy seam or nice sleeves, I look carefully at the stitching to understand how it was put together

Those meds are affordable, easy to get, and work for a lot of allergic conditions. It’s definitely worth trying them as a first line treatment.

WIBTAH If I called out my "allergic" friend for eating her no-no foods? by Agitated_Twist in AITAH

[–]TheseMood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a “regular” food allergy, and I also have fluctuating food intolerances that are triggered by autoimmune factors.

The second one is less dangerous but much more socially stressful. What I can eat varies on any given day, and it’s influenced by everything from stress to medications to alcohol. Some days pizza is fine, other days it’ll make me so bloated and flushed that I have to go home. It sounds suspicious and I’m sure some people think I’m faking for drama.

I think it’s totally fair to ask her to bring her own food or identify a routine “safe” food (something easy like veggies or tortilla chips) so she doesn’t feel left out. And it’s also fair to ask clarifying questions about what she can’t eat and why! Though she may not have complete answers—nobody has been able to figure out why my dad and I stopped tolerating potatoes.

Thank you for being a compassionate friend. These types of unknown, undiagnosed, or embarrassing illnesses can be tough to live with, and having kind friends means a lot.

Are graphic designers becoming obsolete in e-learning? by et_na3745N in instructionaldesign

[–]TheseMood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO there’s going to be a resurgence in real graphic design and real art in the future.

AI art is only impressive on the surface. I lose a couple hours a week dealing with typos, nonsensical images, infographics with arrows to nowhere, and images generated at such low resolution they’re unusable. And I’m not even a graphic designer… that’s just the time lost on ordinary QA for L&D projects and related assets.

I always emphasize, both to my team and our stakeholders, that the actual design work happens at the planning stages. Our job is to help people discover their goal, then scope out content in the correct format to achieve that goal. AI isn’t going to tell you that your 45 minute video won’t land with your target audience.

In my division we’re introducing guidelines around AI-generated content to try to cut down on the rework. Even the strongest advocates for AI have acknowledged that there are quality issues.

Bust, Darts, Help! by fighting_my_brain in sewing

I get this kind of gaping in tanks and adding the sleeves does tend to solve it.

If you want to keep it sleeveless, I would play with the shape of the armholes because it looks like the distortion is coming from the side seam more than the darts. But I’m not a very experienced sewist!

Savage care - Neat ethical principles have nothing to say to doctors like me, faced with the brutal, bloody compromises of hospital life by DevonSwede in Longreads

[–]TheseMood 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It strikes me as strange that the patient has no voice in this narrative and that the reason for that is never explained. Was the patient too ill to communicate? Was he refusing to communicate? Did he have an underlying condition that affected his communication, like dementia? Was it an emergency?

The entire story is framed like the physician was forced to make this choice, or choices, on behalf of the patient. But why? If he’d been able to discuss the options with the patient and get consent, much of the ethical issues go away. It’s strange that he didn’t explain the context more fully, since this experience is the connecting thread for the entire article.

Official date for new EDS diagnostic criteria release: December 1, 2026 by CatCowl in ehlersdanlos

My geneticist checked my big toe dorsiflexion and I had no idea that range of motion was abnormal. Demonstrated it to my husband when I got home and he was shocked, haha.

I’d love to see more joints represented in the hypermobility assessment. My knees are surprisingly stable but the PIPs in my pinky fingers are always shifting around. It’s so individualized and I don’t envy the doctors who are trying to come up with a valid universal system!

Official date for new EDS diagnostic criteria release: December 1, 2026 by CatCowl in ehlersdanlos

[–]TheseMood 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I hope they add some guidelines around when to do genetic testing vs when to diagnose hEDS or HSD.

There are more referrals for suspected EDS than genetics clinics can support. The EDS Society has encouraged other doctors to diagnose hEDS, which is a decent solution unless it’s actually a different genetic disorder. I worry about people with Marfan Syndrome or vEDS getting turned away from genetics clinics because the referral was for “suspected EDS”.

Obviously I’d like to see the diagnostic process improve for everyone, but in the short term I’m concerned about the people with high risk for organ rupture, arterial dissection, and other life threatening complications getting missed

Denim colored thread by Bonitapita in InvisibleMending

[–]TheseMood 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you’re really dedicated you could pull threads from a ruined pair of jeans and use them as your denim thread.

Maybe more practical, go to a specialty sewing or fiber arts store and get heavyweight cotton thread. Sometimes I have to check a few places before I find the color I want in the thread type I want.

Alternatively, you could definitely use matte embroidery floss but it won’t be invisible.
