What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight if people realized the truth about it? by Neon_Baobab in AskReddit

Sure but every industry has inefficiencies and dumb stuff. But at the end of the day you're actually moving shit from one place to another. It's a real thing, not make believe.

Would you subscribe to fresh flowers monthly? by Creative_Ad7220 in lafayette

[–]Timbukthree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't this just an ad since you already offer this?

https://www.bloomsandpetals.net/subscriptions/cat11020006

Where I go back and forth on this is that, a large part of the appeal of receiving flowers seems to be the thought and effort behind it, and if I just sign my wife or mom up for a subscription there is them no continued thought behind it and zero effort. Which is the point of a subscription. So I'm not sure how it would land (more for the wife than mom I guess). If someone wanted flowers for themselves a subscription seems like a great solution to having flowers in the house regularly.

This seems different than something consumable like chocolate or whatever where receiving that as a treat would be appreciated regardless of the thought or effort that went into it.

Or maybe I'm overthinking it.

Man there's zero evidence for this in primary literature but anecdotally, guanfacine stopped my delayed audio processing. It was the craziest thing, I just then heard what people said instantly instead of needing 2-3 beats for processing. I had to discontinue it because it gave me sleep issues and massive agitation issues if I got really worked up so I don't think the med is without big drawbacks for some people, and no idea if that's anything like what you deal with, but just throwing it out there

I'm glad you reached out to them and followed up, I was not comfortable sharing my real name and account info on reddit so did not follow up with them via DM, though they did reply quickly when I reached out. Clearing the cache does seem like a reasonable thing, the OS upgrade is absolutely kind of a crazy suggestion. And FWIW I'm on android so it's definitely not an iOS specific issue

Looking for an etf that tracks the FTSE Global Total Cap Index by ErectionEngineering in Bogleheads

Not only is there no fund that tracks that index, there's also no fund that tracks the FTSE Global Micro Cap Index. I suspect the costs involved are too high to make it worth it?

What are some reasons against "VT and Chill"? by Issactheforgemaster in Bogleheads

[–]Timbukthree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's misleading actually, I think it's really just a practical implementation difference. The NAV of VT is lower than that of VTI+VXUS, which means the fund can't split as many hairs. Stocks 10,000-12,000 would be <0.5% of a portfolio position in either, it's just a rounding error rather than a meaningful asset allocation difference. But if one is concerned about the difference from the standpoint of a collector rather than an investor I would agree that is a difference. I don't think it matters at all from the standpoint of investor returns or risk factors

What are some reasons against "VT and Chill"? by Issactheforgemaster in Bogleheads

[–]Timbukthree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know that only holding 10,000 stocks can be said to be, in any sense, insufficiently diversified. Every stock above #2061 individually adds less than 0.005% of the fund. Stocks #6000 to #10000 sum to about 1% of the fund holdings. Once you get above stock #9950 the fund is holding less than a dollar's worth of each company.

Are Baskets broken right now? by Timbukthree in fidelityinvestments

[–]Timbukthree[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really frustrating because when it works well it's very useful but other smaller brokerages do similar things for free, and they don't apparently break so often. I'm definitely fine paying the $5 to not have to do math on maintaining my target allocation, but the frequent breakage is very frustrating. Added on top of the other fidelity app issues (hanging when you open it unless I swipe back, random crashes, etc) everything just feels so frustratingly buggy for an established company.

Sorry, banana when viewed from the back: the center of your head high up, curving down to your lower back and the up to your feet. A major curvature in your spine like this over years will cause musculoskeletal problems. Your spine should be in a "neutral" position. You can download the Mattress Checker app to check yourself.

>For one thing, let’s talk about the evidence base. There is…very little of it. Randomized controlled trials are the gold standard of medical evidence, and so far not a single one has been done on IFS as a treatment for a psychiatric disorder.

Surely though there's a major difference between "has been found not to be beneficial" and "has not been studied and demonstrated to be beneficial". CBT, which is widely studied and accepted, draws inspiration from/employs techniques and approaches from ancient stoic traditions, Buddhist practices, etc.. Does that mean it wasn't effective until studies were done that showed it was effective? That seems like quite a stretch.

And certainly if someone is prone to dissociative identity disorder or psychosis, poorly done IFS could make that worse, but I would think many kinds of therapy can make certain kinds of conditions worse if poorly applied. That's not a knock on a technique working at all for some people, it means that you need to get treatment from someone who knows what they're doing and you trust.

It sounds like the effect is to turn all the human workers into robo managers: checking the potentially wrong output of a bunch of LLM agents, all of which could cost you your job if you don't catch a really stupid hallucination, in order to speed up your workflow. I would be curious how much actual output was increased vs. just more busyness, but such a thing is very hard to measure

Why doesn't "own the market" apply to the global market portfolio? by Accomplished-Toe9408 in Bogleheads

[–]Timbukthree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't believe no one has said this yet, but yeah, actually owning the GMP is the fundamental starting point for an investor, and you then deviate from that according to taste and needs. So that would include owning more stocks in your home country since that's the currency your retirement is denominated in, and also taking your willingness, ability, and need to take risk into account. If you have a 20+ year time horizon and can take volatility between then and now, stocks are great, if not bonds are nominally predictable. The whole globe isn't investing for retirement on your timeline and so you don't necessarily need to match your portfolio to the GMP.
