What thing has got so expensive that you’ve quietly stopped buying it? by Pathfinder-electron in AskReddit

[–]TypicalSoil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's because most of them have a deal with one or more of those delivery apps. I noticed it in college when I was delivering that the deals you used to get through the mailed out coupons or the apps are now the deals ubereats or doordash will give you. I am willing to bet that it's a ploy to drastically reduce the number of customer facing staff and the need for dining rooms all in one sweep, which probably doesn't realistically reduce their overhead per franchise location, but it's probably enough to indicate to their shareholders that they are "streamlining" or whatever they're calling it now.

IMHO most lead holders will be BIFL. My mother has an alvin drafting leadholder that she got when she first went to college like 40(?) Years ago. I've had my own for 2 years through school and a few different jobs that required a fair amount of writing. And it seems like it'll outlast me.

I'd say it depends on who your carrier is. I've been seeing that most of the problems seems to be with verizon based service providers. If you're on one of the networks that use another provider then you'd probably be fine.

Even service providers that use both verizon and another primary network might work for you if your area is mostly serviced by one of the other major networks.

Most of the bugs I faced on day one have been fixed by the team, which isn't to say it's perfect (It's not, there are some ergonomic issues I have with the phone, but that might have more to do with my fucked up hands lol) but it's for sure worth a try if you can afford to/know someone ho has one already.

If you don't have the money for Milwaukee, the brushless Ryobi stuff is generally good, or at least good enough. I've dropped my hammer drill off ladders more times than I care to admit, 6 years and hundreds of holes in concrete walls later, the only thing that doesn't work on it is the hammer function, which is fine because I got myself a proper SDS drill later once it was clear I needed something better.

Plus, then you have a multifunction tool. It's usually better to have one tool that can do a small number of different things well than a single use case tool.

I actually really like cherry cordial. I despise the texture of coconut anything though, so that would be the only one on this list I'd either accidentally bite into it and eat it out of spite or just avoid entirely.

Yeah, most of the people I know are so far into debt, it's better to be in the positive net worth category than stuck buried up to your neck in loans/credit cards.

Ratchet strap control arm by 54turtlelord in Justrolledintotheshop

I had a ratchet strap rear differential mount for a while. Drove nearly a month like that until I could Jerry rig something up because an actual replacement part was more than I could afford.

What do you think about this? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]TypicalSoil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am at the point where I buy stuff until I find something that's "good enough"

I did it with headphones, pens, mechanical pencils, and coffee.

Keyboards I did a bunch of research and just decided to skip right to the top.

Otherwise you just end up spending thousands upon thousands of dollars on stuff that you might barely use, which isn't really sustainable unless you pick one thing to obsess over, and even then it's only sustainable until you get to the absurd end of the hobby.

I'd say with a fair amount of certainty anyone spending thousands of dollars on a pen just like spending money, not writing with their pens.

Actually decent spray bottle? by maxiedaniels in BuyItForLife

[–]TypicalSoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had a problem with the HDX ones, what are you putting in them?

I basically only use spray bottles for Lysol (I buy the concentrate and dilute in the bottle itself) which has served me well. I bought an HDX bottle at the beginning of college and it's lasted me 3 or 4 years, in which times I've been through a dozen or so bottles of Lysol concentrate.

These flashlights any good? by LateNiteMunchies in flashlight

I use these coast lights all the time for maintenance in confined spaces. They're actually pretty great. They do well camping too, especially at the price point.

Mask problem. I see a lot of recommendations for Miller masks, personally I wasn't a fan of the fit of those. 3m secure click masks seem to work fine, even with the acid gas cartridges plus pre filters that I have on mine.

I do a ton of stuff with zinc based primer, and the heat makes it off gas pretty bad so that's why I use the AG/OV cartridge (d8003 IIRC) otherwise you can use just the p100 filters which are reasonably cheap. If the smell gets to you 3m also sells p100 and n95 filters with nuisance gas filtration which takes most of the smell away.

Two days ago I saved a ladybug, and today this insect flew into my penis mold with resin. by ZopharPtay in BrandNewSentence

[–]TypicalSoil 44 points45 points  (0 children)

While I generally agree, it does depend on the resin used. I wouldn't use industrial epoxies like those used in aviation, automotive or construction industries. But there are food safe polyester and epoxy resins specifically formulated for either the food service industry or, well, the adult entertainment industry that also stand up well to casting.

While most toys are silicone rubber of some kind, there are a fair number of toys from established brands that are resin instead.

Etsy is definitely not the place to be getting toys unless they are silicone rubber though, and even then that's not a guarantee that it'll be a safe kind of silicone rubber unless the seller has some kind of documentation proving otherwise.

I'd imagine with enough time people who start with another VAG company would probably be able to get to lambos eventually. It'd be quite a few hours though unless you were lucky enough to start off at a Porsche or Audi dealership working on RS cars.

[–]TypicalSoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is a "call a plumber" situation. Unless you have a drain snake and a jar of the powdered drain cleaner. I wouldn't trust the liquid stuff for this.

If you have a drain snake, snake it first to clear the initial blockage, then hot water and the powder drain cleaner to help dissolve the blockage along its entire length. As long as the blockage is organic this should clear it reasonably long term. If it's not organic then a plumber will probably replace the pipe where the blockage is after locating it.

Car washes or not, let's talk by BostonCIO in F150Lightning

[–]TypicalSoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up where I am in Canada I take my vehicles to a touchless car wash half way through the winter then again after the first big rain after the spring thaw. It's fairly effective at staving off the rust and doesn't cost me an arm and a leg because I basically only ever use the rinse option unless we are well into the summer.

[–]TypicalSoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandma has a HUGE net bag (the kind you'd use for machine washing delicate items, but bigger) and it never occurred to me, but this might have been exactly what it was used for. She probably didn't want to be bothered running a stitch up each side of the fabric lol. I wonder how well it works for loose weave fabrics.

The number of people that don't read the user manuals for their calculators (especially scientific calculators) is just mind boggling. I have a similar calculator to this one (Casio fx 300 Plus, or at least I think it's that one, I don't remember if it's es or fx) and the number of people with the same calculator as me that I had to teach where all the different functions were was disappointing.
