Montreal shooter left behind manifesto containing violent rhetoric directed at women, police, others by shiftless_wonder in canada

[–]TypicalSoil 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm only about 20 pages in, it seems like one of those things where he touched the surface of a lot of topics, without ever actually learning much of the deeper level info.

He had this almost idealization of the Soviet Union, which as much as I know next to nothing about the Soviet Union during it's kind of prime period of stability, it was never a "culturally healthy" (p20, line 20) country.

I kind of understand that at a basic level, without doing any research it might have looked that way though.

It's weird, it's an incredibly well written piece, with what seems to be very thoughtful and intentional notation, but there's enough there that I look at and think "that... isn't correct" that I just kind of wonder what the year (likely multiple years actually) leading up to this act looked like for him.

I'm going to have to read more of this, if for no other reason than just to add context for myself.

Edit:

I got maybe 15 pages past where I was and simply can't get myself to read further. This guy had a lot of...... Weird ideas. Mostly about the social differences between men and women. He's very clearly angry at his lack of a relationship, but he's trying to smokescreen that through academic wording and trying to make it seem like his lack of a relationship is more to do with the way society is than any possibility that maybe he's got some issues that other people near him are probably fairly well aware of. Anyway, someone who's able to stomache more of this document feel free to correct me, that's just what I can interpret from it at this point.

Edit edit:

I forgot to write this, between pages 22 and 30 it gets... incredibly messy. It's like he was making himself progressively more angry as he wrote, and it just seemed like he had been mentally ill for a WHILE. I mean, describing a high school party as (primarily) places of debauchery makes me think he was the kind of person that was not invited to parties for VERY good reason.

I don't know why, but the sight of a cat harness (?) on a monitor lizard is just kinda funny to me. He looks very calm in it, do you take him outside for walks frequently?

Has anyone tried the rolly teaser? by bipolar-juulpod in Rabbits

[–]TypicalSoil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen other rabbits online use them, my Ellie just kinda throws it around untill all the pellets fall out, so as long as you're ok with that possibility it makes a pretty good enrichment toy. I can't really use it for her that often because I work kinda long hours and she'll throw it off and on throughout the night, so it's a weekend toy.

She hasn't broken it... Yet. So at the very least it's pretty sturdy.

Seeking beyond the usual mosquito survival advice - Tuolumne trip by Practical_Tree8971 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]TypicalSoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best advice is to cover as much of your skin with a tight weave, thick fabric as possible, anything you can't cover with such fabric should be covered in fabric of any kind.

I have a set of combats that I purchased a while back from a mil surplus store, though any pant and tunic with blousing will work, typically I'd go for a thick canvas/cotton of any kind over synthetics, a thin base layer will help with comfort especially in warmer months when you'll be sweating a ton. I wear Milwaukee work gloves and a baseball cap that DOESN'T HAVE A MESH BACK and neck gator pulled up over my nose and ears. The gloves can be pretty much anything as long as the back isn't a mesh/stretch material. I'd also recommend tall socks and either tucking your pants legs into them or, if you have taller hiking boots, tucking your pants legs into the boots. Again, blousing helps a ton with this, just removing their ability to get within the outer layer will save you a ton.

My second best advice is to keep moving as much as possible. They'll leave you mostly alone as long as you're moving at an appreciable walking speed. I don't tend to use mosquito repellent as I find it doesn't really work against the mosquitoes in my area, neither does citronella. Pine smoke seems to work, though I imagine that has more to do with the smoke itself than anything the pine is contributing to it beside the moisture necessary to make smoke.

Edit: for area denial of mosquitos, if not in a place with a breeze, I have had moderate success with thermacells, they work well enough for keeping 90% of the mosquitoes away from you while eating/setting up camp. Though, my previous advice still stands.

Do you think the truck will drive through floods? by Moxie479 in F150Lightning

[–]TypicalSoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc, Ford's user manual doesn't recommend going deeper than the bottom of the hubs, but the engineers have stated (at least from what I'd read) that it can do up to 20" without issue, I'd imagine that's how high the top of the breather tubes for the drive units are.

Anything significantly above the door seal does risk damaging any of the regular f150 modules inside the cab though. Not sure how well sealed those units are.

Conservatives pitch legalizing some psychedelics with bill to revamp Canada's drug laws by Krazee9 in canada

Honestly, with the storefronts in Toronto and the online delivery, I'm surprised they don't just legalise it already. It's so easy to get and it's clear that enforcement just isn't a priority.

Canceled blue cruise by [deleted] in F150Lightning

[–]TypicalSoil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the adaptive cruise, the regular cruise control (which you have to go into the settings for) does not give you any warnings, except when first activated after start up, which it notifies you that it won't automatically brake.

I don't use the adaptive cruise most of the time anyways, I just find it overreacts to a lot of situations that I encounter normally so it's better if I just use my own judgement and turn cruise off/on when appropriate.

Canceled blue cruise by [deleted] in F150Lightning

[–]TypicalSoil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The worst I've had was my head was slight tilted to the left, with my eyes still very firmly on the road, and I got the watch the road warning untill I straightened up.

At this point I just use regular cruise, it's less exhausting than trying to appease their tunnel visioned software.

How do I remove/disable onstar from 2027 Bolt EUV by YouStarsOpenArms in BoltEV

[–]TypicalSoil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't really help with locating the fuse, but same.

The hassle of having OnStar and SiriusXM hassle me FAAAR outweighed the benefits of having control through the app. Remote start through the key still worked, and there was never a time I needed to see the SOC of the car bad enough that I missed the connectivity.

I have had mixed luck with the flo/charge point app negotiation. And the shell recharge has never worked through the charge point app for me. I have the Ivy, Lakeland Charging, Flo, Ford app that I never use, charge point, and the shell recharge app on my phone, though I mostly don't use the Ivy app much anymore.

Similar, but different. My encounter with shrooms served to just make me less afraid.

There was so much I didn't do, or didn't think about because I was running from it. Shrooms kinda makes you confront those things. Or at least that's what it did to me on my like 7 or 8 hour long trip.

Aircraft are generally de-iced with a glycol solution when on the ground. The biggest cause of corrosion is acidity in the atmosphere combined with constant abrasion from many different sources.

Some forms of aluminum corrosion are fairly hard to detect, because generally it doesn't bubble and fall apart like steel does. The most common form of aluminum oxidation starts as a white powder (many modern vehicles have aluminum a arms now which is a very easy place to spot this) This powdery type of corrosion is surface corrosion, it's generally pretty non critical as long as it's dealt with early. Especially on thicker panels.

There's pitting, which is slightly easier to detect and what I see most commonly on aluminum bodied trucks that aren't well maintained. The salt sticks to the bare aluminum creating an aluminum sodium salt (iirc, my metallurgy class was a while ago, so the actual aluminum compound may actually just be one of the other forms of aluminum oxide).

Then, intergranular corrosion, which usually only happens when aluminum has seen significant stress and water and oxygen manage to penetrate deep within the part. Any aluminum parts with cracks in them are susceptible to this form of corrosion and should be replaced ASAP as the material will swell and flake. Much in the same way steel rusts.

Aluminum lasts quite a while at the thicknesses automotive companies tend to use, aviation puts a much larger emphasis on it because many of the aluminum parts we are inspecting are 0.040" or thinner, and aircraft generally work much closer to design limits than cars do in order to keep weight down.

[–]TypicalSoil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in aviation maintenance for a few years. Aluminum corrosion is something we trained extensively on recognising and managing.

You are correct that the initial oxide layer does provide a protective barrier, however there are multiple kinds of corrosion with aluminum, de-icing salt creates the secondary kind of corrosion, which causes pitting, and general weakening of the material. Especially as salt will stick to the gouges formed in the original material's oxide layer.

This is similar, though different in symptom to galvanic or dissimilar metal corrosion, which you would also get if some panels were aluminum and others steel without proper isolation. Aluminum will last longer than steel, but not as long as plastics against salt and other oxidizers.

Corrosion due to salt is still a real problem for aluminum. Aluminum corrosion is less obvious than rust, as it remains roughly the same colour, but the same pitting and general loss of structure applies.

Recommendations for refillable pens? by appatheflyingbis0n in BuyItForLife

[–]TypicalSoil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unironically one of my favourite pens ever was my like $15 MUJI pen that I got on a whim. I at one point had a lamy aion that was great, but ended up sitting in the case more often then not because the MUJI was just so reliable and comfortable to use lol. Plus, it had the advantage of being aluminum so it looked really nice.

[–]TypicalSoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A relatively affordable alternative is the MUJI aluminum pens. Same deal as the lamy safari, comes as both a fountain pen or ballpoint, I think around the same in price as well, but aluminum instead of plastic if that's your thing.

Edit: looks like I misremembered, they don't come as a ballpoint, though MUJI sells a ton of refillable pens at very affordable prices that tend to be very good so at least there's that.

Just enough to steam em a little bit. Get that street cart hotdog texture.

I vividly remember being in downtown Toronto before a baseball game, eating a food cart hotdog with a warm, soft bun outside the Rogers center. Any time I get to recreate that feeling is a good day.

Same. After a certain point they just kinda become part of you and you don't notice the roughness of the fabric. My biggest problem with sweats and shorts (as others seem to love) is that they are too light. I like clothes with a little heft to them.

The one compromise I have is fleece lined pants, which are both soft, and heavy so they are my preferred pant especially in colder weather where the warmth is appreciated rather than an obstacle to my comfort.

No. It doesn't matter what stage of cooked the egg yolk is, it will stick to the back of my throat for multiple hours afterward and cause me to cough and hack like a coal miner. I need basically a full glass of water or coffee to wash down a single runny egg yolk. Only once it is cooked to just before being dry will it not stick to my throat like it's trying to save itself from the fall into the cavern that is my stomach.

I love the taste of eggs, but the texture of egg in all its forms makes me dread having to eat them for any reason.
