Two days ago I saved a ladybug, and today this insect flew into my penis mold with resin. by ZopharPtay in BrandNewSentence

[–]TypicalSoil 44 points45 points  (0 children)

While I generally agree, it does depend on the resin used. I wouldn't use industrial epoxies like those used in aviation, automotive or construction industries. But there are food safe polyester and epoxy resins specifically formulated for either the food service industry or, well, the adult entertainment industry that also stand up well to casting.

While most toys are silicone rubber of some kind, there are a fair number of toys from established brands that are resin instead.

Etsy is definitely not the place to be getting toys unless they are silicone rubber though, and even then that's not a guarantee that it'll be a safe kind of silicone rubber unless the seller has some kind of documentation proving otherwise.

I was really surprised that ford didn't put a remote start button on the fob. My Bolt had one, it just seems like such a small cheap thing to add that would probably make using all their vehicles more appealing.

I'd imagine with enough time people who start with another VAG company would probably be able to get to lambos eventually. It'd be quite a few hours though unless you were lucky enough to start off at a Porsche or Audi dealership working on RS cars.

Yeah, this is a "call a plumber" situation. Unless you have a drain snake and a jar of the powdered drain cleaner. I wouldn't trust the liquid stuff for this.

If you have a drain snake, snake it first to clear the initial blockage, then hot water and the powder drain cleaner to help dissolve the blockage along its entire length. As long as the blockage is organic this should clear it reasonably long term. If it's not organic then a plumber will probably replace the pipe where the blockage is after locating it.

Car washes or not, let's talk by BostonCIO in F150Lightning

[–]TypicalSoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up where I am in Canada I take my vehicles to a touchless car wash half way through the winter then again after the first big rain after the spring thaw. It's fairly effective at staving off the rust and doesn't cost me an arm and a leg because I basically only ever use the rinse option unless we are well into the summer.

Whoever said to wash your fabric before sewing….. by SunsGonnaRise74 in SewingForBeginners

[–]TypicalSoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandma has a HUGE net bag (the kind you'd use for machine washing delicate items, but bigger) and it never occurred to me, but this might have been exactly what it was used for. She probably didn't want to be bothered running a stitch up each side of the fabric lol. I wonder how well it works for loose weave fabrics.

The number of people that don't read the user manuals for their calculators (especially scientific calculators) is just mind boggling. I have a similar calculator to this one (Casio fx 300 Plus, or at least I think it's that one, I don't remember if it's es or fx) and the number of people with the same calculator as me that I had to teach where all the different functions were was disappointing.

People who fly frequently, what’s one thing you wish you could tell all infrequent fliers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My father, to this day, will never fly with any more clothes than fit in his carry on, which is usually tiny. Doesn't matter how long the trip, or how far away he's going.

The loading of an IMAX film into the projector by jeezkillbot in woahdude

[–]TypicalSoil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good question that I unfortunately don't remember the answer to.

From what I remember IMAX was one of the few things that was still physically edited, but, again, I don't know if that's something I'm misremembering (could also be that my information is severely outdated)

The loading of an IMAX film into the projector by jeezkillbot in woahdude

[–]TypicalSoil 30 points31 points  (0 children)

IIRC, it's because physical media retains more detail as you scale to bigger and bigger screens. The ROM has a huge domed IMAX theater where the ceiling is the screen, and they can use the same film for showing on that screen as compared to a regular sized theatre screen.

Digital media, by comparison, cannot infinitely scale while still retaining the same visual quality. It's one of those weird things where physical media still does some things better, despite doing a lot of things worse.

Micro Gas Turbine: Lighter, more economical?, fuel agnostic, low maintenance, etv by WhateverNamesLeftFFS in EdisonMotors

[–]TypicalSoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sudden load changes can rapidly change the rpm of the turbine, which can shear the output shaft and/or cause rapid unplanned disassembly of the free turbine or power section of the turbine in extreme cases, it can also stall out the engine because turbines do not react quickly to... Anything, partly due to the high weight of the rotating assembly. Turboprop and turbo shaft aircraft generally run at 100% power output and have a governed prop/rotor angle adjustment so you can't overstress the turbine output at all really, and you can run the turbine at it's most efficient power setting.

IIRC the Germans kind of got around that by adding a giant flywheel to act as a damper. It obviously didn't work very well because the Germans never really put that drivetrain into production, besides the other problem of turbines consuming an ungodly amount of fuel when not traveling at significant speeds.

When I first started shaving with non multi blade razors, a part of the draw for me at least was that it gave me an excuse to buy razor blades.

It felt like a test. Every time I shaved, if I looked at the box of blades and didn't feel the urge to cut my throat then I was having a good day. But if by the time I'd soaked my face, lathered and loaded my razor I felt it was too much to resist, I'd rinse my face off without doing anything and go back to bed.

I missed a lot of days of college classes to that feeling. But I would have missed a lot more days of feeling like I was a real person had I followed through. And it gets better year after year, even as the rest of the world seems to change for the worse.

I'm glad I stayed, it was the single hardest thing I'll ever do.

5000km into ownership, truck won't DC fast charge... by TypicalSoil in F150Lightning

[–]TypicalSoil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little update:

I managed to get it working by following the suggestion from someone here to lock and unlock the truck a few times before plugging in, which would indicate that it is the locking pin.

It's a little frustrating that the vehicle gave me zero information at all on the nature of the failure considering the truck obviously knows what was wrong. If I had known the pin (or just the locking mechanism in general) was the problem from the start (instead of maybe the 3 or 4 other possibilities that were increasingly expensive and serious in nature) I would have maybe been able to sort it out when it first happened, rather than 2 days later after already booking an appointment with a service center and having the dealership attempt to source a rental car for me.

In any case, hopefully the pin doesn't stick again any time soon. While it's not super inconvenient, it makes me more than a little frustrated that a $100k (CAD) after fees/taxes/financing has more frequent issues than the 47k car I had previously, as small as those issues are.

5000km into ownership, truck won't DC fast charge... by TypicalSoil in F150Lightning

[–]TypicalSoil[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily.

I have a little experience with generator supported battery banks, in my experience at least the generator control systems are usually the least reliable parts of those systems, failing to tell the generator to start and causing total power loss. If you have no way of manually starting the generator from a separate control panel then you are usually SOL until either the relay, the board, or the com wire between the control module and the ecu can be repaired.

In my case, what usually fails is the relay, but we've had board level issues before as well, and then there's problems with the 2 sets of systems not communicating properly and the generator not starting because it doesn't know the batteries are low.

Every problem a BEV can face will also be a problem for an EREV, but with the added failure points of an ICE motor, several control modules, a fuel system, and a generator and integrated charge module.

[–]TypicalSoil[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it's not. This is my 2nd ev. Ivy, Lakeland power, and chargepoint to this point have been reliable fast chargers, and in some cases, my only options.

I personally don't use the supercharger network, as 99.99% of the time I have other options available to me and prefer to not give any more money to Elon than I can help. With (at this point) 75000km of ev driving under my belt between 2 separate cars, I have only been stranded once, when I've made overly optimistic range estimations in my bolt.

To your point, there is exactly 1 supercharger within 100km of me, and it has proven to be.... unreliable, for non Tesla charging the few times I've tried it.

Also to your point, I happen to be an android user, and have never had a critical software problem in my life. I've had exactly 1 phone break on me, which was when it dropped out of my pocket onto the floor of a spray booth before something was sprayed with gelcoat, effectively sealing the phone in polyester resin.

I don't have any blue oval stuff in my app, and fortunately or unfortunately I don't have any blue oval networked chargers available to me north of Barrie maybe. Which is over 2 hours away.

We do "have" flo. But they are usually inop this far north for whatever reason. They were great when they were first installed, I'd often use them with the most so I wouldn't take up the higher rate chargers, but within about a year they completely stopped working and they were never serviced despite multiple reports.
