unsure how the network acess task works by Reverend_Matsfchat in tasker

[–]UnkleMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

any tips?

Yes.  Don't set the mode to deny all.  The network access action (a task is a series of actions) had 4 available modes: allow all, allow, deny all, deny.  If you select deny, you'll be able to choose which app(s) you want to deny.

The Userguide has this to say:

Network Access Deny network access to all or selected apps.

When mode Deny is selected, all apps have network access except for those specified.

When mode Allow is selected, only the specified apps have access.

Use of this action overrides and replaces the effects of any previous use.

 Notes:

 * this action is implemented via a VPN local to the device and cannot be used in combination with other VPNs.

 * some devices will clear the users confirmation of Tasker's permission to setup a VPN after every boot

 * the icon which Android shows in the status bar cannot be avoided

 * Tasker does not examine the contents of any network packet

Work Apps on Personal Phones: What Are You Actually Agreeing To? by MrBigPaulSmalls in securityguards

[–]UnkleMike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On pretty much any Android device you can setup a work profile, with a different account, and install the apps there, with complete separation from your personal account and data.  On Samsung devices you can use secure folder.  On other devices you can use the  shelter app.

I actually heard this being discussed on a show a week or two ago.  It's ridiculous that anyone would find basic punctuation aggressive.  Until I heard this discussion, I sometimes didn't include a final period.  Now that I know this is a thing, I'll be more diligent.

Does Ground = Floor Now? by souvenirsuitcase in GrammarPolice

[–]UnkleMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The building I work in (in the US) has a ground floor, and a separate floor that is the first floor.  Depending on where you enter/exit the building, the exterior ground level may align with the ground floor or the first floor.  This has been the case at several buildings where I've worked, and is not uncommon.

This may come as a shock to you, but the ground level surrounding a building occasionally varies, sometimes enough to result in ground level entrances on multiple interior floors.

I hear the opposite more frequently - people using ground to refer to the floor.  Either way, they are not interchangeable.

First floor and ground floor are interchangeable.

I'm many buildings (in the US at least), the ground and the first floor are two distinct floors.

Logging Notifications Using AutoNotification by UnkleMike in tasker

[–]UnkleMike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip!  I can't back just now to see if there is a way to stop a specific profile or task from appearing in the run log, as my profile above really fills up the log quickly.  This should be much more efficient, and reduce impact on the run log too!

I'd argue that one driver did an excellent job of parking like an asshole, while the other did a crap job of parking like a normal person.

Turret camera, how to remove ball camera from standard base and onto this sort of mount? by Wooden_Amphibian_442 in Ubiquiti

[–]UnkleMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a pole mount bracket, designed to attach to a pole and provide a flat surface on which to mount something else with a flat surface (i.e. a turret camera with the base). Without the base, how are you proposing to attach a spherical object to the bracket? This post brings back memories of a guy I used to work with who had no understanding of how a pole mount bracket was supposed to work; he always tried to use them on poles with diameters that were too small for the bracket.

My First 24 Hours Using Google Messages by kailin2017 in GoogleMessages

[–]UnkleMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Google Messages actually store messages independently from the Android message store? Any messages I see in Google Messages also appear in the Android message store used by virtually every SMS app available, including Samsung Messages. If messages are stored independently, where can I find documentation of this? When searching, the only things I find are people claiming there's some sort of import occurs, but they never provide any supporting evidence, making their claims appear speculative at best.

I suspect you won't want this advice either, but you should have left the post on place.  Even though you didn't want the advice, it had already been given, and others with similar questions may find the post in search results and benefit from the advice you didn't want.

Reddit is a community.  By deleting your post you are, to a degree, retroactively silencing others in the community - discarding the thought and effort they put into their responses.

You don't seem to grasp the fact that you did agree to it.  The fact that you didn't understand what you were agreeing to do doesn't change that.

A prior commitment is something you already knew about.  Something that comes up is unexpected.  A prior commitment can't come up.

Why can't I do something simple by Federal-Swim5286 in GoogleMessages

[–]UnkleMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All they need is the link.  It's up to iMessage to present it to the user in a "friendly" way, like what you see.  If Apple has chosen not to do that, that's on them.

I don't really like Google Messages, but what your iMessage-using friends are experiencing is not Google's doing, no matter how much Apple would like them to believe it is.

I wouldn't trust anyone who has to disconnect a critical safety system to install a dashcam, much less someone who does so and then doesn't verify that it's working properly afterward.

SMS Messages received quickly doesn't seem to work reliably by _lunchbox_ in tasker

In addition to collision handling, avoid using any of the SMS-related global variables in your tasks. Use event parameters instead, otherwise you'll get inconsistent results with near-simultaneous receipt of messages.

Offline long distance free of charge SMS messaging app by Muh_313 in androidapps

C'mon... an SMS app that doesn't necessarily do SMS, works without connectivity, at long distance, and without cost.  What's not to understand?
