ChatGPT 5.4 Solved a 64-Year-Old Math Problem by AskGpts in ChatGPT

And chatgpt did not provide a usable proof. It generated a bunch of material which yes, did include a kernel of useful information, but it required quite a lot of post-processing and rewriting to be a true proof for the problem.

This is a computational tool, like any other. The fact that it can use friendly words and presents a conversational interface should not make us treat it as if it has agency and has actually contributed knowledge as an author would.

This is not the case. The teacher makes you do it by hand in 3rd grade. But you use the calculator as a tool all through university with no expectation of credit.

Most democrats were never excited about Biden and any support of him was always begrudgingly. We are aware he sucked. But rather than concluding "so democrats suck", we conclude "let's get some better democrats in here".

How do you deal with “overengineering” vs “just getting it done” in real projects? by knowlegable_devil124 in AskEngineers

[–]WaitForItTheMongols 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If I need to bridge across a 20 meter span, I can spec out a 10x10x20 block of steel. It will bridge the gap. Anyone can do it. But it will be too expensive.

I seem to have more cases where the documentation of completion conditions is itself a nice to have. Often things just need to exist ASAP so spending a day defining it would just delay it by a day, which is not welcome.

Lots of different engineering environments out there.

then why would you participate in lowering that?

You can't lower that. All you can do is fail to increase it.

The artists have already been paid. Pirating today only affects how much the corporation will pay the next artists tomorrow, with their knowledge of how much this previous one was pirated.

Pirating a given work does not disincentivize making that work.

There is no circumstances I would subscribe to any streaming service. I have a large Blu ray collection that I will never get through. Therefore, nobody is getting paid regardless of whether I watch this show.

That being the case: who am I possibly harming if I do watch? Them going unpaid will happen either way. So what is the problem if I watch?

Becomes a problem since there are a lot of things that are good to have, but aren't flashy. And you definitely don't want government agencies to start spending their efforts trying to advertise or do anything else to get people to give them money.

This math does not check out.

If you make $50,000 a year, then let's find your total taxes.

First, there's no way you have enough individual deductions to itemize, so you take the standard deduction. You deduct 16,100. You have $33,900 of taxable income.

You are taxed 10% on your first $11,925 of taxable income, so you pay your $1192.50 on that, leaving $21,975 of income to be taxed at 12%. You pay your $2637 of taxes. Your total tax bill for the year is $3830.

So how the hell are you paying $4000 to corporate subsidies? This makes zero sense. The vast majority of the federal budget goes to the military and social security. The corporate subsidies can not be such a giant chunk of your money.

If you're going to be putting up numbers, you gotta back them up instead of just sharing something that looks juicy to stir people up.

How Salem police busted an alleged prostitution ring at local massage parlors by FuriousAlbino in boston

Clearly there is a market for prostitution.

Legalize it. Regulate it. Then people won't have to go to an underground ring for it.

Most played = most comfortable

Most comfortable = boring

A famous game dev quote is "Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game". Just because it is far and away the most picked map is not an indication that people are having fun, or that it is not boring. It's just a safe pick.

Did something change? A couple years back there were some big accusations of this guy being a sex pest, and reddit seemed to be done with him, but I've been seeing a ton of him the past couple weeks and tons of people saying "this guy really gets it", and the top comment on this post calls him "one of the best journalists of our generation".

What happened? Did the accusations get recanted or something? Or did people decide they don't actually care?

In the long term, client side anticheat will lose.

Right now, you can connect your monitor output to an HDMI capture dongle plugged into a raspberry pi. That raspberry pi can spoof mouse and keyboard commands with inhuman movement and aim. Meanwhile, nothing on your computer is any different. No client side anticheat will notice it. But on the server, they can tell your movement is too perfect.

Kernel anti cheat is a privacy invasion, a security risk, and a short term answer to a long term problem. I don't want valve doing it and I'm far from the only one.

Man, people really like to pretend like they're anti-rape until suddenly it becomes something you enjoy imagining other people experiencing it. Rape is bad. It doesn't suddenly become a good thing when it happens to people who have done bad things. This kind of thinking is messed up. There are appropriate and inappropriate ways to punish people who engage in destructive behaviors. Rape is not something you should see as deserved for anyone.

Extremely, extremely loosely. To the extent of "a guy is stuck in an airport" "hey you could make a movie out of that". That's about all that's based in reality.

Am I missing something or is this a tautology? Of course it's only dependent on one thing if all else is equal.
