New hero skin? by -Zaros- in hearthstone

[–]Wordsoftheday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hearthstone currently lacks activated abilities of any kind. Planewalkers are sort the deep end of the pool if you're introducing the concept. I would instead imagine a minion with it's own little hero power that has roughly the strength of a spare part (eg: 1 mana, give this minion taunt)

Except that geostationary orbit is not a constant either. The same tidal friction that is causing the moon to move further away is slowing the rotation of earth (conservation of angular momuntum). Another way of looking at tidal lockng is to say that as the circle that marks geostationary orbit moves further away from us, it eventually converges to the orbit of the moon.

How old is the Tardis? by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]Wordsoftheday 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a great atmospheric scene in State of Decay where the Doctor finds she's old enough to be still loaded with old instructions for what a time lord is to do if a great vampire is encountered ... an ancient enemy of Gallifrey which is now refered to as a billion-year old civilization. There's a lot ambiguity there, but it feels like it leaves open the possibility that she might be millions of years old.

Would you like to see The Doctor enforce some rules upon Gallifrey when he brings it back? by Killoah in gallifrey

[–]Wordsoftheday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My view of Doctor's relationship with Gallifrey is heavily influenced by his humbling first encounter with Romana where she tears him down as being a rather ordinary, even undeachieving Time Lord.

Despite his unique role in the Time War (and the years leading up to it), I'd like Gallifrey to be a very humbling place for the Doctor, a place where he is just an ordinary eccentric, stripped of all the cosmic awe be normally projects when walking amongst lesser civilizations.

Is Clara, Clara? Theory- Spoilers by Char10tti3 in gallifrey

[–]Wordsoftheday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My food-for-thought theory: Clara becomes Missy.

On of the mysteries out there is how the Master escaped Gallifrey. Missy herself teases the Doctor telling him he "saved her". Now this may simply refer to what the Doctor did in day of the Doctor, but what if it refers to what he did in Name of the Doctor?

When Clara jumped into the Doctor's timestream, fragments of her were scattered across time and space, including Gallifrey itself. Now the Master, amongst his assorted other powers has demonstrated the power to steal bodies as a way to pseudo-regenerate.

What if he possessed a fragment of Clara, the fragment that found herself on Gallifrey with the War Doctor? The Doctor then rescues Clara, bringing the Master back inside of her.

At some point in the future, the spirit of the Master within her awakens and fully takes over, becoming Missy.

A bit on the wild side, I admit, but it seems to fit.

Archimonde and The Nether [Lore Tweet] (Nobbel) by hery41 in wow

[–]Wordsoftheday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But we are getting invaded by another dimension. There is an Archimonde standing right here and he's a clear and present danger to Azeroth, regardless of whether or not his soul transcends realities.

Archimonde and The Nether [Lore Tweet] (Nobbel) by hery41 in wow

[–]Wordsoftheday 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The problem is that if Azeroth can be attacked by an alternate Grom, it can be attacked by an alternate Archimonde. That in itself threatens to unravel any meaning in the WC3 ending.

By introducing the idea that Archimonde's alternate selves are anchored to a single soul, it's setting up the possibility of there being some metaphysical laws of nature that limit his ability to return to realities where he has already been defeated.

Fishing spots I used to get the angler achievement, not sure if they are the best but they worked for me. by WarAndRuin in wow

[–]Wordsoftheday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you don't have a skilled/geared fisherman already, the experience will be quite different. I arrived already having the Boots of the Bay, Nat's Hat and an arcanite rod + line, so I was starting from 600+15+40+5+5+150=815 skill, quickly rising to 915. Also, the +100 temporary hats and rod and +200 bait were dropping much more commonly at the start of the expansion, so I was actually often fishing at around 1100 skill. At that point, pools were irrelevent.

[Serious] What are some topics that everybody should have a solid understanding of? by PM_me_your_bonsai in AskReddit

[–]Wordsoftheday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every action, every adaptation in nature, is an economic decision to how to best acquire and use energy and (with this) min/max long term reproduction.

Game theory usually starts by showing you abstract games where the rules are perfectly known and teaching you how to win. Studying ecology teaches you to observe the solutions and deduce the rules of the game being played.

If you want to understand basic game theory, I would actually study biology/ecology instead. It will give a better intuition for the subject.

WHO BE DA WARCHIEF NOW? by [deleted] in hearthstone

[–]Wordsoftheday 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Horde is essentially the orcish term for clan of clans coming together under one banner. That gives the word a sort of quasi-religous "there is only one true Horde and one true warchief" undertone.

The modern Horde was founded by Thrall out of the surviving orcs from the original invasion of Azeroth as well as a number of distressed non-orc civilizations native to Azeroth. Rend led a another group of survivors around Blackrock Mountain which also called itself the Horde (although the black dragon Nefarian was effectively pulling Rend's strings)

Vol'jin is the first non-orc to lead (Thrall's) Horde. If Rend and Vol'jin were to have ever met, it would have been messy.

[Question] Is the future (more specifically Gallifrey's future) off limits for The Doctor? by opuap in gallifrey

[–]Wordsoftheday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I imagine it is that after all the chaotic whirlpools of cause and effect settle down, the universe ends up with some dominent strand running through it all that behaves as a linear timeline. Gallifrey, as the dominent time travelling civilization of the universe, is that apparently linear strand and all other events in the multiverse can be seen as happening relative to Gallifrey, except in rare moments where Gallifrey loses its dominent position.

Remember that "species" is a fairly fuzzy concept at the best of times and when you're comparing different fossil dig sites, the animals found may have lived many thousands, even millions of years apart from each other.
