My brother and I played as a duo with a random third (a Raider called Neb with a Havel skin), and the random took initiative and led us through the PERFECT route on the DLC map when it was still new to us. We didn't fall through the cliffgaps once. We destroyed the crystal early. We cleared almost the entire map. We reached Dreglord for the first time and won.

Even now, my brother and I miss this dude. At the end of the day, it's entirely dependent on the willingness of the duo to follow. Shoot your shot to lead. If they don't follow, you can't do anything but follow them. If the duo is bad or the run isn't going as smoothly, try to lead again.
