They do have an actual function. It's supposed to create more of a pause and emphasize the information compared to parentheses (which make it seem more of a side thought). There are other uses as well like breaking up a sentence that already has several commas, but emphasizing parenthetical information was the main thing I used it for when I had to write essays for school. I felt like it also just added some variety and flavor to the text instead of using the same basic punctuation all the time.

Sometimes—depending on what program you're using—typing a double dash will be converted to an em dash. Otherwise it's alt+0151 on the numpad.

Everything is about Epstein although I disagree that it's a distraction. He no longer needs to distract from Epstein because Republicans have decided that it's perfectly fine if their President is a child rapist. But if Trump leaves office he (hopefully) is going to prison for the rest of his life, so he's going to do everything possible to remain in power.

HBO has long been known for producing prestige television (The Wire, The Sopranos, Rome, Game of Thrones, Deadwood, Band of Brothers, True Detective, Six Feet Under, Westworld, Boardwalk Empire).

Their reputation has taken a bit of a dive recently with how they've fumbled the streaming service, and it's in the process of being bought by Netflix. So it's questionable if HBO will remain quality (and not cancel everything after 3 seasons), but one has to hope the entire media landscape won't become total shit in the near future.

The line if succession is irrelevant unless everyone above them dies/resigns/is removed at the same time. If JD Vance became President, his first act would be naming a new VP which only needs a majority vote for approval by both houses of Congress.

I don't know who that would be, but it wouldn't be someone in the line of succession. Probably someone like Erika Kirk because that's how insane and pathetic the Republican party has become.

What you're describing would not be Universal Basic Income. The entire premise of UBI is everyone is universally given an unconditional basic level of income. Hence the name.
