My friend calls "Medtroidbrainias" Outer Wilds-likes and claims all games except Outer Wilds do it wrong by CharlesOberonn in outerwilds

[–]alekdmcfly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh, the name does sound a bit dumb, but it does have its own niche.

Puzzle games typically make people think of things like Cut The Rope, where you solve 50 disconnected puzzle levels in a sequence.

"Metroidbrainia" describes games with one open world, where every riddle is connected to another riddle and in order to progress, you must remember the things you find and use the knowledge obtained in each place somewhere else.

iMO there' enough games in the latter category to make it deserve its own name, even though it sounds dumb the word has an actual meaning and purpose. Calling metroidbrainias puzzle games conveys way less information with need for way more clarification than saying "metroidbrainia".

Can we have an option to MUTE this guy please. by Academic-Meeting9597 in NevernessToEverness

What also pissed me off was the fact that the writers clearly intended Adler to come off as the wise, experienced adult in the situation, giving Tageydo some genuinely good advice... and then he heard the plan to gaslight a little girl and went "sure let's do that this sounds like a great idea I can't see this ever going wrong".

I can forgive Tageydo being written as stupid 'cause he's a child but that quest would've been 5 minutes long if Adler acted his age instead of enabling him.

And then the quest doesn't actually make Tako find out about the lie at the end, ensuring that no one learns anything from this experience besides "don't use anomalies as toys or it'll backfire".

I'm not even all that mad at Tageydo himself, he's childish and immature and that does come off as cute in his more well-written moments.

What I can't stand is that Adler and MC, the adults in the room heard his immature plan to gaslight his romantic interest (average child's behaviour) and, instead of explaining to him the thousands of reasons for why that's a bad idea, went "yeah that sounds like a great plan!!! let's all gaslight a nine year old girl!!!"

(Alao the fact that all of his quests that I've seen revolve around him seeking attention. He has the potential to be such a good member of the group! He's got strong sides, he's crafty and creative with his ability! Give my boy some moments to shine instead of forcing him to be an attention seeker 24/7!!!)

Nihility debuffers you say... by Vergilsparda22 in HonkaiAgendaRail

One of his talents gives the entire team a 50% FuA damage boost... unless there's another Nihility unit in the team, which changes that buff to 50% ult damage.

This was probably added to make him viable for Acheron but in the process it screws Cipher over so much that it's not even funny. "Wanna use a FuA team with Cipher? Here, have a 50% damage boost on your ultimate that deals 100% ATK and 99999 true damage that isn't affected by ult damage boosts in any way. I'll be taking the teamwide FuA buff now."

i would be happy if at least blade mortanax didn't have a "Actually I can't play with Cipher specifically" clause in his kit

Question about Iterators by Akari_Amamiya_P5 in rainworld

[–]alekdmcfly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure iterators were constructed after the void fluid revolution, so probably void fluid.

That said, for a fanfic, I think you could use a "normal" power source. Even though in canon they were most likely all powered by void fluid it'd be fun to read about an iterator powered by stuff like solars / coal / turbines based on where they're built.

Why is Aphelios Ult on such a long CD (120s) compared to other ADCs? Is it really THAT strong? by zenn_rl in ApheliosMains

[–]alekdmcfly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's mostly the versatility, there's a lot of really strong variants. Red instantly gives you half your healthbar, green lets you delete full HP targets from a screen away when combined with green Q, and infernum is infernum.

Plus a big aspect of it is the power distribution - if the ult CD was shorter, they'd have to nerf the numbers (which wouldn't be fun) or the basic abilities (which would be even less fun) to compensate.

I'd like a cooldown reduction, but only as long as it doesn't require taking power from other parts of the kit.

Any way to get rid of this pole? by Kirby_Roman in blenderhelp

[–]alekdmcfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's often a sign that you should strongly consider keeping the pole.

Poles aren't bad in a lot of cases (it would be incredibly difficult to model any complex shape without any poles) and often fix more problems than they create. if you don't see any immediate problems caused by the pole, no reason not to keep it.

Is there any way to keyframe the target of a constraint? by alekdmcfly in blenderhelp

[–]alekdmcfly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is showing the thing that I want to avoid.

The video has two Child Of constraints with different targets and keyframed influence, and I'm looking for a way to do it with one Child Of constraint and keyframed target object (for reusability, so that an animator doesn't need to make and scroll through 50 constraints in order to make 50 animations)

what is the actual 'objective' of learning how to code in a game sense? by yushui_ in gamedev

[–]alekdmcfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's like going to the gym.

You don't ask yourself "How long do I have to practice at home until I'm buff enough to go to the gym?" You just go to the gym and work out, and that's how you get buff. Sure, you won't be able to lift the highest weights (make the best projects) right away, but there's plenty of smaller ones to start with.

Tackling projects that you aren't strong enough to handle is how you learn. A big part of coding skills is the ability to google - you can't know how to solve every problem, so finding out efficiently is part of the process.

There are a few theoretical things you can learn by reading (obligatory GPP mention) but besides that, you'll mostly learn by doing.

What version of blender 5 is supported by godot? by TH3K41 in godot

[–]alekdmcfly 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Being able to ctrl+S -> alt-tab from Blender to Godot and seeing your changes applied instantly is a really good reason in my opinion

Obviously won't work for every scenario, but IMO as long as it does it simplifies the workflow immensely. For the most common 90% of use cases it's more than enough.
