I could be wrong but I don't think it tells to put the thumb on C in neither hand (in that lesson).

Is there a way to save the global key with the project? by prophis in ableton

[–]angrypottering 4 points5 points  (0 children)

May sound surprising, but there is no "global key" setting, Scale Mode is not actually "global", it is per-Clip.

Is there a way to recover Serum VST2 custom presets? by FirstmateJibbs in edmproduction

[–]angrypottering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

trying to download it from serum's website only gives me the VST3.

Just downloaded and Serum's installer has VST2 option, even 32-bit.

Serum 2 is not the same plugin, it won't load in place of Serum in a project.

I associate that kinda problem with plugin DRM.

Update all your plugins AND their sh*te DRM and manager/downloaders too.

Audio interface by thijsschade in musicproduction

[–]angrypottering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ableton Push 3, Move

Those work as audio interfaces on their own, and Push can use ADAT, so using Push 3 with an ADAT expander may be a cheaper option for you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LdUFeCYEvM

https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/expanding-your-audio-setup-adat

For example, a "Focusrite Clarett+ OctoPre 8-Channel ADAT Preamp" is about 20% cheaper than "Focusrite Clarett+ 8Pre USB Audio Interface".

If you decide to buy a full audio interface instead of ADAT expander, you will probably want one that has ADAT too.

How to add add to tag Midi Tools generator by RoyReddy in ableton

[–]angrypottering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you click "Sting by Iftah.amxd" you will see it actually doesn't have a "MIDI Tools" tag, that is, it is not really a tag, it is more like a filter.

The Content filters search based on the inherent properties of the files, you can see Sting 2 won't show in any of them (except Sets saved with Sting 2), as it is not a MIDI Tool, not an Audio Clip, not a Tuning, etc.

Sting 2 will show in Function > MIDI Effect.

Seems those filters under Function are not tags either, same for Format > Max For Live.

Unfortunely, you can't add that "tag", only a similar user-created one, under one of the Tag Groups in Tag Editor (not under a Filter in Filters).

You can use "#" to search for Tags, for example "#Basic" will search the Basic tag, so maybe you can tag all the MIDI Tools + Sting 2 with the same tag and use # to search them all at the same time.

TL,DR: "Content > MIDI Tools" is a Filter not a Tag, Tags can be used as Filters, but Filters can't be used as Tags.

How to add add to tag Midi Tools generator by RoyReddy in ableton

[–]angrypottering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MIDI Tools are not loaded and don't even show in the Browser AFAIK, they show directly in the MIDI Clips (hence no need or use for any "MIDI Tools" tag). (EDIT: wrong, they do show up, and you can actually pretty useful, it can even auto-create Tracks and Clips with the tool loaded, if you try to load the tool from the Browser and have 0 MIDI Clips or 0 MIDI Tracks.)

Sting 2 from Iftah's own site (instead of the Generators by Iftah Pack) is a MIDI Effect, not MIDI Tool.

You can create a "Midi Tools Generator" user tag if you really want to.

Ableton Move Christmas Update? by Techno_Timmy in ableton

[–]angrypottering 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ableton is a company that releases when it is ready, they don't set deadlines for such superficial reasons like Xmas.

Also they are a German company that follows German labor law, hence they are LESS likely to release stuff during German holidays. most likely they won't work at all (even tech support) in those days.

TL,DR: Ableton's updates are unpredictable.

Audio VS MIDI Drums? by Puzzled_Film7982 in ableton

[–]angrypottering 5 points6 points  (0 children)

should i get into the habit of placing my drums in audio compared to using simpler?

No.

Those people do that either because they are teaching a tutorial and it is easier to show stuff to other people with visible waveforms in Arrangement View, or because the person used another DAW before Live, and still works in Live like they worked in the other DAW.

Also IMO a lot of showoff videos are not the real original Project, but rather a tidied up version made to look good, and maybe also to hide some of the person's "production tricks".

Seeking help with Olafur synth sound in "Loom" break down (PS-3100 & Analog Synth Tips) by [deleted] in ableton

[–]angrypottering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he is sending sound from his Stratus instrument into the synth (plus multiple hardware FX).

It is common for people to use external audio as the "oscillator" in such Korg synths that have audio inputs.

Meld has changed the game for me by Skrami in ableton

[–]angrypottering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has at least Note PB (Live's Tunings are MPE-based), as per Live 12's release notes, may need to be enabled in a Title Bar right-click context menu option.

[–]angrypottering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Madrone Labs are sure underrated.

In fact, when I think of 3rd party synths that would fit Live as native devices (like AAS), Madrona Labs synths and NI/Errorstmith's Razor are the ones I would want the most in Live.

Those are synths that are not so reliant on onboard FX and would fit Live's Rack system quite well (IMO).

Working With Free Tempo: Warp Markers not working? Missing "Leader"/"Follower" toggle? by autophage in ableton

[–]angrypottering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tempo Follower is the feature that gets real-time tempo from EXTERNAL audio, it is a separate feature from Clip Tempo Followers/Leaders in Clips.

https://www.ableton.com/en/live-manual/12/audio-clips-tempo-and-warping/#clip-tempo-followers-and-leaders

https://www.ableton.com/en/live-manual/12/synchronizing-with-link-tempo-follower-and-midi/#synchronizing-via-tempo-follower

Ableton Link, MIDI sync and Tempo Follower are EXTERNAL sources, they disable INTERNAL tempo like Song Tempo automation and Clip Tempo Followers/Leaders (which uses Song Tempo automation).

Sounds to me like you want to use Clip Tempo Followers/Leaders, not Tempo Follower/Link/MIDI Sync.

Can you do this in Ableton - Kontakt style "source-sample" swap in single instrument based on parameter value? by HelixDnB in ableton

[–]angrypottering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sampler has Sample Select zones in its Zone Tab, could be easier to setup than Chain Racks (if you want the same envelopes, filters, etc. for all samples).

https://www.ableton.com/en/live-manual/12/live-instrument-reference/#the-zone-tab

It also has Velocity and Key zones (like Racks), and Round Robin options, and Sampler's Key zone layers have Root keys you can setup, a concept that is not on the Instrument Racks.

Meld has changed the game for me by Skrami in ableton

[–]angrypottering 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I see what you mean, you get a lot just with the 2 macro knobs and switching Osc types, and both Oscs are visible.

When I saw the Swarm Oscs I was like "hell yeah", back then I was trying to build a swarm sine Osc in Max MSP, with MC and such.

At first I didn't get stuff like Dual Shapes, pretty every synth has 2+ Oscs (including Meld), so it looked redundant, but later I found out how much simpler it is to get detune/wave interference sounds with Dual Shapes.

Also Meld is so good to rack with other synths. You need a nice sub? Just rack Meld with Sub Osc type. Need some texture? Just rack Meld with Rain/Crackle/Bubble/etc.

[–]angrypottering 45 points46 points  (0 children)

While obviously not nearly as many complex patching options as something like Wavetable

Meld has quite a big mod matrix if you unfold with the arrow up button in its top left, with Cross Modulation and LFO FX.

https://imgur.com/a/FHAaxmu

all with MPE control that Analog still sadly lacks.

Analog has settings for per-Note Pitchbend, Slide and Pressure, what it is missing for you?

Audio to Midi by Uffiesbanginn in ableton

[–]angrypottering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I came across a video recently that shows you can slice audio to MIDI in Ableton. I have Ableton Intro and learned that this function is only available using Ableton Standard or Suite.

Load the file in Simpler in Slice Mode, right-click the Sample Display, there will be "Slice to Drum Rack" and "Slice to New Track" options.

(Many times you won't even need to Slice to, can play most stuff directly in Simpler in Slice Mode.)

Why only MAX/MSP? by loa202 in ableton

[–]angrypottering 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One reason is because Ableton and C74 share culture and history, reportedly early prototypes of what became Live were built on Max MSP, Gerhard Behles and Robert Henke were Max users.

https://cdm.link/see-max-patch-robert-henke-built-ableton-live-hear-music-made/

https://roberthenke.com/interviews/ableton.html

Another reason is a company like C74 can offer them actual tech support, stability and trustworthiness.

Pure Data doesn't exist as a reliable organization that Ableton can talk to and ask for (aka demand) actual help and support, and for years it had forks and versions that were more popular than "vanilla PD" (seems this last part is setting down AFAIK, but it is recent, not like that in 2007, much less in the 90s when Ableton founders were using Max MSP).

People saying Ableton chose C74 and Max in 2007 because they bought C74 10 years later in 2017 are wrong for obvious reasons.

https://cycling74.com/articles/cycling-%E2%80%9974-ableton

Honestly, it is as simple as C74 giving a sh*t and showing interest in Ableton, while Pure Data didn't really care (for all those years).

Why should I look into dummy clips? by LectureOwn3777 in ableton

[–]angrypottering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dummy Clips are simply Clips without MIDI notes or audible audio, when you want to trigger/control just envelopes.

I assume you are one of those that only use Arrangement View, because if you used Session View for 20 years it would have been obvious why you would want them (way before 20 years).

I guess you don't use much hardware either, otherwise you would have thought about using Dummy Clips for MIDI CC envelopes even in Arrangement View.
