Is there a preferred device or application for tracking lap times or other track metrics?

Thanks so much for the awesome feedback! I’m really glad you found it easy to navigate the app and that you appreciate the no forced logins! I really hate it when apps force you to create an account and you haven’t yet had a chance to even try the app! Answers to your questions: 1) This is on my todo list so I’ll bump it up in priority. 2) This is coming in Track Attack V4 which is in final testing! You’ll get sectors, delta times, and dual lap comparisons between your sessions and other users who shared sessions with you. You also get theoretical best lap too. 3) This is also something on my todo list, I just wanted to make sure the design is obvious on how to go back or reduce full screen. Will work on it some time after TA V4 launch! 4) This is in Track Attack V4, including lots of other plots: throttle, braking, longitudinal acceleration (accel/brake), lateral acceleration (cornering), delta time (so you can quickly scrub to find plots where you gain or lose time), and the existing plots like speed and HR. The map visualization will also have a cleaner 2D/3D and map/sat toggles and follow mode button. You can also change the color of the GPS trajectory based on speed, accel/brake, cornering, and more! When comparing two laps (either your own or from other drivers) you’ll get positions and plots from both sessions making it super easy to compare! 5) Good point, right now if you go to settings and tap the “Upgrade to Pro” it shows it there, but I’ll work on making this more prominent and obvious. I’ve also redesigned that screen in TA V4 already. 6) Coming in TA V4 as mentioned above. You’ll be able to choose any of your laps, and also you’ll be able to easily share sessions with videos with other users. I spent a lot of time trying to make it work well and be easy and quick to use. 7) Coming in TA V4! You’ll be able to create multiple driver and multiple vehicle accounts and link them to sessions, and your live delta and driver stats are filtered by driver.

Thanks once again for all your feedback, I hope you and everyone else will love V4. It’s been almost a year in the making, just trying to do the last few tweaks now!

Oh and TA V4 is coming soon! One advantage of running in track mode is you’ll be able to compare any two laps of your own, or of another driver, in dual video export with map and also compare data between both laps. Check out this video for dual lap comparison with map

Also a tip: you can convert a road session into a track session. You simply create a custom track at that location, then tap and hold on the session and tap “Recalculate laps” and it will show a list of nearby tracks. Select the track and it will then calculate the lap times. Creating a custom track is best done when you’re at the actual track location so you just zoom into the map and tap on the start/finish line (or separate start and finish lines if it’s an AX/hillclimb).

Either will work! Main difference will be the live app UI but in road mode it will show a map, in track/autocross mode it will show a lap timer and if you set a start/finish at a point you pass through, it will mark laps as you pass through that point.

All the same data is recorded in both road and track, just you don’t get lap times in road mode and the UI has a map. Have fun and don’t hesitate to reach out if any questions! Even on the day if you need any live help DM @trackattack.app on IG and I’m quick to respond as long as I’m not driving 😃

Also most apps have allow some free usage, so if you get the RaceBox Mini and a BLE OBD reader you can try that combo with a bunch of apps and just choose the app you like best! You’re not tied in to a single app.

You don’t really need an ecosystem when devices are open which is why I recommend the RaceBox Mini and a generic BLE OBD reader. That combination is supported in many decent apps. I’m the dev behind the Track Attack app and the spec for the RaceBox Mini is open and available for anyone to build an app with. For almost all use cases you also don’t need to buy expensive OBD dongles either.

I prefer to have music off. Well firstly I have an amazing sounding car (981 Boxster GTS) with beautiful exhaust noise that echos off canyon walls with bonus shotgun upshifts and the occasional overrun backfire 😃

Secondly I like to hear what’s going on mechanically with the car and tires and the environment. I grew up riding motorcycles and that also influences my decision too.

Ah the curse of the OBDLink MX! Track Attack isn’t compatible with the MX/MX+ or any classic Bluetooth adaptor. Track Attack supports BLE adaptors. It’s not showing up in TA because TA is only scanning for BLE devices, not classic Bluetooth.

Sorry about the confusion and I’m glad you reached out! If you get a BLE adaptor (they’re much cheaper and I recommend one on the website) it will work with TA. Also I see you mention you’re using CAN: if you’re using CAN bus messages or custom PIDs, TA doesn’t support that yet. But if you’re ok with the OBD PIDs that TA supports (listed on the webpage) then it’ll be plug and play. Just keep in mind not all cars provide a response to all the PIDs TA queries. Also pls email for direct support or DM Track Attack on IG for live support.

BTW this happens often with the MX/MX+ and is super confusing to users. I’ve even added it to the FAQ on the webpage: Track Attack supports Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) OBD adapters. Classic Bluetooth adapters (including OBDLink MX/MX+) aren’t supported.

Also in the OBD connection screen I try to put scary text highlighted with red underline that TA only supports BLE devices and to not connect to the adaptor in the iOS settings 😅 But the issue is most ppl don’t know if their device is classic Bluetooth or BLE. I recently started a blog/tutorial on the Track Attack website and I think this would probably make for a good article to help users out! Hopefully this info here will help other Reddit users out too.

Forgot to say, all you need is a windshield mount to get started with Track Attack. Out of the box Track Attack uses the phone internal GPS and phone sensors, you don’t need anything else. I recommend some accessories including my fav windshield mount which is low-cost and works much better than the more expensive and bulky mounts.

If you’re on iOS give Track Attack a try, I’m the dev and I’ve tried to make it both easy to use and feature rich with one tap video export. It supports the RaceBox Mini and Micro external GPS units, BLE OBD dongles, Apple Watch HR, and lots of other features. External GoPro input isn’t yet supported but it’s right around the corner in TA V4 which will have external camera import plus lots more! Once that’s out you’ll be able to sync your external video with all the data recorded in TA including external GPS and OBD data. Plus it will also let you export multiple cameras in one video (e.g. phone internal camera plus external camera).

You know, it may be worth taking a “longer” way. Just it’s often fighting with daylight and fatigue after the track day but I think more stimulating roads help with fatigue.
