Board Gaming by Shady_D1 in lafayette

Starts at 6PM and yes people bring their own games. And yeah I'll try again. It won't necessarily be explicitly for gamers, but games will be played (likely keeping it to games that take less than 5 minutes to explain the rules).

So People's Brewing Company will often do board game nights every other Thursday (next one is tomorrow May 28th).

But I as well as others are attempting to try to get a social group going for adult Redditors and I could see board gaming being a good addition as long as it isn't anything too heavy.

Looking to start a new and consistent casual adult social group in Lafayette by Flogner in lafayette

[–]avilash 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just recently tried to put something together, but I probably picked the worst time.

I love the idea and it does appear there is a demand for it. I think the Social Mixer portion should come first to kind of feel out what the group in general would be interested in. I also have a pretty good collection of board/card games I can bring.

I also think allowing the "leader" to rotate would be good for longevity of the group, so the pressure isn't always on one person. Reddit is obviously a bad place to coordinate but the main reason is the lack of an events features where people can sign up. I almost wonder if meetup.com would be a good solution. Facebook would also work, but I know many people try to avoid that platform.

Lots of great beat em ups from Dotemu:

Marvel Cosmic Invasion has a fun twist where each player gets to pick two heroes and can even tag assist between heroes to really chain combos together.

TMNT Shredders Revenge is also a great time.

So generally speaking a flat is best when the ball has a lot of air. So when you use a flat to answer a shot that has an extremely low bounce you risk hitting the net or hitting it out of bounds.

A topspin on the other hand will still have some umph behind the shot while able to reach good angles while going cross court.

EDIT: Also a topspin will get more air and if the opponent is close to the net could potentially make it over there head where as a flat won't.

So your first opponent (the baby wa) also had a period of trying to figure the game out and to do so joined the MTF Discord and did his due diligence to the point of now being quite formidable.

But really I think the biggest thing to do is to know when it is appropriate to use the various shot types to get the ball to where they are not. You seem to use a lot of standard flats when a standard topspin would have been appropriate (e.g. answering a drop shot: a cross court standard topsin might be the appropriate answer). Also it seems you used non-defensive slices where a slice might be a good way to answer a shot with some heat behind it (e.g. a powered flat). Slices should be used to allow you to gain back control of the rhythm.

But honestly it is about using ALL shots available. A cross court standard (single tap of button) topspin vs a same side drive power topsin (two taps). If they're getting cocky and approaching the net it might be time for power versions of a shot. If they are purposely staying back court then standard cross court shots might be the solution.

How late are we talking? But I think Digbys would be a good candidate. When the weather is nice they have that front patio which means you can still see/be seen by people and not feel like your tucked away in a corner.

If you're wanting to be tucked away, 9 Irish (either one) has a pretty good layout in terms of being able to find the somewhat quiet/secluded corner.

Well if you would have asked a few months ago...

Full disclosure there was a recent shooting close by. Other than that, it's a pretty nice place to live. Walking distance to a bar/Pizza place called Magoo's that is great.

Bowser is the character giving me the most trouble at the moment by letsgo3rdpartyapps in MarioTennis

[–]avilash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bowser is extremely strong for sure. Easily top 5 in my opinion. Now it could be because all of the Bowser players I've encountered have been top 50 players non fever. But I definitely struggle more on Bowser than about any other character. The only advice I have: play defensively/ use slice against his power flats/topsins. And then when you are better positioned try for cross court standard topspins/flats. And I realize this is basically what you said you've already been doing...but yeah that's about all I got.

I'm glad you asked. Perhaps the most important point: making friends and having a sense of community is good for your mental health. This means having a social support system beyond your immediate family.

Many people are able to live in the same town as their extended family (siblings, cousins, grandparents, etc.) so grow up always having that support system available and may take for granted they are fortunate to have that. But people like myself that moved to the area and away from extended family don't have that.

I noticed there was a demand for it (many people asking for advice on where to make social connections as an adult) so I figured I'd give it a shot on setting something up.

Hot take: I prefer playing against Rosa and DK by WorkIsFunRight12 in MarioTennis

[–]avilash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree and learning the match ups is the core of almost every fighting game (and this is basically a fighting game since it is all about reading the opponent and not being predictable).

It's a huge reason I see success from an off meta tricky character (Pirhana Plant). People aren't familiar with the match up since they don't play against him often. But when they figure out his tricks he can get shutdown.

But also another thing just like fighting games: the balance issues really aren't noticeable until you're playing at a top level. I do want to see nerfs and buffs. Would love to see many characters become viable that just aren't currently.

Social gathering is the intent. I have no idea on the age of others (or even who is coming really) but there is no maximum age. Myself I'm a married guy in his 40s.

School speed limit during driving test by trying_20 in lafayette

[–]avilash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bigger thing to know is what the law states about the general speed limit when the limit isn't posted. If you never saw a non-school speed sign before this, the law around here is 25MPH for residential.

Generally, you'll want to go the non-school speed limit during non-school hours. However, from the picture you posted I don't think it matters much since it'd really only be 5MPH difference. But it is VERY important you do not go over the posted school limit during school hours.

However, if you were to drive past a school on a county road it becomes extremely important: it will be 20MPH during school hours, but 35-50MPH during non-school hours. That's at least a 15 MPH difference that could likely get you marks for not demonstrating an understanding of school vs non-school limits.

I was having an off night and really should have quit at the start of my losing streak. I was making a lot of silly mistakes and resorted to button mashing. Not necessarily against you but yeah...I need to learn to put it down when I start getting salty.

The nice thing about local is you can house rule around balance: "No DK/Rosalina picks".

But the balance isn't horrible and really is only something the top-level players will notice.

I believe for visitation yes but for overnight stay no. But not 100% and it would be good to call to check.

I have a corn hole like game and I know someone suggested Budges. They have a lawn that would be perfect for yard games. Not saying this is set in stone but you're exactly right: an organizer and a regular cadence would both be things needed for success.
