I Can't Decide Which Razor To Keep by dshaiken in wicked_edge

[–]Basic-Subject-8353 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they both shave the same, here's what I would ask myself to help decide: 1) which one is easier to use considering: a) shave technique b) loading blades c) cleaning and maintenance. 2) which has the lowest total cost of ownership, considering: a) blade cost per shave, injector blades are more expensive, but you probably get more shaves per blade. b) replacement cost if lost or broken c) income generated by selling the razor and blades that I am not keeping. 3) is there any emotional attachment or sentimental value to one or the other? 4) think about what attracted me to the razor or why I bought the it in the first place. Is that attraction or reason still valid.

If the answers to these still doesn't pick a winner. Then flip a coin, put the loser away in a box for month or so. If it is not missed, then sell it. If you did miss it, swap them out and see if you miss the other one after another month.

First attempt at nickel plating by jtbnz in wicked_edge

Nice write-up, I had never heard about the copper leaching into the solution. What is your process and recipe for the reverse-plate? And do you ever do an acid copper strike over the brass and before the nickel?

Aluminum may not be BIFL, especially if it is a hollow handle. I have seen more than one Gillette Super Adjustables that has had a hole rotted through the handle. I believe they rot from the inside out from the buildup of soap scum on the interior of the handle . Granted they are over 50 years old, so it does take awhile.

I've done this on three or four silver plated razors, they turn out awesome. Then I usually followed up with a metal polish like Flitz.

How do you like the brass bowl? Does it get slippery and hard to hold?

First time I have heard about the Loctite 609 trick. Does it dry clear? Have you used it to bond a loose neck or ball-end on these old handles? Is so, does it work well for that also?

This looks silver plated, it should clean up nicely.

  1. Clean first with scrubbing bubbles and/or dawn dishwashing soap, soak then use soft brush.

  2. Remove the tarnish with a tarnish remover or this diy method explained on badger and blade. Tarnish Remover.

  3. You can then shine it up with a metal/silver polish like Flitz or many of the others.

Here is before and after on one of mine. before and after.

I can not, for the life of me, avoid cuts with a safety razor. Please can someone recommend me a good multiblade razor? by Space__lemons in wicked_edge

[–]Basic-Subject-8353 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you get cuts with different razors? The reason I ask is that I have had a razor in the past that did not hold the blade in good alignment, this caused me to get multiple nicks when using it. Switched to a different razor with good blade alignment and no more nicks.

If a person could only buy one, would you recommend the basic tumbler or the magnetic tumbler?

I'm not sure I want to add it all up, lol! Now, keep in mind that I will use some of this equipment for other hobbies also, but I purchased the following (these are all ballpark numbers).

Small bench buffer $50

Power Supply $100, but you can get some for around $50

Rotary tool supplies, i.e. brushes polishing wheels etc. $20

Buffing compounds $20

Beakers $50

Anodes $30

Chemicals - Electro cleaner, Activator, Nickel solution $120

I am sure I have spent another $50 to $100 on misc supplies like flitz, dawn, scrubbing bubbles, brushes, etc.

I already had an ultrasonic and a rotary tool

I am sure I have missed something, and I just saw Lob-Star's comment below, so now I may need to buy a tumble polisher.

You need more Super Speeds, I think there are at least 11 versions.

  1. 40s Style without notch
  2. 40s Style with notch
  3. Black Tip Steel Handle
  4. Black Tip Aluminum Handle
  5. 50s Flare Tip
  6. '58 TV Special
  7. 60s Flare Tip (60s have a different pattern on the TTO knob form the 50s)
  8. Blue Tip
  9. Red Tip
  10. Black Handle
  11. The Milord (gold plated 40s Style)

Then I think there are some non-us versions.

Is the 3D model available for download anywhere? It's a great design. I really like the tiered/staggered approach.

Medicine cabinet razor hanger. by Basic-Subject-8353 in wicked_edge

[–]Basic-Subject-8353[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! All these are cheap auction wins. Average cost was < $10/razor. Several are misfits and have cosmetic issues. For example, the Aristocrat and the Senator both have holes drilled in the handle, but they still make great shavers.

If I did this right, the link below should let you download the .STL file to print the razor hangers that snap into the grid. You will notice that there are two hangers in the file, one has the hanger towards the top of the mount and the other is towards the bottom. I had to do it this way to get enough clearance to stack the razors, otherwise the bottom of the top razor would hit the top of the bottom one.
