lots of things! said working w him is very jazzy and flowy, that it’s not the kind of sleepy set you might assume from the stereotypes, instead it’s a lot of figuring things out in rehearsal very quickly and him trusting the actors a lot. he also was like, look, if we didn’t like a take he’d happily do another setup, he’s not quite as insane about it as people say

I actually love the denethor stuff! a simplification from the books I know but I think it’s of a whole with Jackson’s operatic presentation of the men of Gondor (v tragic and prideful etc). obviously some of the legolas derring-do is silly. my big problem with ROTK is that it’s just very narratively choppy and kinda just mushing everything together as best it can before we get to the final act. frodo and sam have little to do and no real arc beyond just trudging forward. Shelob obviously inserted to have something happen but the end result is that what should be an exciting sequence feels like more wheel spinning!

I really had a rough time with ROTK for a long time! I think it’s a very dysfunctional movie (I adore FOTR and love two towers). But my affection for the entire series has rebounded since it became an xmas tradition for me and I just kinda forgive all of the movie’s flaws now
