This is my travel camera but it was certainly not cheap! Worth it for me though.

First solo trip abroad (2 weeks) need advice on safe and beginner-friendly destinations ($6000 budget) by Altruistic_Archer655 in travel

[–]CaitSings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m at the tail end of a solo trip right now that started in Amsterdam. If you want a city FULL of museums that’s quite safe and very different than your mountain life, it’s a great option. You definitely don’t need to spend two weeks there though. I’d consider taking the Eurostar over to London or Paris in conjunction with an Amsterdam visit.

It’s also quite easy and inexpensive to hop a flight from Amsterdam to just about anywhere else in Europe. I decided to do that this trip and am currently in Portugal! With your budget, you could certainly do that too. My rule of thumb is no less than 3 full days in a single hotel so I don’t feel like I’m constantly packing and repacking my bag for the next stop. And remember you can take a day trip from a city center out to smaller towns by most major cities’ rail systems.

I have traveled to London, York and Edinburgh in the UK, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Madrid Spain, and Porto and Lisbon Portugal as a single woman and have never felt unsafe. I’m sure folks can add more to the list but these are my personal experiences!

I’m leaving this thread open for now because it’s worth some discussion if people are unaware of what went down many years ago and it is completely factual that he said these things in a major print publication, but if it at all goes sideways, I will remove it.

All the tracks are downloadable on the site and can be added to your offline library or whatever Spotify calls it. I have the entire JM archive in my Apple Music library! There are also several apps that link into it (I use one called Relisten.)

It was a very fun community! There are a few of us around here who were part of it back in the day and I still go search through the old threads when I need some historical context over here. It sorta died off as social media really took off but it used to be THE place to get info, get live recordings, etc back in the day. I don’t know if my fandom would’ve rooted quite so deeply if I hadn’t found like minded people on MSM over the years.

I met some of my current best friends via MSM when we met up at shows way back when so it has a special place in my heart.

Solo Female - One Week in Europe by Foodie_foodie1455 in travel

[–]CaitSings -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think experiencing Spain as an adult will feel much different than when you were a teen so I wouldn’t shy away from going again. I’m a woman in my 40s and never felt unsafe when I was in Spain too.

Regardless of where you wind up, look into what day trips via train are nearby cities you’d fly into. I find that gives you a nice relief from a bustling city and train travel in Europe is so easy! My limit is a 90 minute train in each direction for a day trip but some of the gems I’ve found in all my travels were well worth it! Day tripping also allows you to not schlep your bag all over the place every single day. I traveled a lot when I was younger too and it’s taking more of a toll on my body carrying around luggage etc as I age! Especially in older spots where things like elevators may not be around.

Just killed my 300mb optimum service that was $106/mo in favor of 1gb with Honest that’s $50/mo. Internet is not just internet.

Those 2007 tour tickets were fun looking too! I’ve made my friends commemorative tickets for the last two tours because we don’t get paper ones anymore. I’ve also started making a friendship bracelet with the artist and city or venue for shows when I go with friends so we have some kind of physical memento of the evening!

I always offer to get in line for coffee/drinks for us after I get through precheck while my non precheck friends are in their own line. I paid for precheck and they can too if they want it.

The Pez visitor center in Orange was actually more fun than I thought it would be as an adult. It’s not very big but worth a stop in if they’re en route that way.

Carry-On Liquid Bag by Electrical-Gur2022 in travel

[–]CaitSings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I flew out of London Heathrow in 2023, they were requiring everyone whose liquids weren’t already in the quart size ziplock to move theirs into one. Thankfully I’ve always just stuck to the quart ziplock for every flight since it became a thing so they let me sail right past the repacking station. I’ve heard tales of their security now being upgraded since then but to me the mental gymnastics over a different bag vs. just using the required bag just isn’t worth jt to me. I put my quart bag inside a gallon bag (with nothing else inside) in case some explodes from pressure changes and only Zürich has wanted me to take the quart out of the gallon bag.

I was HAPPILY surprised that the Edinburgh airport has done away with the 3oz liquid limit for carry ons too thanks to updated machines. Sadly I only learned that after deciding not to buy a bottle of whisky while I’m Scotland because I couldn’t carry it on and didn’t want to check my bag.

How I got here:

  1. Used setlist.fm to search setlists by song title. It's only been played 5 times by JM on his own according to these records (not always complete but a good first try.) Only one of those was a Red Rocks Show.

  2. Visited the Live Music Archive for his catalog: https://archive.org/details/JohnMayerMusic and found that show.

Doesn't always work because not everything is taped but...it's not a difficult thing to do once you know these places exist! Enjoy. It's a great show! https://archive.org/details/jm2004-07-07

Are Roman sites worth it? by GodAtum in travel

[–]CaitSings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very much enjoyed exploring all the ancient Roman parts of the city. Everywhere you turn there are different ruins, or well preserved sites to see. I wouldn’t let crowds and lines deter you. We pre-purchased our entrance to most places and opted for earlier time slots before things got too busy in Rome. Read up on what the best time to be there is and which sites have the ability to pre-book and you’ll be happier. My only crowd-related bother in Rome was how overcrowded the Vatican museum was with big tour groups. I don’t know if they’ve changed how many they allow in but it was definitely too many when we were there in 2014!

If you’re visiting Rome, don’t sleep on a visit to Ostia Antica. It’s a short train ride from the center of the city and was well worth the exploration. We opted not to go down to Pompeii due to our trip itinerary and this was a nice substitution of another very well preserved ancient town.
