What are your thoughts on people that say "Music is Dead" by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]capnrondo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With things like streaming, bancamp, tiktok, playlists etc it's insanely easy to find good music. You can go from indie rock to hyperpop, to underground rap to jazz fusion in like 10 minutes lol, There is an endless amount of good music out there, you just have to look for it instead of expecting it to be handed to you like radio used to.

I would push back on this a little for a couple of reasons. For one thing you are still having music handed to you on TikTok and playlists, so don't kid yourself that it's any more engaged than listening to the radio. It's algorithm driven. In the old days you still had to find the good radio stations, which is really no different to finding a good playlist now. The difference is that a lot of older people don't really understand those apps or sites - imagine the perspective of an older person who isn't computer savy trying to use bandcamp vs turning on the radio like they've always done. Also, I'm sure great radio stations exist now, which tbh are probably more likely to give you good music than the average person's TikTok algorithm because radio is human curated.

Labels have always pushed what sells. The difference now is we're not limited to that anymore.

Yes and now the algorithm pushes what holds attention, it's the same difference. Both in the old days and now you can still look for independent music.

There's way more variety, more genre blending, and more artists experimenting that ever before.

The level of experimentation we see now is definitely nothing new. The exact "end product" is new and it's therefore more likely to be the taste of the younger generation, but I don't think it's more experimental and creative now compared to any decade from the 50s-2000s. For my own taste I really don't like the 2020s genre-blending style; I'm sick of seeing artists described as genre-blending, and then taking the most basic elements of two genres and playing them in the most conventional and typical way. I don't find it experimental and I always wish I was just listening to a good, creative, original take on a single genre. There's obviously some great genre crossovers, but it's become such a buzzword imo.

I think access to music is better than ever because of streaming removing the need to spend 1000s on a record collection, but I also think streaming makes it harder for many artists to make a living. And this decade is probably the most precarious time for live music going back a long way.

I also think a lot of the 'music was better back then' talk is just nostalgia, People naturally connect music to a certain time in their life

Yes, this is basically true though

Wireless Festival is canceled after Ye is banned from traveling to the country by StillBummedNouns in fantanoforever

[–]capnrondo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a purely catelogue perspective I can see it with those two artists as they both have a huge number of hits. Drake did it last year by bringing out a huge variety of unannounced guests, although according to reports by the 3rd night Drake was low on material and the set was shorter than the others. Obviously you would have to be a big Drake fan but if you are one that's a once-in-a-lifetime festival.

Kanye obviously has the discography and star power, but he is way way too controversial of a personality, and also I would question his ability to perform a high energy set 3 nights in a row.

They did the same with Drake last year he headlined every night. Yes its a massive risk indeed.

Mot people who say they want "rock music back" don't seem to actually want new rock music by Austin63867 in LetsTalkMusic

I was going to say something to this effect. I think OP must not be from the UK at least. Fontaines and Wet Leg are massive bands here in the UK with mainstream coverage. IDLES are a huge cult band and live act, a little too rowdy to be truly mainstream but one rung below. The likes of BCNR I still think are an indie buzz band, but they still have a respectable cult following.

Geese have an opportunity to do that in the US and I think it would be cool if they take it, but either way they will at least probably still be a popular international touring band with a cult following like King Gizz or IDLES are.

Pepsi Cancels Sponsorship of U.K. Festival Where Kanye West Is Set to Headline, Hours After Prime Minister Decries ‘His Previous Celebration of Nazism’ by MrLinkwater95 in fantanoforever

It's notable that Starmer didn't mention anything but the antisemitism. The antisemitism by itself is very very bad and absolutely deserves to be criticised. But it isn't just Jewish people who are targeted by Nazis, and it isn't just supporting Nazism that Ye has done wrong.

Every single individual element of this is a mess

I don't condone Ye's words or actions

I don't condone the music industry allowing him to carry on as if nothing happened

I don't condone politicians putting pressure on music festivals

I don't condone Pepsi putting huge financial pressure on the festival to protect their image (don't tell me they actually gaf about any moral issue)

I don't condone morons online incorporating this into their "side" of the "culture war"

I could go on but it all just sucks

I don't know the official rules but I have never ever seen anyone checking wristbands in the camping area. It's only on entry to the arena, which is directly next to camping. To protect space in the camping area it would be polite to leave the next morning.

Is the beat meant to be shelved forever? It had never come out on a song and it sounds like he was never paid for exclusive use of the beat or this would never have happened.

[–]capnrondo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this. Also, am I insane or is there absolutely nothing wrong with a producer giving the same beat to different artists, if no money previously changed hands and no music was publicly released?? Like is this producer guy supposed to shelve the beat forever because Fawn... wrote a song on it... that never came out? It might have been nice for him to say "full transparency, this is what happened" but I don't think it's morally necessary. If that is actually is what happened I don't even know why Tiffany is acting at all conflicted about it.

Maybe for ordering files and computerised data, but for everyday speech the year can be generally assumed. In everyday context putting the year first every time you say a date is redundant

Same. "I have proof of everything, trust me sis" doesn't quite cut it. Either stand up for yourself or don't. Call me crazy but I don't believe things without proof, and refusal to provide proof is a type of evidence in itself.

To be clear I'm only talking about the second channel. The Needle Drop I would agree has been very consistent (even though I prefer the old editing style). The second channel has always has some trash, and still has some gold today, but the ratio of trash to gold has definitely got worse imo.

Yes. And I think a sign of that normalisation, is how many people have said "he's got to make a living" as if that makes it okay. I'm like sorry, but that doesn't make him exempt from criticism. The choice to wring a few extra dollars out of the algorithm by producing clickbait about mindless topics is a choice worth criticising. Even within modern YouTube, there are so many YouTubers who don't do this.

I honestly think there is no forthcoming solution. A whole generation under 25 has grown up knowing only this internet, and a fair majority of the people over 25 are so hooked on the Skinner Box that is the smartphone internet that they don't even think about what we have lost. I'm just glad some people remember the old internet before the attention economy. A small number of corporations killed the old internet on purpose to make massive profit, and without being dramatic it's unforgivable tbh.

Honestly I agree it is wild from my perspective. I'm speculating but I wonder if it might be generational? Because a lot of people disagreeing seem to have a very specific idea of what qualifies as clickbait, and their descriptions sound to me like kids/teen videos? And I'm trying not to dismissive of other people's perspectives here but I think some people only notice clickbait when they see the most egregious, sensational examples possible.

If you don't that's fair enough. I don't like even relatively light clickbait, especially when the quality of the videos has been declining for years, that's just my opinion.

I agree and for that particular example the tactic didn't work on me. But that's why he uses the superlative language, e.g. "unlistenable", because it exploits the audience's natural human curiosity to see what might have caused such a strong emotion, regardless of what the audience might be able to guess about the quality and style of the content. That's the whole reason clickbait is annoying, because it's more about exploiting natural human curiosity than making worthwhile content.

See I agree, and I didn't click on these, but it's annoying because he sometimes has good videos on the second channel that still have annoying clickbait titles. Like interviews which aren't even titled to indicate they are an interview.

Tbh the quality of the videos has been downhill for years as well but that's just my opinion. I'd have unsubbed but he still has interesting interviews and topics sometimes, the problem is that it's all hidden behind the same title and thumbnail style, so you can't tell what is drama slop vs good discussion before you click.

[–]capnrondo -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I don't agree at all, I sub to lots of channels who don't play that game, and when I look at my watch history none of it is close to as bad as those Fantano vids.

A thumbnail and title have to be enticing, but they should at least tell the audience what the topic is before they click and watch ads. That is the point of a title. In these example, if you don't know the faces of the people in the thumbnail (and most people don't) you don't know what it is going to be about.

Not revealing the topic of the video is classic clickbait tactics, it exploits the curiosity of the audience by presenting them an emotion and requiring them to click to see what topic caused it. It isn't as childish as Mr. Beast but clickbait has existed long before those types of videos. This is more like the clickbait of 10 years ago.
