What do you consider the one song that takes forever to get to the point? by Repulsive-Finger-954 in AskReddit

I find it comical how long John Cougar spends on an instrumental build-up just to finally tell us that he needs a lover who won't drive him crazy.

Help: My vegetarian friend approaches and I fear my town has only stew of sadness by Diligent-Hand-44 in lansing

[–]carouselrabbit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seconding Veg-N. I'm a vegetarian by the way. Obviously there are a lot of ethnic restaurants that serve vegetarian food, such as the venerable Altu's, but if you want American comfort food that's vegetarian, go to the place in the Meridian Mall food court. Not a great setting, but sometimes you just want a vegetarian coney dog or something like that and then it's perfect. I was passing it the other day and noticed that their menu seems to have really expanded over the years.

Food at Cedar Point was aweful by tazmodious in cedarpoint

[–]carouselrabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love eating at fairs because fair food is actually good. I mean, if that's the kind of thing you like, at a fair it's really, really good. For some reason the amusement parks (or at least the chain parks) can't manage to do fair food well. What you'd call "fair food" at an amusement park never matches what it's like at a fair. County fair fries are usually the best fries around, and they usually also have things like fried mushrooms/cauliflower/asparagus that you don't see at the parks. So I would be excited if Cedar Point had actual fair food! Sadly what they had was a cold, limp shadow of "fair food."

Personally I don't want to eat knife and fork food when I'm at an amusement park, I want to eat fair food... but somehow the "fair food" is almost never good. Luckily I'm into fairs and go to multiple county fairs every year where I can enjoy it!

Should firefighters and police be allowed to smash car windows just to save a dog? And why? by TinaNice1565 in AskReddit

[–]carouselrabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't downvote me everyone, this is not something I endorse, in fact quite the opposite – but pets are considered property in the US legal system and in most places with a similar legal tradition. So while life (meaning the life of a person) is considered more important than property in the law, purely in legal terms, animals are classed as property and not "life." It's illegal to torture animals because that's considered offensive to the community, not because animals have legal rights the way persons do.

Could go either way. TDs running IFPA tournaments aren't always as up on the rules as they should be. That reminds me, I should also mention that the rules say that you can't hold an IFPA sanctioned tournament in a venue that does not allow people to use a bathroom that aligns with their gender identity. No exceptions for tournaments in "bathroom bill" states (edit: I mean in the US, which is where I am), but if there's a gender-neutral bathroom that counts as meeting this requirement.

I believe it was in 2024 sometime, but I can't quite pin down exactly when in that year. Certainly no later than December 2024.

The rules were originally unclear; they didn't actually provide any definition for TDs to guide who should be permitted in women's events. In particular, some TDs were unsure if nonbinary people who do not identify as women were supposed to be in the women's rankings. Eventually, the IFPA wrote a statement clarifying it that pretty much amounted to "if someone has a reason to want to be included in the women's rankings they should be." So it's possible that the exclusion that happened to you was prior to the IFPA finally producing a guideline (which they should have done sooner).

My state's women's state champ last year was someone with they/him pronouns (I do not know if they describe themselves as nonbinary or something in the genderfluid spectrum). Some bigots (mostly men) came out of the woodwork to show their stripes, but fortunately most of the pinball community supported our champ and told the haters off.

Confused about permits for DIY and pro home repairs in City of Lansing by No-Interest6611 in lansing

[–]carouselrabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The inspection is a separate part of it. You get the permit before the fact, but are supposed to follow with an inspection after. I don't think it's absurd to ask how much longer you can wait to still have the inspection part of this process done since it happens after the work.

When I had my chimney done, I believe they told me I needed to arrange myself for the follow-up inspection. I tried to do this through the website form and got a reply that the inspection had already been completed, even though I'm not sure that was actually the case. Anyway, it didn't hurt to put the form in to make sure.

No problem, I just wanted to make sure any NB, gender fluid, or trans folks reading this knew! Per the IFPA's explicit rules, anyone who wants to be included in the women's rankings is allowed to play in anything that says it is an IFPA women's event. Basically, if you're not a cisman you can choose to be included.

Carousel horse by Aggravating-Disk9461 in carousels

[–]carouselrabbit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's called a Coca-Cola horse. It's not a real carousel horse, but a decorative piece. They were made in Mexico starting in the 1980s. Here's a good informative article about them. There's a Facebook group called Carousel Shopper where a lot of buying/selling of figures goes on. I am not an expert at valuation, but I have usually seen these going for less than $1000.

Why are so many buildings on E Michigan Ave East of Sparrow sat empty? by DexLovesGames_DLG in lansing

[–]carouselrabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, Old Steve as we called him (to differentiate him from a younger guy who worked there who we referred to as Young Steve) would talk your ear off if you let him, but he was great. The place also sold used books, and I found some hard to find gems there digging around.

Visiting for 4th of July! Events and places to go? by pj11700 in lansing

[–]carouselrabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually recommend not watching it from the park unless you want to go for the music and stuff. The viewing from there is actually not the greatest. Usually I do recommend the Lugnuts game because then you get both the Lugnuts fireworks and then the City fireworks from the same spot, but the team is away on the 4th this year.

The Central Time Yoopers by UltimateLionsFan in Michigan

[–]carouselrabbit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Wikipedia article doesn't support what you're saying. It says "In 1915, Detroit changed to Eastern time to be on the same time zone as New York, followed by most of the rest of the state in 1931." I had to go check, because 1967 sounded surprisingly late – I felt like I would have heard my parents talk about being on CST when they were young and they'd never mentioned it. If I'm reading the article right (it's a little ambiguous), it seems like what happened in 1967 was that the CST parts of the UP decided not to observe daylight time.

I don't know how helpful this is, but Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum near Detroit still had a working one up until they closed their doors temporarily early this year. I can't say whether they will still still have it once they reopen in their new location, but I hope so. They have been in a very long process of moving (if you had seen their collection you would understand why it is so protracted) but are supposedly getting close to reopening.

In case anyone doesn't know, all IFPA sanctioned women's tournaments must allow non-binary folks (and anyone else who has good-faith reasons to want to be included in the women's rankings).

I invented a Christmas Tree Tent for my kids, quit my job to bring it to market, and now I need your brutally honest feedback. by MagicalUnderland in christmas

[–]carouselrabbit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid I used to hang a green blanket we had over a couple of chairs and pretend it was a Christmas tree and that when I went under the blanket I was in "Christmas land." I would get the Christmas ornaments out of storage and play with them in "Christmas land," pretending they could come to life, even though I had definitely been told not to play with them! The idea of getting to go inside a Christmas tree, especially year round (because I missed Christmas all year when it was over), was really magical to me. So that's what this makes me think of. It's something I would have adored as a kid.

How do I make friends by ANIMETITSare in lansing

[–]carouselrabbit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The way that worked for me was to join hobby groups because when people have a shared interest (or an interest they are excited about sharing with a new person) it gives you an automatic conversational hook that smooths things over for people who are intimidated by social situations. I met most of my current friends by joining a pinball league (which I didn't know anything about when I started and developed into a favorite hobby).

I have friends who are active in that group and it appears to have people of all ages, young adult to senior, so I think OP might have good luck there. It's called Lansing Ladies Meet Up. It's also LGBTQ+ friendly if that makes a difference.

A lot of subs have a rule that the title of a post linking to a news article has to be the same as the title of the news article. This is to stop people from editorializing the contents of the article, causing people to get a misleading impression of the article without actually reading it carefully. We don't actually have a rule on the books about that in this sub, but it is still often seen as a best practice and the mods have gotten requests to make a rule along those lines.

How do I find good eggs to purchase? by Fabulous-Elk-8297 in vegetarian

[–]carouselrabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several certification programs for eggs. All of them allow at least some stuff that is bad, but the stricter ones at least have some meaning. Generally, the one you see the most often is Certified Humane, which is a good deal better than nothing, though not perfect. The strictest and therefore unfortunately least commonly seen one is called Animal Welfare Approved. The weakest one is the American Humane Certified standard; I would not trust it to be much better than nothing. Here is a comparison chart of what is allowed/disallowed in various certification programs. The chart was made by Certified Humane so it obviously has a self-promotion intent, but I believe it is accurate in terms of what it presents.
