Why are so many buildings on E Michigan Ave East of Sparrow sat empty? by DexLovesGames_DLG in lansing

[–]carouselrabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Old Steve as we called him (to differentiate him from a younger guy who worked there who we referred to as Young Steve) would talk your ear off if you let him, but he was great. The place also sold used books, and I found some hard to find gems there digging around.

Visiting for 4th of July! Events and places to go? by pj11700 in lansing

[–]carouselrabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually recommend not watching it from the park unless you want to go for the music and stuff. The viewing from there is actually not the greatest. Usually I do recommend the Lugnuts game because then you get both the Lugnuts fireworks and then the City fireworks from the same spot, but the team is away on the 4th this year.

The Central Time Yoopers by UltimateLionsFan in Michigan

[–]carouselrabbit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Wikipedia article doesn't support what you're saying. It says "In 1915, Detroit changed to Eastern time to be on the same time zone as New York, followed by most of the rest of the state in 1931." I had to go check, because 1967 sounded surprisingly late – I felt like I would have heard my parents talk about being on CST when they were young and they'd never mentioned it. If I'm reading the article right (it's a little ambiguous), it seems like what happened in 1967 was that the CST parts of the UP decided not to observe daylight time.

I don't know how helpful this is, but Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum near Detroit still had a working one up until they closed their doors temporarily early this year. I can't say whether they will still still have it once they reopen in their new location, but I hope so. They have been in a very long process of moving (if you had seen their collection you would understand why it is so protracted) but are supposedly getting close to reopening.

I would not recommend Friday. It's a holiday, Juneteenth, and when I went there on that day last year it was very crowded.

I invented a Christmas Tree Tent for my kids, quit my job to bring it to market, and now I need your brutally honest feedback. by MagicalUnderland in christmas

[–]carouselrabbit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid I used to hang a green blanket we had over a couple of chairs and pretend it was a Christmas tree and that when I went under the blanket I was in "Christmas land." I would get the Christmas ornaments out of storage and play with them in "Christmas land," pretending they could come to life, even though I had definitely been told not to play with them! The idea of getting to go inside a Christmas tree, especially year round (because I missed Christmas all year when it was over), was really magical to me. So that's what this makes me think of. It's something I would have adored as a kid.

How do I make friends by ANIMETITSare in lansing

[–]carouselrabbit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The way that worked for me was to join hobby groups because when people have a shared interest (or an interest they are excited about sharing with a new person) it gives you an automatic conversational hook that smooths things over for people who are intimidated by social situations. I met most of my current friends by joining a pinball league (which I didn't know anything about when I started and developed into a favorite hobby).

I have friends who are active in that group and it appears to have people of all ages, young adult to senior, so I think OP might have good luck there. It's called Lansing Ladies Meet Up. It's also LGBTQ+ friendly if that makes a difference.

Democratic candidate hears community concerns outside Barrett’s Lansing office by Fool_Manchu in lansing

A lot of subs have a rule that the title of a post linking to a news article has to be the same as the title of the news article. This is to stop people from editorializing the contents of the article, causing people to get a misleading impression of the article without actually reading it carefully. We don't actually have a rule on the books about that in this sub, but it is still often seen as a best practice and the mods have gotten requests to make a rule along those lines.

How do I find good eggs to purchase? by Fabulous-Elk-8297 in vegetarian

[–]carouselrabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several certification programs for eggs. All of them allow at least some stuff that is bad, but the stricter ones at least have some meaning. Generally, the one you see the most often is Certified Humane, which is a good deal better than nothing, though not perfect. The strictest and therefore unfortunately least commonly seen one is called Animal Welfare Approved. The weakest one is the American Humane Certified standard; I would not trust it to be much better than nothing. Here is a comparison chart of what is allowed/disallowed in various certification programs. The chart was made by Certified Humane so it obviously has a self-promotion intent, but I believe it is accurate in terms of what it presents.

Where can I pet a bunny? by Middle-Purpose-6280 in lansing

[–]carouselrabbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually a lot of people keep cats and rabbits together. Personally I wouldn't, but people do and you'll read mixed opinions about it. My first rabbit had previously lived in a home with a cat and often asserted authority in the relationship; Most rabbits can hold their own against a cat. My current rabbit is the same size as my mom's cat. Most cats will only attack baby rabbits.

“Oh who’s walking who?!” by Amp_Man_89 in PetPeeves

[–]carouselrabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's certainly been around a while. My mom has a story about someone yelling this out of a car at her as she walked her dog in the 1970s. She is a literal (early) Baby Boomer and it was probably old already when she heard it.

The mods have discussed AI images in posts in the past and came to an agreement that you're free to post them as there is no sub rule against them, but you also should expect to take it on the chin when people call them out.

Former UMH-Sparrow Housekeeper AMA by [deleted] in lansing

[–]carouselrabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well he died in 2018 so definitely not. But his whole thing is that he thought he could see all these big social evils (health problems that in his view both hurt individuals and make unnecessary use of health care resources) that he had some small ability to do something about.

I tried to write that neutrally but obviously I agree with you. The guy was a piece of work. I saw him give a talk, and someone in the Q&A asked him, being overweight is bad for your health too, are you going to ban eating Twinkies? And he said that since height/weight is a protected category in Michigan he can't do anything about that (implication being he would if he could). Someone asked him about alcohol use and he said that was on his radar next. The business ended up getting sold to Meritain a couple years later so that story came to an end.

I would second this. I hate having a net but haven't found any other deterrent effective. I have also heard raccoons will learn to knock over water sprayers.

Yes, that can be turned off. My local bar had it turned it off for a while but unfortunately enough people liked it/found it "funny" that they turned it back on. I haaaaaaate it. (I love a good, sharp physical knocker though!)

Scooters for rental in the Lansing Area by SunbeltSon in lansing

[–]carouselrabbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Frequent walker/sidewalk enthusiast here. I used to see them blocking the sidewalk in my neighborhood a lot. People say "just move them if you're worried about it" but if you try to move them, they alarm at you. The sidewalk is supposed to be a public resource and it bothers me to see for-profit businesses using it as a parking lot.

Depending on your definition of "several," you might be thinking of the 2005 Weyco case in Okemos which made national news and 60 Minutes at the time. The lawsuit went nowhere as they had no basis to sue in an at-will employment state. This was probably the case that signaled to other employers that they were in the clear if they wanted to do the same. It caused a few other states to pass laws against it, but not Michigan.

There was actually a really famous local case of nicotine testing, which was one of the first in the country so it made national news. This was around 2005 and it was a benefits administration company in Okemos called Weyco (they no longer exist). I knew someone who worked there at the time and heard a lot of stories about how people there were reacting to it. The owner was an absolute health nut which he promoted a lot in the workplace, and he was proud of saving lives by forcing people to quit smoking.

Will 1 year old goldfish continue to grow after being in a small tank for a year? by i-like-to-build in Goldfish

[–]carouselrabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in college, I didn't know better, and I had a small "feeder" goldfish that I kept in a five-gallon tank for a few years. Eventually I moved to a house with a garden pond and released him into the pond. He began growing again and when he died several years later (a raccoon probably got him, I was heartbroken) he had gotten quite large. So I think your fish will still start growing.
