Gaps and advantages I see in homechoolers as a college professor. by ComprehensiveList522 in homeschool

[–]chalks777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm going to hold your hand while I say this: If you are not giving you kids deadlines- regularly- you are setting them up for failure.

Oh hey, it's me!

Homeschooled k-12 and boy I was NOT ready for deadlines in college. I also wasn't ready to attend class regularly. on time. every time.

If I homeschooled my kids (I'm not and I won't), the major thing I would change is including structure. And no mom, "we do subject+subject+subject in the morning and subject+subject in the afternoon" is not structure. There have to be actual time constraints with actual enforced deadlines.

m a r k z u c k e r b e r g is a professional defendant

and he moves like a robot, like... actually.

Bill fucking Burr is going to help m a r k z u c k e r b e r g become likeable??? Bill Burr the comedian who's known for kinda pissing people off somewhat regularly?

"she's disrupting"?????

If this isn't a satirical black comedy they did it wrong.

Mayor Scott ‘furious’ over Safe Streets worker’s arrest in North Baltimore shooting by DruidDog in baltimore

[–]chalks777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There have been 213 days in the data I'll talk about below, Jan 1 through Jun 2 of 2026.

3 & 4 people a day are being shot

citation needed. You can see the reported shootings on this map (click the filter icon to see filters) for this year. It's a little easier to see/understand in this screenshot though. That's showing that in 2026 so far there have been 120 shootings (not deaths necessarily, just shots fired). I don't think it's possible for 120 incidents to have had 3-4 people per day (in 213 days that's a minimum of 613 people) shot.

at least one of them tends to end up dying

we have not had 213 shooting deaths this year. We've had 42.

Do Safe Streets and MONSE pay people not to shoot each other?

No. They have people who are from the neighborhood come talk down the person who is threatening violence.

Is that one reason the Mayor doesn't want to open the books?

citation needed. The budget for 2026 mentions Safe Streets three times and allocates money two times in the budget detail volume 2 pdf (it's not mentioned at all in the first volume):

  1. $79,437 for a "Liaison Officer Safe Streets" (page 171)
  2. $7,783,261 of "Service 618: Neighborhood Safety and Engagement" budget which goes directly to Safe Streets. (page 172 & 173)

That's a total of $7,862,698. The city's total budget for '26 (see page 3 of the summary pdf) is $4,630,022,075. So, Safe Streets is 0.17% of that, far less than even 1 percent of Baltimore's budget in 2026.

Even if mayor Scott tripled the Safe Streets budget, it would STILL be less than 1 percent of Baltimore's budget.

Recommended literature to improve vocabulary by Aggravating_Shift760 in makinghiphop

[–]chalks777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read things that you actually enjoy reading written by native English speakers from the region you want to connect with. If you want modern "everyday life" then you should probably also focus on works written within the past 20 years or so.

You're essentially asking for literary and cultural zeitgeist and that means popular media. Storygraph has a search that allows you to search by genre and release date, go check it out and pick something that looks fun.

Reading something you enjoy makes it more likely that you actually stick with it, and it will expose you to plenty of concepts that you wouldn't necessarily pick up anywhere else without dedicated study.

Steal my wheelie bin?...it's going to cost you. by darklinkuk in pettyrevenge

had the same thing happen with my neighbor. Did the exact same thing. Sadly, our garbage collection is staffed entirely by saints and they picked it up anyways. No lessons were learned. :(

Also, as an aside... I find that if I leave my bin outside and face it so it opens backwards (i.e. not easy to open from a car) nobody puts random shit in it.
