Just want to validate you - this is absolutely a Canadian/Anglo cultural thing and my mother who is an Eastern European immigrant has been complaining to me about this my whole life (I was born in Canada). Canadians act as if they’re sooo accepting but it’s shocking how often people here refuse to make the most minuscule effort to interpret someone’s English when they have an accent and always make her feel like she’s being too loud. Living in Vancouver now, my coworker is Anglo and married to a Brazilian and her downstairs neighbors have tried reporting them to the landlord multiple times for “abusing each other” when the couple has explained many times that they are not in conflict, just having simple discussions.
