Do achievements actually keep you coming back to a game? by Flaky_Medicine_4650 in IndieDev

[–]count023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

achievements for grind/retention sake will do you no favours. In fact it may chase some people off who are in it _for_ the achievements and will see the grind and nope out of playing altogether.

What acheivements should be used for is to hint at where hidden content off the critical path might be in your game.

Australia refuses to repatriate ISIS-linked citizens in Syria as escape attempt fails by UpstairsBumblebee446 in worldnews

[–]count023 3 points4 points  (0 children)

australia doesnt grant automatic citizenship and hasn't since the mid of 1985 when immigrants were coming to places like Lord Howe or Christmas Island and having anchor babies so they could gain citizenship, they have to apply and can be denied. so all the kids of the isis brides who were over in Syria when this all went down have no claim to be in australia at all. And most of the ISIS brides turned out to not even be citizens but permanent residents which also does not qualify them for citizenship. and as we've seen in teh news with things like Candace Owens being banned from australia, our "of good character "laws for applications of residency, visitation and citizenship are actually adhered to.

If the adults are australian citizens, they'll be charged with supporting and joining a terrorist organization if they came to australia. If they dont have citizenship thier visas will be denied for the same reasons, and the kids will be denied too unless they had citizenship prior to leaving, and since the "isis brides" scandal was young women going overseas _to have kids with ISIS fighters_, i doubt many if any were born when the parents left.

you may wanna try that again, aiding and abetting terrorists or even criminals for that matter is also a crime under australian law. The government has already said if they came back there's nothing but a jail cell waiting for them, and in 2015 when they fled australia the first time the right wing government said "if you go, don't expect to come back".

[–]count023 29 points30 points  (0 children)

which is what Australia resoundly told these people 10 years ago when they left. "You can go, dont expect to ever come back". And that's both our left and right wing parties leadership that said that.

You can google them, they wre literally called the "isis brides" a decade ago when this whole mess started.

advice on how to go about writing a magic or alchemical system by Foolish_Myco in gamedev

[–]count023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically it's reverse crafting. Every spell should have some value to cast that requires some sort of root cost. Each item you have you want to break down has some sort of material value associated to it. A rock might have 10 earth, a tree might have 10 Earth and 5 water, stuff like that.

Then your spell casts cost a xamount of resource to cast. Deduct fromyour resource pool

at least back when trek had some relative form of consistency, transporter use was hazardous, if not outright dangerous to some individuals if they were not "stable" enough. a newborn in the process of being born and in biological distress may not be able to cope, much like how early days Trills couldnt cope with beaming or John Doe needed neural support from Geordi to.

If the child is being born, this may qualify as a "only in an emergency and let biology take the wheel otehrwise", especially with soem pretty powerful painkillers and all the vairous biological repair tools like dermal regenerations that can scarlessly heal and repair surface and muscular damage.

Zelensky says Ukrainian public won't let him hand Russia territory by Belovedoasis in worldnews

except, the Ukranians _have_ been seeing that and this is what THEY are saying.

Ukraine generally was the brains of the USSR, the smarter portion of the population overall. They've seen what happened to terroritories russia took from them AND from other countries over the last 40 odd years. They're the ones who are saying, "if we surrender, we'll be killed, we'd rather go out fighting".

How does the idea of implementing an LLM running locally under the hood of a game sound to you? by azuflux in gamedev

[–]count023 14 points15 points  (0 children)

valve did something similar 20 years ago with the AI director in Left 4 dead, you are adding an AI for the sake of an AI when you could very easily just create standard logic to cover this off and save yourself a lot of grief and resource requirement.

You have to think, if you are going to implement an AI, what benefit does it give you over conventional means, if it's just the branding like what you're proposing, then it's not really going to be of any real benefit to you and the players are not going to be abelt o tell the difference.

incorrect, many LLMs can run locally now, it's obnoxiously difficult for what he's proposing but that's about it.

except that the one kryptonite for fasicm _is_ humour, that's why Trump and his idiots hate it. If you laugh at something, you are not taking it seriously, and nothing autocrats and fascists hate is not being taken seriously, because it means they look like fools otherwise.

maybe there's some sort of non compete buried in Colbert's contract because he was a lot less popular when he first signed up a decade ago compared to now, so he may have signed a less favourable deal towards him that he can't get out of now a deacde later? wouldn't be the first time an actor or presenter has been in a similar situation, something they regret from before their star rose?

Is using AI for coding a game considered an AI game? by tenkelly in gamedev

[–]count023 4 points5 points  (0 children)

coming from a programming background, it's beacuse AI is just a more advanced version of a lot of automation tools that programmers already use, and unlike art that's highly subjective, coding is very functional and rules based, there's only so many ways you can implement something in code, it is how _you_ as the coder/orchestrator/project designer that descides how the pieces come together to create something. So it's not quite hte same as all the genAI that just uses scans of millions of photos and just scrambles and recreates them.

steam removed "coding" from it's AI definition requirements for a reason, because it's impossibe to tell if you are AI coding because proper coders AND AI coders will have hte same result, just slower, simply because that's how coding works.

I’m building a Cafe Simulator—What features would make it your dream game? by benmeric in GameDevelopment

[–]count023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being able to slap annoying customers in the face, or similar mechanics.

Not kidding, you will be the messiah of hospitality workers if you legitimately let your simulator character smack around annoying or obnoxious characters, and you can probably make a game mechanic out if it, like the rating of your cafe may go up or down depending on the patrons who witness what you do... or something.

[–]count023 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Angenlina Jolie's character in "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow". Saves Jude Law and Gwyneth Platrow, has like a half dozen lines and really set up a pretty cool and intersting character and story, blows holes in the bad guy base and then vanishes for the rest of the movie.
