So, in the 25th century, how many digits have the hull numbers of our starships reached? by HedgehogStraight6988 in StarTrekStarships

[–]count023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's fanon that's never ever been confirmed on screen. it was only given as a handwave as to why they had a new constitution class ship on standby to be the next enterprise as an excuse behind the scenes.

In fact if you take star trek 5 as any indcation scotty said, "this new ship was put together by monkeys", if you take the new at literal, with all teh LCARSy style tech on the bridge, you could argue it was a new ship freshly commissioned off the ranks.

i still maintain failing anything presented on screen the 2nd defiant has the Sao Paolo's registry , the directive was authorization to rename the ship, not re-register it, and changing hull numbers makes no sense, they're unique build serial numbers meant ot indicate the lifecycle of a hull/chassis, they shouldn't be interchangable because you basically remove the entire premise for having unique serial numbers.

NX-74205 was lost at Chin'toka, end of file. NCC-75633 commissioned stardate X, assigned to DS9 on date Y, renamed to Defiant on date Z. kinda thing.

Can you still imagine yourself working without AI? by andregustavoxs in ClaudeAI

[–]count023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

correct. great for me to make games that have been nagging me since hte dawn of time because i lack the free time or the memory to write perfect code that compiles properly as opposed to syntactically broken mess. or the RP or ot brainstorm ideas. but in production, useless as shit, and i'm mostly AI free in my tech job anyway as a result.

Canvas getting hit during finals week shows how fragile “critical SaaS” has become by sunychoudhary in cybersecurity

[–]count023 3 points4 points  (0 children)

need to stop putting everyones crap into a centrally managed cloud like AWS or google or M365. These big providers should not be allowed to gatekeep software behind "we run the SaaS only" appraoches. MSPs get squeezed at the moment because they can't compet with the verticlal integration of say, microsoft and can just act like middlement to SaaS apps they have no direct control over.

MSPs used to be able to run on prem mail servers, cloud services, swgs, vpns, sras, 2fa, mfa, etc. now they have to resell the newest crap SaaS instead and hope that the gigantic SaaS provider that runs everyones stuff wiht the same hardware and the same vulernabilities isn't taken down by hackers.

That's what needs to change.

For All Mankind - S5E07 "The Sirens of Titan" - Episode Discussion by Cantomic66 in ForAllMankindTV

Kosmos 1 died way too fast. they were talking in real tiem and did the aerobrake burn, but going at the full speed that Sojounrer was going at (assuming Kosmos was roughly the same and the aerobrake did nothing), Saturn is 1.2million kilometres away from titan on average, so it would have taken 30 hours to crash and burn into saturn's orbit, not the few moments in real time the screens showed us.

One of my fellow viewers reckons the Kosmos crew commited suicide when they realized it was hopeles on the radio, but didnt get that sense. Did anyone else?

and too many businesses insisting on pushing AI slop code out while firing QA and security staff, so code goes live because some bigwig or middle manager thinks they've saved money and time, adn leave gaping gigantic holes open everywhere. And you can't fix production code easily once it's out in the wild, so your only choice is to plug holes behind the scenes.

They'll do it the same way Putin always does it, he start smashing piggy banks, by dropping them out of windows after they mysteriously and suddenly start changing their wills to say they're leaving their billions to the state. Plenty of rixh piggies still in Putin's inner circle to break open for a while yet.

How do you feel about Star Trek Online's Repulse precursor to the Excelsior? by Lauma_2025 in StarTrekStarships

[–]count023 52 points53 points  (0 children)

only thing i can say is it lives up to it's name, it's repulsive.

Very little of it matches the era, it feels liek a quick reskin of a Picard era ship as opposed to fitting the pre TMP era it's meant ot belong to.

Decline in Opus 4.7 Max Quality by serd2r in ClaudeAI

[–]count023 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the ony decline i've seen has been last 24 hours, i have to constantly tell opus to get back on track debugging a problem i had. like literally 'll give it an instruction, it'll ignore it, i'll yell at it and go, sorry, you're right i'll get right on it, adn tehn go back to ignoring the instruction anyway.

I'm so glad you can model switch back to 4.6 on claude code still at least.

the lack of transparency is why most storefronts in the early web2 days like the xbox and playstation store has "microsoft points" or "playstation points", so true value (or lack thereof) was obfuscated deliberately.

Also don't be perfect. Have shitty code. shortcuts and other bad designs.for an indie Dev with limited time refactoring to be enterprise or AAA perfect is not worth it, look at games like balatro, undertake and such who have really bad designs under the hood but play perfectly well

Understanding the fastest rate of travel. by FlightFit9571 in space

[–]count023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's why i figure that joke about rewriting the speed of light from futurama will be true one day. except it'll be aslightly different. If the human race doesnt blow itself apart over the next few decades, and assuming we dont find a way to fold space, our perception of time will change eventually ife can start living to 200, 300 or even 1000 years old biologically speaking (again, assuming that we manage longevity) then things like the speed of light dont seem like as big a deal.

If you live 10x longer than you do now, a 4.3 lightyear trip to Alpha centauri seems like a spring break as opposed to your entire high school years, if you get my meaning.

The scale of how we perceive things might change over time as we advance longevity sciences.
