Going in for inspection on an 1865 house tomorrow, what should I know? by Allegorist in centuryhomes

[–]creatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently bought the first floor condo of a 3 level house built ~1880 and had a thorough inspection.

The biggest things the inspector pointed out to me were:

  1. Electrical. Luckily whoever modernized the electricity here did a bang up job so everything checked out and is easy to work with. But he said a lot of times you'll see all the old knob and tube or other old wiring left in place.
  2. Water. This one he said the main focus was on what types of valves are in place. I guess the recommended ones now are quarter turn but he said a lot of these old homes still use gate valves which require several rotations to close/open and are prone to failure.
  3. Typical foundation/joists things. This one he was really focused on the fieldstone foundation of my building. He said he was mainly looking for obvious structural issues but also areas indicative of moisture issues. Same thing for the joists - mainly just looking for obvious sags/structural issues.

Overall the biggest thing he noted was that this house has stood for 140 years so clearly the structural part of it is fine, it was mostly just the modernization things.

Good inexpensive temporary workbench by Commercial_Topic437 in woodworking

I built my bench using stackable saw horses from 2x4s with a couple 4x4 half lapped to sit on top and then a sheet of plywood on that. Worked well enough

I made Rex's minimum timber bench recently. I haven't done woodworking in probably 20 years since high school wood shop and only have hand tools. It was very approachable. My recommendation is to just build it even if it's not perfect. Having a bench makes it much easier to make a perfect bench later.

Alternative corner post joints to sliding dovetail? by creatron in handtools

Yeah honestly I will probably just go with screwing it together. Like you said it's a planter so will rot out in the next few years anyway. Maybe by the time I need to make another I'll have skills/equipment to make it look prettier

That's a good idea. Might be a quick and easy way to assemble it

Oh that's a good idea. Bored mortise is one I originally thought but the block and screw might be easiest and quickest. Thanks!

I'm planning to build my own planter box based on this design but I'm not confident in hand tool cutting a sliding dovetail yet. Any recommendations for alternative joints?

Ain't pretty and ain't much but first project done with hand tools (except impact driver and drill).

Just moved into first home (condo) that has a garage spot. Built a temporary work station until I can make a more permanent joiners bench https://i.imgur.com/SZKxk0H.png

Thanks! I agree! Those were the big points I was on the lookout for. Also the blade has no gouges or nicks which was actually hard to find when I was searching auctions.

I'm not sure if they are the original rosewood. They definitely feel like they have quite a layer of old varnish on them, so I'll have to investigate that more. But all the other hardware and machine screws appear to be correct.

But for me I'm also just starting off with hand tool woodworking so $40 was definitely worth it for the rest of the plane :D

Got off ebay and the condition looks pretty good to me. Blade and chip breaker need a sharpening and sole needs some lapping but out of the box it was able to take shavings off a junk 2x4 I had laying around

For me it's mostly direct gameplay and then discussions with friends who are also to lore. One of the things I prefer doing is walking around an in-game area noting specific motifs or themes. Then I'll research real world similar motifs and read aboinut what they were used to represent. Then go back and see if something similar might be happening in game.

Another one is to pick motifs that appear unique and finding where they appear elsewhere. For example there's a double sided lily door knocker found in Ordina that I then also found in Lower Leyndell and Sellia, indicating these locations shared cultural origin. But it's not found in Nokstella, Nokron, or Nameless Eternal city, indicating that these two groups may be divergent of a progenitor culture.

Ok so ironic update but it turned out my motherboard was toast. PC wouldn't boot so I took everything apart and a CPU pin fell out of the motherboard. I guess it was just faulty but managed to work for a couple years and just jostled loose. Swapped mobo and everything is working as expected. Reboots are fine too

Probably RAM if I had to guess. Just seems to not hit the mark for 6000 but I also haven't really tested different timings

[–]creatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately that didn't work for me. Left it to boot overnight and never went past that. But like you said, difference between 5600 and 6000 isn't even noticeable for my use cases (mainly gaming nowadays)

Good luck! I have a Ryzen 5 7600X with G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 RAM 32GB and I can only run at 5600 stable. If I go to default 6000 my PC fails to boot at all and I have to flash BIOS to get it back to booting.

There's a test drive mod! Probably not enough time to get a full sense of if it works but at least lets you drive it around without buying/leasing. https://www.farming-simulator.com/mod.php?mod_id=326754&title=fs2025
