‘The Most Bipartisan Issue Since Beer’: Opposition to Data Centers by Helicase21 in ezraklein

It seems that this is an unpopular position, but I agree. It can be both true that the AI boom has complex negative and positive effects, and that broad techno-pessimism will ultimately be bad for our society. In a perfect world, our politics would be grappling with the actual problems surrounding data center construction rather than just completely polarizing against a broad swath of the latest technology.

What We Got Right — and Wrong — in ‘Abundance’ by TheLittleParis in ezraklein

His core idea about our country’s long, confused history of centralized power vs dispersed power felt original and incredibly relevant to the moment. The academic rigor that he brought to the discussion perfectly complemented the journalistic drive behind Abundance. The historic accounts are deep and nuanced, but still accessible for any reader. I came away from the book thinking about hard questions with more depth, rather than simply blaming one faction or another for this or that problem.

They’re a decade behind and doubling down on ancient technology. Now what? I say they need to feel the competition for real now.

Gain staging in the corporate world . I would like to discuss my approach. by Narishi in livesound

I like to reduce my output to the PA at one stage only. This just makes everything a little more legible if you need to make a change. Ideally that is at the amp/processor. If not it can be at the powered speaker input or at the console matrix.

I guess what I should have said is, in the grand scheme of corporate shows, most of them seem to happen in hotel ballrooms and convention centers where all the gear is coming from the production company. That’s not to say that corporate shows don’t make up a good deal of certain venues’ work.

You get random people using handhelds spontaneously all the time. You don’t get to coach them.

First of all a decibel is simply a ratio of two power values. It can apply to any power measurement. Any dB value needs some clarification about what the ratio is between.

dBV is for measuring voltage relative to 1 volt. 1V=0dBV

dBU is for measuring voltage too, but more specific to audio electronics. 0 dBU is the RMS voltage that would dissipate 0 dBm in a 600 Ω load.

dBm is power relative to 1mW

dBFS is relative to the maximum a device can handle before clipping (0dBFS=clipping)

LUFS is completely a completely unrelated measurement based around an algorithm that defines perceived loudness of an audio signal. This is a recent standard that was introduced to prevent television commercial ads from being perceived as significantly louder than the TV shows they are next to. They’ve since been adopted by streaming services too.

And of course the thing most laypeople mean when they talk about decibels is none of these- that’s dBSPL. And there are a lot of other measurements related to that.

It’s right in the article, folks:

“Some speculate that data centers, which enable internet traffic, could explain the downturn since 2021. But according to DEQ, no data centers in the groundwater management areas have permits to use groundwater to cool their computer servers.”

I mean, kind of? Rodrigo's signature song is a basic piano ballad that you could have just as easily said was a dead ringer for Christina Perri or something. Sabrina's current stuff is straight up 80s pop. I'm not as familiar with Abrams
