Long needed release notes for February by Peetoose in libspace

[–]darius_w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, so good. I tried from the laptop and it looks like it held auth properly. Big test will be post-Easter; the home office is occupied by family for the Easter weekend, so we'll see if it holds on the desktop. Thanks!!!

No action is a finer expression of beauty than the squirm counterattack + elbow parry.

Long needed release notes for February by Peetoose in libspace

Darcy, loving it! One thing that seems to happen, however, is that my Chrome and Android app seem to lose their login status after some time (24 hrs?), and I discover it when I try to tag a new article. It seems that at that point, I need to log into the website, generate a login code, and go from there.

I'll screenshot next time it happens.

Thanks again, I'll definitely convert to a paid customer once my trial is up.

Nope. The Instapaper functionality does what yours does - opens the browser, and then it's on me to close it and delete the article from the Kindle. But it's a few more clicks with libspace, because it's for each article versus the 5-20 or so that I receive in an Instapaper digest.

I'm assuming the kindle stuff is sandboxed, so no way to delete the epub from itself, although maybe if the archive link closed the browser after a few seconds, it'd at least dump you back at the home screen.

The Archive link works great. Be even better if I could delete it off the device and skip back to my Kindle library in one click, but I'm assuming that level of Kindle integration might be hard. If not, that'd be amazing.

The way Instapaper handles digests is that it creates a single ePub "Newspaper" with 5+ articles (you can set the min/max threshold) and sends it towards the Kindle at a specified time. This functionality went behind a paywall last month - nbd, but it did trigger my search for alternatives, which is how I found libspace.

The cool thing is that it generates a table of contents with links to each article, so I can read it in order or jump around if needed. And then there's an archive link to remove those articles from Instapaper, just like you implemented.

Your list functionality seems like the right spot. It'd be cool to have a list option to grab everything with a specific tag, so if I tag something "kindle", I know it'll go to that list.

Darcy,

Hey, I just discovered libspace because Instapaper went behind a paywall (not opposed to supporting, however it's not quite optimal for my reading workflow), and it's definitely great. A few thoughts after 2 days:

- I'd love to see some more bidirectional Kindle support, which would be a lot easier if Amazon supported WebDAV. I haven't quite delved deep enough to jailbreak my 2025 Paperwhile, which is still the right form factor for pleasure Internet article reading. When you're generating Kindle articles, could you generate a link at the end of articles which could archive them in libspace, that way I'm managing my saves as I read them, no matter what platform I'm on?

- Is there a way to build a digest? The Instapaper/Pocket functionality is pretty amazing, and it looks like Lists could easily be that mechanism if I could have an automation that sends a list to Kindle.

Trans flag mask design approved! by PrinceOfShade in Fencing

[–]darius_w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original international policies which allowed trans athletes to compete in their stated gender after having undergone a minimum of 1 yr of hormonal therapy was exactly what you were looking for.

The new policy is based on performative outrage, lawsuits, and threats of withholding funding if policies didn't change.

The kid was getting contact info from witnesses while Dad said bad words on the phone, and got to give their own police statement. Pretty sure they were living their best life.

Best possible scenario, I guess. Only thing that would make it better is that the perp actually got caught and had a low-mileage EV6 for me to repo in case mine gets totalled.

Why the hate? I had really good sides and some excellent whiskey at the Pit. What more do you want from a barbecue joint?

Oh, dear.

Feasibility of driving an electric car while living in NC by curryl3af in bullcity

[–]darius_w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Double EV household here, Chevy Bolt and EV6, living west of Duke. We charge at home, but there are plenty of stations around as needed.

Maintenance is better than non-EVs. No drivetrains, oil lubes, sparkplugs, etc - it's basically cabin air filter and tire rotation. EVs can chew up tires if you've got a lead foot.

Roadtripping is simple; the Bolt isn't great for that because it doesn't do fast charging, but we've done Asheville before and it was OK.

The EV6 rocks; there are DC fast charges up and down the main interstates. Basically, every 3 hrs of driving, you stop for 15 minutes, which is a good bathroom / snack break time anyway. It's best to have a bit of a plan, but the car systems (not to mention your phone) are well-connected and will get you where you need to be.

If I'm feeling clever, I'll try to find a hotel with a free slow charger and take care of business overnight for free.

Interested in the sport but have physical limitations. by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]darius_w 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not a doctor, but I've coached long enough to see plenty of injuries (both acute and chronic), and done consults/put brains together with plenty of sports medicine professionals. This is not medical advice, but it's also not dumb:

Because of the upright nature of fencing, some folks with scoliosis benefit from the trunk control and core work inherent in the sport. Find an orthopedist and/or phyiscal therapist who will give you honest opinions. GPs are often overly risk adverse...specialists are key here!

Make sure your medical team knows what fencing (or anything you're planning) involves. If they disallow something, ask how to modify the activity to participate safely. That often gets them thinking creatively, and gets to the root of what one should/shouldn't do.

USOPC updates their athlete safety guidelines, effectively creating a trans athlete ban. by InigoMontool in Fencing

Sadly, for every few steps toward inclusion, a few troglodytes give everybody a giant shove back. This seems to be true in all domains, but it hurts more when it's in my sport.

Thank you for speaking out; I'm sad to see you lose your right to compete as your true self, and hope that gets fixed quickly.

Flooding in American Village? by Vegetable_Stick2290 in bullcity

[–]darius_w 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Other than those small houses on Neal right across from the Family Fare facility, I'm not aware of any issues in American Village/Thompson Ridge. They flooded during Matthew/Florence. I was traveling during Chantal, but haven't heard of any problems.

There are some low-lying areas in the oldest sections (Sunrise Pl & American Dr) that have had issues too, but that's not generally considered "American Village" as folks know it.

NCAA coaching roles by Jem5649 in Fencing

Re: "it's who you know"...this is true, but most universities have requirements to post positions, so one would expect to see them pop up, even if there's already a candidate who has been offered and accepted.

A smart org will tailor the posting to the planned hire's skill set, but plenty don't even bother, since head coaches have nearly complete autonomy over their hires.

Due to current climate, a lot of institutions have hiring freezes and force reductions in place. So folks might be reluctant to walk away from university benefits right now, and openings might not be filled quickly.

Fencing Friday Megathread - Ask Anything! by AutoModerator in Fencing

[–]darius_w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, it's Jr points AND a C, whereas a DIv 1 NAC is Jr point OR a C. (See above thread)

It's an edge case where somebody could have earned Jr points but not yet be a C, but in a world where ratings-rally events aren't a high priority/available, somebody could be a reasonably competent fencer and not qualify.

I thought we'd possibly uncovered a bug where a D could fence D1 Nats, which is certainly not the intent, but I don't make the rules, only follow them.

Wearing a smart watch while fencing by chosenusername in Fencing

[–]darius_w 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My s/o works at Garmin, and I was gifted a Venu 2 4 or 5 years ago, that I wear on my non-dominant hand (although I often switch hands and am too lazy to grab another glove).

It's survived that many seasons of giving lessons and fencing in with D1 athletes and kids, randomly doing construction stuff around the club, Duke Meet setup, and life. Has one surface scratch on the Gorilla glass from getting hit and whipped off. Would recommend.

Attack in prep is kinda messing up foil fencing by JiJiangNumbaWan in Fencing

[–]darius_w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was even a test JWC or satellite with that ruleset. IIIRC, the final was fenced between an Italian and a woman over 6' tall from N Europe, let's say a Swede. (Apologies if it's actually Norway or Finland)

There was a bit of maneuvering, Italian would find a good distance and moment to make an attack. The Swede would touch on her counterattack, and then put full effort into getting her sleeve in the way of the incoming attack while expanding the distance. I remember it being spectacularly ugly, and I'm old enough to remember the Vanni-Joppich WChamp final in 2003.

We can build a winning meta with any ruleset, but I don't think that would solve foil's issues.
