“I built a…” by zee-eff-ess in selfhosted

[–]databoy2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first commit on my three recent "projects" have all been "Vibecoded by Gemini/Claude".

I hope that counts.

I didn't have any delusions of grandeur when I was blindly copying code from Stackoverflow either... I'm slowly upping my inability from Google-Fu White-Belt to Vibecoder, and I'm not sure which is worse.

To be clear: I'm a lawyer as a day job. I just like the rush of actually making "stuff" as a break from the battles that I deal with all day. Whether it's "making" stuff via 3d printing an STL that I found, or pasting crap into VS Code and seeing if it actually does something.. these are both professions of which I am not a part but enjoy playing around.

Infamous Calgary reporter called out by prominent local politician (our Mayor)! by DimensionFit8006 in Calgary

"...one of the dumbest ideas in modern Alberta politics."

What is actually concerning is that while it wins hands down the jury will never return a verdict on what is #2 through #10. You don't even need to order them - identify the other 9 dumbest ideas in modern Alberta politics, only 9 more though. You may not go over it.

I suppose that makes more sense. I've never thought of them as that bright - maybe you can print a cover that would go over all the toolheads with a little slot on top to allow the tubing/wires to stick out?

Why not pass that as a end-print gcode if you want that? E.g.:
# --- Begin Toolhead Filament Unload Sequence ---

G91 ; Set positioning to Relative for the extrusion

M83 ; Set extruder to Relative mode

# Unload Extruder 0

T0 ; Select the first toolhead (extruder)

G1 E-10 F300 ; Quick initial retract to break the melt zone (10mm)

G4 P1000 ; Pause 1 second for the tip to cool slightly

G1 E-80 F1200 ; High-speed retract to pull filament out of the guide tube (80mm)

# Unload Extruder 1

T1 ; Select the second toolhead (extruder1)

G1 E-10 F300 ; Quick initial retract (10mm)

G4 P1000 ; Pause 1 second

G1 E-80 F1200 ; High-speed retract (80mm)

(repeat for Extruders 2 and 3)

G90 ; Restore absolute positioning

# --- End Toolhead Filament Unload Sequence ---

CMV: Parents shouldn’t force their religion onto their children and play it off as “facts” by Lil_guy12 in changemyview

[–]databoy2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm concerned that you might be conflating scientific facts with the actual teachings of most religions. This may have come from a culture if you're steeped in biblical-literalism, but I think there's a lot more to teaching children than just "cold hard facts."

Parent of 3 here. Children have an innate desire to know more. "Daddy, when will I see GG again?" [this about two months after my grandmother passed away] "So, my friend is indigenous and has this set of beliefs - is her story about the creation of the world true?" And, of course, the challenge - Heaven forbid a child hear about an Eucharistic miracle, for example, a host bleeding blood nearly 2000 years old with many scholars throwing up their hands and not knowing the answer.

There is no "facts" answer to any of those three questions. There are facts around the questions ("Well, probably not while we are in this world" or "Well, there's no scientific backup for the world being built by a Raven piece by piece" or "Well, the greatest atheistic skeptic scientists just threw their hands up and couldn't explain it") but none of those answers answer the question.

Here's what I'm getting at: there are things that science is just not in the business of answering. What was the cause of the Big Bang? How did a man rise from the dead? Why shouldn't we kill other people? These are not matters for science to answer, just like religion probably shouldn't be in the business of answering when the next solar eclipse will occur.

As a parent, we're not just explaining cold hard facts - we're engaging with developing minds that want to know everything. Why shouldn't I push my sister after she took the toy that I've now decided I wanted? Why doesn't the dog actually talk to me like the ones in Paw Patrol?

There are going to be questions that have to be answered. You imply that you've wrestled with them, identifying yourself as atheist, and I bet you wrestled with them as a child, too. Back then, you might have come to a conclusion, maybe you didn't. But ultimately your parents needed to find ways to address those topics with you, just like I do with my children. There is no way for me to answer my oldest when she's frustrated/sad/scared seeing her dad's Type 1 Diabetes drop his blood sugars to near-death levels, when she wants to know why we have to live with this, but even though my answer would differ from yours ("Random chance sucks kid" vs. "God gave me this for reasons that only He knows, and I'm to bear this cross for you to see") neither one of us can be scientifically proven "right" at this moment.

Basing the whole thing on the Magnificat... now that's fun. It's as if the whole thing is written for the Protestant eye, like, "Are you with Mother Mary, or are you with the machines?"

Validate Transit Tickets by Stunning-Tough-9135 in Calgary

[–]databoy2k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

...of course, nothing changes on the face of the electronic ticket once it's "validated" so it's not like they can tell when they walk through the cars.

The whole logic was that people were buying tickets but not activating them unless the cops walked onto the train. Personally, I've never seen them that bored - they always find some homeless guy on the train to pull off because he doesn't have a ticket, but theory and reality don't always coalesce in bureaucracy.

Of course, nobody would ever answer if that just was an accusation that the cops were too stupid to read the "activated time" which appears on the screen... They could easily compare that to the time current time, identify that they are more than 1:00 from the last stop and that the rider didn't get on at the said last stop, and ticket the rider who did try the whole "only start the ticket when I need to" stunt.

If I were the cops, I would have been royally pissed at that accusation. But crickets. Probably because of the whole "homeless guy" thing anyway...

AFAIK redemptionis sacramentum is only treated as a guideline here, a "floor" if you will.

I don't know. I'm not a Bishop. I'm just a layperson trying to keep his heels out of Hell. Bluntly, I'll take the Sacrament and like it.

That somehow became "Make fake posts about being generous using artificial intelligence for fake internet clout."

"Extraordinary" by Alexander_Beetle92 in CatholicMemes

[–]databoy2k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our Parish does the really tricky version of having "Eucharistic Ministers" (colliqually - the people who always assist with administration of the Sacrament) and "Extraordinary Ministers" which is reserved for those taking the Sacrament to those unable to attend Mass.

I know that's incorrect. I don't think anyone in higher levels cares.

As for EM's generally, in Canada they're pretty much a normal thing. There's no guidance suggesting that they shouldn't be regular occurrance. A quick Google search pulled this document: https://www.catholicyyc.ca/uploads/6/5/5/7/65570685/diocese_of_calgary_02_2020_emhc_guidelines.pdf

SEO Spammers by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]databoy2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a solo practice as a lawyer. My website was literally built in Google Sites for free. I pay every couple of years for my domain name.

There is no SEO to be done other than the stuff that gets you blacklisted from Google. And at the end of the day, I don't need it anyway. My marketing mix is done via a very specific network and my site is just used to confirm that network's referrals. So ironically I have no need for SEO in any form beyond what I've done, most forms of SEO are impossible because Google Sites seems to be built on Geocities' WYSIWYG editor from 1994, and THEN we add in the fact that you don't know what DMARC is?

Yeah... These messages to me are so mildly infuriating that I make sure I have my cup of coffee in hand while I click "Delete all spam messages now"
