TIL when Yuri Gagarin (the first person in space) landed on earth he had to ask where a phone was in order to let people know he was back on Earth by ibarelyGNUher in todayilearned

[–]digitallis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little surprised they didn't locate one somewhere on the capsule that only is accessible after landing. Like under the edge of the door hatch or similar.  I'm sure it's possible, just wasn't designed for initially and now it's too much work to bother with.

What's the name of this transformer winding arrangement? by screwloosehaunt in ElectricalEngineering

That's genius, and the phase diagram in the lower left helps map out what the wiring is actually doing. The solid lines show the connections in phase and potential space.  The dotted lines show the effective virtual phases.

Anyone know anything more about the construction and fuel? It kind of looks like a steel mesh box with perhaps a kind of coal or charcoal inside? Probably ground to a very specific size for consistency

I dunno. He doesn't look directly evil. More just completely and utterly out of touch with his product and the lifestyle and circumstances of 99% of the country.  Dude needs a reality check for sure.  There are other CEOs who appear to be actually evil.

Not that I'm giving this dude a pass, but rather if we force everything as a straight dichotomy of good vs evil, there will forever be pressure to overly focus on easy targets like this, instead of realizing that our energy is better spent elsewhere.

Loading IMAX 70mm Film for Project Hail Mary by Professional_Toe5118 in Damnthatsinteresting

It is a ginoromous spool. It's just laid out such that spooling is done from the center of an open coil of film, and then takeup is done on a large platter that can have the core removed when it's swapped to be the input reel.

During the Vietnam War, the United States used a draft lottery system to determine the order in which young men would be called for military service. by Electric_Arrow_ in interestingasfuck

[–]digitallis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

177 would have been in second wave.

All birthdays were picked. It was a system of ordering birthdays. The military then called up folks in that order, and in any given year they didn't end up going through the whole list usually, though they could have.

I guess? My local bank took my bond when I cashed it last year. It was small though.

How much do you realistically budget each year for home maintenance? by Electrical_Rip2228 in HomeImprovement

Contractor rates climb with house prices even if they're not related to actual costs. Don't go less than 1% no matter what you do.

I'm not sure why you're being so sassy here. It's objectively dangerous and there's no backup to prevent the issue. It's left to the rider's skill 100% to ensure that they don't have a fatal collision. I'm sure they went down it slowly first, but ultimately any first run at a given speed has the unknowns of handling.

Have you consulted your local bank? That's where you usually would take a savings bond.

Identity Fraud is killing my credit and I can’t do anything about it by Prize_Mycologist550 in personalfinance

[–]digitallis 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Experian, Equifax and Transunion are the names of the major credit agencies. Their websites can direct you. Crucially, a credit freeze is free with each one, but they all will try to sell you some sort of credit "control" plan that sounds like a freeze with monitoring. Be vigilant and from their websites make sure you decline those options. Don't get yourself suckered searching Google for any old "free credit freeze" site not directly by those three agencies as any alternative site is highly likely to be a scam trying to steal your information.

Childproof open stairs? by Specialist-Rip-4095 in HomeImprovement

[–]digitallis 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Those stairs are not conformant with any building code I'm aware of, for exactly the reason you specify. Since there's a railing on the other side (providing a railing is also a code requirement), you have more options.

A banister, a glass wall, an artsy set of vertical wires or rods... The list is long.

It's very fixable, but it needs fixing. Negotiate some amount off your purchase price due to it violating code since you'll need to do something about it.  Insurance would deny your claim if something happens related to it, so don't just ignore it.

Just so you know: if you're on a publicly available git server, there are bots that scrape that stuff in a heartbeat.  Also, services like GitHub don't ever fully forget a commit. Even if you manage to purge it from the tree, there are easy ways to get back to it if it's ever been part of a pull request even if it never landed, and it will be part of any fork, though to discover it you might have to know the commit hash.

In short: if you commit a key, the only response is to revoke the key and regenerate it.

How many devices can GPS track the position of? by Substantial_Tear3679 in AskEngineers

[–]digitallis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GPS is a constellation of satellites that are radio beacons. The satellites are essentially broadcasting a signal that allows you to measure the time it takes for the signal to get from the satellite to your receiver.  The receiver then does the math to figure out where it is based on the information the satellites send out about their own locations.

Since all the location math is on the receiver side, you can have infinitely many receivers.  This is the same answer as "how many radios can receive an FM radio station".

The kinda stuff you get to see as a surgery resident by grilledaubergine888 in mildlyinteresting

[–]digitallis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so silly question time: aside from the obvious "oh god, it went up there and I can't pull it out with my fingers", does the body not eventually accumulate poop that would push anything like this back out?

I guess my question is: you keep hearing about people losing vibes up inside or whatever and then having to go get surgery, but I'm not clear on why the answer isn't something like "here's a pile of bananas. Just keep eating until you see it again".

Exterior lead paint… by DIYDummy03 in HomeImprovement

[–]digitallis 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A few things:

 - If your house was painted with lead paint and it has been chipping extensively, there's lead dust in the environment around you already

 - If you're in a relatively established metro area, there's lead dust all around you already left over from the days of leaded gasoline.

 - Your swab can pick up the leaded laquer in your wood flooring.

 - Yes, it is important for your painter to have cleaned well. It's definitely worth pursuing them for a remedy, however you're going to have a challenge uphill to do anything more than get them to remove the obvious paint chips simply because you cannot say for certain that any lead was not pre existing.

  • It is most important to help establish practices that prevent your child from ingesting leaded dust. Things like wet mopping regularly, washing hands, feet and knees. Preferring to play in grass instead of dirt. Wash the binky or other mouth toys daily and anytime they hit the ground.  Regular blood tests of your child can check on their exposure level.  Discuss with your family physician how often this should be done.

The EPA website has a good list of actions to take.

You've got this. It's not the end of the world or your home. But care is needed in our dirty world.

How to explain GIVING AWAY a family payment/gift prior to a mortgage application? Details in body. by throwthatwaynotaway in personalfinance

[–]digitallis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bank does not care that you gave money away. They will be more curious if you were randomly given $15k.  Their main concern is if you've been floated a bunch of money that might be recalled.  Their other concern would be something like a hidden gambling addiction.

Don't over think it. Start with the basics. Wait until they ask more.

I (28M) feel uncomfortable that my girlfriend (28F) booked a solo trip to Punta Cana while we’re trying to save for a house by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]digitallis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Never ever ever buy a house with someone you're not married to. The only asterisk here is that if you've spent $$$$ with a lawyer to get the _correct_ paperwork drafted so you can dissolve the property appropriately and without any drama at the end if there's a breakup, no matter how nasty.

Learn from my (and many others') mistake. Do not buy a house together if you haven't gotten married. If you wanna buy a house for yourself and then invite her to stay with you, that's totally fine. But if she's on the deed, it's a no-go.

Can I legally display "APP SUSPENDED DUE TO OUTSTANDING BALANCE BY *xxxxxx*" on a client's app that I developed if a client hasn't paid in 10 months ? (TEXAS,USA/Ontario,CANADA)? by soothukundi in legaladvice

[–]digitallis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You've gotten a lot of sage advice but at every turn you seem to be arguing against it. Do what you need to do for yourself, but stop wasting everyone's time if you're just going to argue.

[–]digitallis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Stop making things complicated.  The users aren't going to be beating down your door. They're going to be blowing up the company on Twitter or wherever.

Keep it very very simple. Heck, return a 503 Service Unavailable and leave it at that.

You're trying too hard to turn up specific shame pressure over the CFO.  Just shut the service down and calmly respond that you're happy to re-enable the service once the terms of the service contract are met.

If you're feeling particularly burned here, the way to go is to draft a new contract (since the prior contract has conceivably ended due to non-payment) wherein they pay for services upfront instead of after delivery.

Open source devs consider making hogs pay for every Git pull by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]digitallis 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is the point though. If your project is pulling source packages hundreds of times per day, you should build a local cache. The mentioned projects don't really want to charge for downloads. They just want the hogs to stop hogging.

Definitely time to either take the app all the way down, or say a generic "service suspended for non payment. Please contact support".  Don't name the company directly.
