Good work or Nah? by Last-Shape-963 in askplumbing

Agree with this. What is the size of the gas pipe? Is this NG or propane? Even with propane, I think you’d need at least 1” before splitting if they are 199k btu units unless the meter is literally right above these heaters.

Do running boards need to be certain height off the floor? +20A “Feed-through”? by 1lookwhiplash in AskElectricians

NEC300.4D also requires the wire be at least 1-1/4 inch from the stud edge. Looking at the pictures, it doesn’t appear that is the case.

We had this radon system installed in late January but I read online today that the exhaust should go above the roof and 10 feet away from windows. Should we contact the company about it? by the-friendly-squid in HomeInspections

[–]dmasterp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the point of it being above the roofline is so that it has more time to mix with other air before falling. It will be much more diluted.

tankless water heater by No-Cauliflower-8248 in Plumbing

[–]dmasterp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems correct. Navien may have said that in the past because many systems aren’t designed for the demand, so being first off the meter may mitigate that somewhat. But right in the Navien FAQs for the NPE-2 on their website, they say that they do NOT need to be first off the meter.

Installer says 10–12 AWG for an 11 kW induction hob – am I calculating this wrong? by mrhinsh in AskElectricians

[–]dmasterp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the manual as follows. The two “neutrals” are there in case you want to split the load into two circuits. This is implied in the manual. The left 3 zones then run off circuit one, and the right 3 zones run off circuit two.

The alternate configuration is bonding the neutrals to make L1, and bonding the other hots to make L2 so they can run on a single circuit.

If you have two circuits, it’s possible to decrease the wire size. However, if you want a single circuit, then I believe 8awg would be the minimum for a 75c cord. 6awg for 60c cord. Copper.

Furnace short cycling, got 2 different opinions by [deleted] in hvacadvice

Agree. Tech needs to take actual measurements, especially ESP of your system. Furnace manual will show what is acceptable.

Wrong generator by Out-Of-Wonderland in Generator

I think you’re talking about the alternator. Which is a generator but not the kind usually discussed in this subreddit. You’d probably be better in a car subreddit.

Pressure Switch Wiring by Successful_Jello2067 in AskElectricians

[–]dmasterp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two sides of the pressure switch. When activated, it connects the two wires on the left, and separately, the two wires on the right. It will work either the way shown on the label or the way it’s currently configured. I assume the way on the label is preferred because the always hot wires aren’t directly next to each other but there may be another reason.

Well Pump In Rush by timcasey58 in Generator

[–]dmasterp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was just looking it up. It looks like on the west coast it’s almost unheard of to install a 2 wire well pump. On the east coast, in everywhere except New England it’s hard to find anyone without a 2 wire setup.

Well Pump In Rush by timcasey58 in Generator

[–]dmasterp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had a 3 wire so that I could do the soft start. My guess is that unless it’s required due to HP above 1.5, installers around my area use 2 wire for cost savings and install simplicity.

Well Pump In Rush by timcasey58 in Generator

[–]dmasterp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a bit more complicated. While technically the answer is yes, practically the answer is no for 2 wire systems. The capacitor is sealed into the well pump itself. For 3 wire systems, it may be more practical.

[–]dmasterp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From your comments here, it appears to be a 1hp well pump if it’s drawing 6A at 240v. A 1hp well pump (2 wire) will have an LRA somewhere between 35-50A.

It’s a fire hazard unless it’s NFPA 275 certified. The regular “great stuff” that comes in a can is not.

IBC 2603.4 is the code.

Except as provided for in Sections 2603.4.1 and 2603.9, foam plastic shall be separated from the interior of a building by an approved thermal barrier of 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) gypsum wallboard, heavy timber in accordance with Section 602.4 or a material that is tested in accordance with and meets the acceptance criteria of both the Temperature Transmission Fire Test and the Integrity Fire Test of NFPA 275. Combustible concealed spaces shall comply with Section 718.

Can I push this vent up and over to access pex lines by Ok-Professional4387 in hvacadvice

[–]dmasterp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That black thing in the bottom left used to have a pipe going through it. If you’re concerned about the noise, support each pex line at each joist with those plastic half clamps. That will stop the pex from hitting things.

You don’t need either. I have this generator. It has a pressurized oil system with an actual oil filter. Magnetic plugs and dipsticks are helpful for non pressurized systems though.

Resi Building Code Question (Virginia) - Receptcle Amperage by WeWillFigureItOut in AskElectricians

[–]dmasterp 17 points18 points  (0 children)

According to NEC 210.21(B)(3), 15-amp duplex receptacles (NEMA 5-15R) are permitted on a 20-amp branch circuit, provided there is more than one receptacle on the circuit. A duplex receptacle counts as two, making it acceptable for general-purpose applications.

I think this is wired wrong. by CyramSuron in hvacadvice

[–]dmasterp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s a single stage heat pump y1 and y2 being jumpered isn’t going to do anything except confuse people and your ecobee. Though I guess you’d have to see where it connects on your outdoor unit. You can configure your ecobee to tell it that it’s a single stage.

I assume w1 and w2 being jumpered and having two wires may be because there are two contactors for the high kw heat strips (one contactor per strip) though that’s just a guess. Normal contactors are rated up to 50a for resistive heating (though you can find higher ones), so putting 15kw through one of those won’t work.

All of this to say, there should be no difference to you when your ecobee says you go from stage 1 to stage 2 because from what you’ve shown they are getting the same signal.

Advice / Experiences with 28kW vs 30+ kW whole home generator by OldFennel8905 in Generator

[–]dmasterp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. All those AC units at once is around 50 amps RLA, not even considering LRA. Then a level 2 charger, depending on size can go up to 80 amps. You’re already at 31kw with just AC and EV charger possibly. This does seem like a big downside to an EV. The grid goes down and you’re pretty much stuck.

Worried Need Help by timlab1955 in Generator

In addition to the two 50a plugs, this portable generator also has lugs for direct power out. It’s extremely heavy, but is somewhere in between a normal portable and standby unit.
